Greetings From Your Editor...

Spring is bustin' out all over...

Yes, Spring has sprung and for many of you that may just mean on the calender. I'm in San Diego, CA so I do consider myself spoiled for the weather, foilage and fauna. I even found myself performing some songs outdoors on Thursday about flowers, worms and dirt backed by some bluesy-boogie piano young children at the beautiful "Carlsbad Flower Fields!" Had to throw in "Got My Mojo Working" and the "Funky ABC's" for good measure. My little "flowers" loved it!

Passover and Easter are coming right up to celebrate the season. In California, chanteuse Lawrence Lebo will "wow" at  infamous MaCabe's and Earl Thomas presents a unique and jam-packed concert in support of the Blues Foundation. More festivals are also kicking in as the weather starts to lighten up, too. Johnny "Winter" might get a new nickname this this weekend 'cause he's sure to heat up Centenary College in New Jersey. Some of us will be basking in San Felipe Baja Mexico for their 7th annual Blues & Arts Fiesta in this little shrimp fishing village on the Sea of Cortez. On Sunday, fun is going down from Texas to Florida. The 24th Byron Bay Bluesfest kicks off next Thursday... I tell ya there's no excuse for not being able to catching your blues fix ... it's going on all around the globe!

Time to spring into action!

Your ever-grateful editor... Michele Lundeen

From Blues Festival Guide publisher, Kaati:

Attention Blues Festival Promoters: RAISE THE ROOF

Here is a unique opportunity for you to get yourself and your festival attendees involved with the exciting Blues Foundation's RAISE THE ROOF: Campaign for the Blues Hall of Fame

The Blues Hall of Fame pays tribute to the greatest of the genre and educates new people about the genre. The Blues Foundation has been inducting people into the Blues Hall of Fame for years; it was a simple evening with web presence. Nothing permanent. But now we need physical presence.

We are working with the Blues Foundation and a myriad of artists and organizations to spread the word about this noble cause. Because we are right in the middle of preparing for festival season, this is the perfect time for you to get involved as well and it requires just a small amount of effort.

Here is a link with more details about the Blues Hall of Fame campaign. Our goal is to help raise awareness (this is where you come in) in order to raise funds to reach the goal of 3.5 million. We know you are busy with your event but here are some easy, quick and free ways you can get the word out about this worthwhile campaign.

What you can do: Add Blues Hall of Fame logo to your website

- Add BHF banner ad to your website - Include BHF ad in your Program

- MC announcements from stage - Pass out brochure to your attendees

Please make a commitment to this cause and let’s use the momentum of the festival season to create awareness! How does someone donate? Donate online. Call me if you want to share ideas or to get an ad for your website or program.

Fabulous Thunderbirds :: ON THE VERGE

The Fabulous Thunderbirds are On the Verge of an exciting new era as they release their breakout recording for Severn Records. Anchored by the big voice of original front man, Kim Wilson, On the Verge is a departure for the legendary blues rockers as they explore their soulful side with ten original numbers recorded at Severn Sound Studios. On the Verge marks a new beginning for the band with Wilson saying, we're defining our own genre.

Using cutting edge technology and a collaborative, free-flowing creative process, the T-Birds have crafted a fresh sound, one that's sure to satisfy diehard fans while bringing new blood into the fold of the band's faithful legion. These originals tracks take cues from unexpected influences like O.V. Wright ("Too Much Water") and Junior Parker ("That's the Way We Roll"). The T- Birds kick things off with their single, "I Want to Believe," a driving number with a Lenny Kravitz-meets-Staple Singers vibe; "Lovin Time" has a Los Lonely Boys feel; "Hold Me," melds classic rock with soul and reggae; "Got To Bring It With You" is a soulful rocker; "Lonely Highway," nods to the blues of the Stax tradition.

Backing Wilson are veteran T-Birds guitarists Johnny Moeller and Mike Keller, plus bassist Randy Bermudes and Jason Moeller on drums. Co-producer/-songwriter Kevin Anker guests on keyboards. In a career spanning over three decades, the Fabulous Thunderbirds are On the Verge with their most mature recording to date.

Andy Poxon :: TOMORROW

Tomorrow, young phenom's guitarist, singer, songwriter Andy Poxon's stellar release on EllerSoul Records, is produced by Duke Robillard. All the songs except one on the 14 track album were written by Poxon and reflect his passion for the Americana music roots of blues, rockabilly, early rhythm and blues, country and more. Poxon also wrote all the arrangements for the group of musicians that appear on the disc which include the Roomful of Blues Horns, Bruce Bear and Robillard among others.

EllerSoul co-owner Ronnie Owens discovered Poxon two years ago at the Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival after getting a tip from blues harp master Mark Wenner of the Nighthawks. Impressed, Owens signed Poxon to a recording deal. Robillard discovered Poxon not long after and was taken with this old soul.

Duke exclaims, "Andy Poxon is a complete and mature musician at the ripe old age of 18 years old. To say Andy has a bright future is an understatement. This album represents a young roots musician already developed past his years, and ready to lead us all into the future of pure American blues and roots music."

SIMI VALLEY CAJUN & BLUES MUSIC FESTIVAL

Simi Valley Cajun & Blues Music Festival

PERFORMERS SPOTLIGHT:

A TRIBUTE TO FINIS TASBY WITH ELVIN BISHOP

Featuring JOHN NÉMETH and KID ANDERSEN

Remembered by many these days as a founding member of the groundbreaking Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Elvin Bishop has also tasted pop success with his 1976 smash hit "Fooled Around and Fell In Love." Bishop's long and varied career has included other musical stops along the way as well, from deep down gutbucket blues played in smoky South Side Chicago taverns, to raucous roadhouse R&B, to rollicking good time rock & roll. And at every stage along the way, he's imbued all of his music with deep passion, a uniquely creative spirit, and more than a little bit of sly humor. Joining the legendary Elvin Bishop will be rising blues star John Németh (below rt) and Norwegian blues guitarist Kid Andersen (below lt).

The 24th Annual Simi Valley Cajun & Blues Music Festival will be held on Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, May 25th & 26th, 2013. 2013 promises to continue our tradition of bringing fans a full weekend of nonstop award-winning entertainment, more food choices than you can sample in two days, and activities to keep kids of all ages entertained too.

The Cajun & Zydeco Stage will showcase continuous music each day featuring the best Cajun, Creole and Zydeco music acts.

The Blues Stage will feature some of the most talented and renowned Blues & Roots acts in the world both Saturday and Sunday.

Both stages feature lots of viewing space plus large dance floors. In addition, this family friendly event has a giant kids area featuring bouncers, rock walls, specialty acts, crafts and talent shows. There are also food booths and many crafts and merchandise booths.

THE MISSION OF THE EMMETT TILL MUSEUM

 "The genesis of the movement"

~ The murder of young Emmett Till in Money, Mississippi on August 28, 1955 is noted as one of the leading events in the early civil rights movement.

~ The epicenter of the murder case, Bryant's Grocery (pictured at left as it looked in 2009), is in jeopardy of disintegrating and fading away. Years of neglect have taken their toll on this important landmark.

~ Bryant's Grocery is listed as one of Mississippi’s most endangered historic buildings.

~ This building, (pictured at right as it looked in 1955), MUST be restored as a symbol for civil rights and human rights.

~ Our plan is to fund the restoration process and use the building as a museum for Emmett Till and the civil rights movement that followed his tragic death.

How can you help?

JIMI HENDRIX & JOE LOUIS WALKER

Jimi Hendrix is back. With a brand new posthumous album of never before released recordings. The album is called PEOPLE, HELL AND ANGELS. The songs here are the building blocks for what would have been the next phase of his growth as a musician after leaving the Experience.

Then, in the second hour of the program… Joe Louis Walker was a teenage guitar hero in the San Francisco sixties. After the death of his friend, Michael Bloomfield, he turned his back on the blues to concentrate on his faith, and his education. Then in 1985, he came roaring back. And he has been roaring ever since. Joe's latest record is called HELLFIRE. Elwood will put some of that in a bottle for you.

Treasures from the Jimi Hendrix archives PLUS Joe Louis Walker and HELLFIRE. Next time, in The BluesMobile.
