Greetings from your Editor...

Just keep truckin'...

I just returned from visiting my 91 year old lil' spitfire mama who has recovered nicely from a recent, mild (yet scary) heart attack. She and my "dad" just celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary. I was so glad to be able to slip away as it's been a whole year. Where does the time go one wonders? While there I got the sad news that Bobby "Blue" Band passed at 83 years. Cherish, yes, seize the moments. We never know what tomorrow brings.

July 1st is Canada Day and July 4th is the USA's Independence Day. Tons of blues type fests are going on this weekend through the 4th all the way from Finland to the UK to Austria to Italy as well as all across the USA and Eastern Canada! Wow!

Blues birthdays of note: July 1st: Willie Dixon (at right 1915), James Cotton (1935), Dan Aykroyd (1952); Mississippi John Hurt (July 2, 1893); Champion Jack Dupree (July 4, 1910)

Talk to ya next week!

Your ever-grateful editor,

Michele Lundeen

Correction: Skip James was born June 9, 1902, not June 21st as a noted site had reported. Our apologies.

Mike Zito :: GONE TO TEXAS

Gone to Texas is the solo label debut CD from singer/guitarist Mike Zito. Also along for the ride are special guests Delbert McClinton on vocals and harmonica, Sonny Landreth on guitar, Susan Cowsill on vocals and Lewis Stephens (Delbert McClinton, Freddie King) on keyboards. Zito expertly matches them with his core band, The Wheel: Jimmy Carpenter – sax and guitars; Rob Lee – drums; and Scot Sutherland – bass. The result effectively announces one of the most exciting and highly-anticipated new releases of the year.

Recorded at Dockside Studios in Maurice, Louisiana, Gone to Texas was produced by the Beaumont, Texas-based Zito and engineered by long-time New Orleans notable David Ferrell, giving the album’s mix a decided Crescent City bent, while embracing Mike’s Texas blues and roots influences. The lead-off title track is an autobiographical tale of redemption and catharsis for Zito, who literally lived the tale, with a bit of an Allman Brothers musical twinge. “Rainbow Bridge,” aided and abetted by some killer Sonny Landreth guitar work and soulful Susan Cowsill vocals, sounds like a long-lost Little Feat song. On “The Road Never Ends,” Zito cranks things into the stratosphere with a sonic blast of electric slide guitar and blistering vocals, accompanied on vocals and harmonica by McClinton. “Subtraction Blues” deals with a man whose dealings with his woman “just don’t add up,” spiced with a funky Second Line feel. “Take It Easy, “one of the two non-originals on the CD, is Zito’s soothing take on the McClinton-penned ballad. The other cover is Mike’s unique version of Beaumont’s own Blind Willie Johnson’s “Let Your Love Shine on Me,” which closes the album.

Make no mistake about it, Gone to Texas IS a very special – and personal – album for Mike Zito.

Farewell to Bobby "Blue" Bland

Bobby "Blue" Bland, one of the great voices of our time, passed away June 23, 2013 at the age of 83.

A stalwart of blues, soul and rhythm & blues, in the 50s and 60s Bland was "one of the main creators of the modern soul-blues sound." What an inspiration he has been to so many. Below is a portion of a fitting tribute from lifelong fan Rev. Billy C. Wirtz:

Further On Up the Road

A Farewell to Bobby “Blue” Bland

He never became a household name like his best friend and former band mate B.B. King did. Ask folks on the street and one in fifty might know the name, but one of America’s greatest singers and Blues artists passed away last night at the age of 83.

Bobby “Blue” Bland was born Robert Calvin Bland in January 16, 1930, in the crossroads town of Rosemark, TN. His musical career began like most Black singers of that era, in the church. Till the end of his days he would still love the hard driving, impassioned screams of Archie Brownlee and The Original Five Blind Boys Of Mississippi and the transcendent, other-worldly harmonies of the old school quartets like The Highway Q.C.’s, The Caravans and The Soul Stirrers (the group that gave us Sam Cooke and Johnny Taylor). His own career began with The Beale Streeters (a group that included Johnny Ace, Roscoe Gordon and B.B. King) in 1952 with "I.O.U. Blues."

Back in the early fifties when he first recorded, Blues was still characterized by a coolness and detachment on the part of the singer. Bland brought the fire of the pulpit to the stages of the Apollo, The Howard and a thousand forgotten juke joints along the Chitlin Circuit. He would go on to record a string of number one hits through the fifties, sixties, seventies and even into the eighties.
