About Us

Greetings From Your Editor...

May we offer you some blues...

Greetings...

"May" we offer you some blues? Well, of course, it's May and that's what we're here for and we expect you to take all you want and ask for more. Now that's a good puppy.

I feel like the phrase, "where did the month go," is starting to sound like a recording or just plain deja vu... like wow, I think I've been here before, man. But it's twue... time just keeps flying by so remember to reach out for that golden (or blue) ring and make the best of your time. Soaking up some blues sounds like a good way to do that.

This weekend find festivals in Massachusetts, Italy, Michagan, Louisiana, the UK, Georgia, and Pennsylvania. Now that's a roadtrip! Tons of blues fans and national artists will also converge onto Memphis next week for the 34th Annual Blues Music Awards. The award ceremony is May 9, but festivities abound before and after across that part of the Delta. This is an amazing trip to take and one you should try and put on your bucket-list. Sending congratulations from your BFG family to all the amazing nominees.

Reminder: We have some super cool giveaways going on at our Facebook page under our "Get Rewards" link. Check it out and go for it!

Talk to ya next week!

Your ever-grateful editor...

Michele Lundeen

Correction: I do throw a few mistakes in here and there just to see if you're paying attention. Please keep me on my toes... I always wanted to be a ballerina anyway.

2013 Blues Festival Guide 11th Annual Magazine Cover

In case you missed it in last week's issue, here is the glorious 2013 cover of our 11th annual Blues Festival Guide magazine. The art, done by primitive folk artist Lennie Jones, was chosen to honor the great Muddy Waters during this 100th year of his birth. The magazine started hitting the streets this week and will be digital soon.

Check with your local blues society or a festival to pickup your copy or can find order information here.

Knock Kneed Sally :: GIMME SOME BISCUIT

Knock Kneed Sally's third album, Gimme Some Biscuit, has been birthed and released May 3rd. Gimme Some Biscuit will showcase the bands' new song ideas and capture the raw energy that fans say they love about their live shows.

Butt Movin’ Entertainment from Knock Kneed Sally says their new CD Gimme Some Biscuit is "an ode to their love of breakfast." Stovepipe Perkins swears there are no double meanings: “I really wish I was clever enough to do something like that… hahahahaha, they say the same thing about our other song called 'Trash Day.'"

Knock Kneed Sally likes to have fun and play to a very high level while connecting with the audience. Stovepipe generally tells stories about girls breaking into his house, dancers setting themselves on fire and alcoholic neighbors: “Ya know, day-in-the-life stuff," laughs Stovepipe.

Gimme Some Biscuit by Knock Kneed Sally includes all original tunes that reflect people they've known and situations that they've been sometimes drawn into.

Knock Kneed Sally includes the talents of players you may already know from regional and nationally touring bands: Stovepipe Perkins, Jemmie Hill, Jerry Riccardi, Jake Koivisto and a special CD appearance by flautist, Jazzy Jazz.

Download title track “Gimme Some Biscuit,” a time stamp of where KKS is as a band and a chance to create something that will be relevant into the future. Find Knock Kneed Sally’s schedule here. Catch them at a festival or club near you.

The Cash Box Kings :: BLACK TOPPING

Black Toppin,' the second release for The Cash Box Kings' on Blind Pig Records, hits the streets May 12.

Considered the "Young Turks" of the Chicago blues scene, The Cash Box Kings are dedicated to carrying on the spirit of the 1940’s and 50’s post-war Chicago blues sound as well as the Delta blues music of the 20’s and 30’s but with a bravado, energy and freshness to the mix that results in a distinctive musical experience.

"How refreshing it is to hear some honest blues. The Cash Box Kings play with taste and feel and it was faith-restoring to know there are guys out there that still know and appreciate real blues." – Charlie Musselwhite

The Kings’ Blind Pig label debut, 2011’s Holler And Stomp, garnered critical acclaim as well as Blues Blast Award nominations for Band of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Traditional Blues CD.

On Black Toppin,' the Kings remain dedicated to carrying on the musical traditions of post-war 1950’s Chicago blues, plus stretch out and cover some of the other musical landscapes that blues music has traversed over the last 70 years. Their deep affinity for Delta and Louisiana swamp blues, jump blues and their own signature "blues-a-billy" is mixed with some of the musical styles of groups that were influenced by the blues like Velvet Underground and include a pair of originals redolent of the 70's era Rolling Stones.

Welcome Blues Super Group… New York Blues Project

The NEW YORK BLUES PROJECT aka NYBP is: Jon Montgomery, Clint Bahr, Billy Ficca, Fingers DelRey, Steve Bondy and Jeff 'Houndog' Schiller. NYBP... six New York City legends... each having an industry track record that is nonpareil. Members of  NYBP have collaborated with: Johnny Winter; The Doors; Peter Banks; Flash; Kiss; Foreigner; Bootsy Collins; Bill Laswell; and Todd Rundgren. A comprehensive listing of the many luminaries with which members of NYBP have worked would exceed the press release's permissible wordcount. The website at www.NYBLUESPROJECT.com contains a comprehensive listing of their many credits.

NYBP's sound is as unique as are the talents of the members of the group. The sound is classified best as Metropolitan Blues or Urban-City-Scape Blues. Its roots include: jazz; jump; swing and the multitude of categories that have come to define the contemporary blues genre.

NYBP has stunned audiences wherever they have played. Whether performing at the Montreal Blues Festival, aka Festiblues, or benefits to raise monies for the less fortunate amongst us, or legendary venues in New York City, audiences agree that they are a “blues super group.” But, Mud Williams, who is the son of the legendary Muddy Waters, put it best when he said, "The New York Blues Project... a great band... that's why I love the blues."

Since the initial penning of this press release, the legendary Uptown Horns (Phunque.com) has chosen to join forces with the New York Blues Project. Their musicianship can only enhance the super-group status of the New York Blues Project.

Lords and Ladies of the Blues world, please join with BUSTLE TRUNK MGMT in welcoming the New York Blues Project, featuring the Uptown Horns, to the wonderful world of the Blues.
