TABLE  OF  CONTENTS
Greetings from your Editor...
Sinners on revival day...
"The blues
...the sound of a sinner on revival day." W.C. Handy

Nov 16 is W.C. Handy's birthday. Handy is widely considered the "Father of The Blues" because of his role in helping popularize the blues. Handy's composition, "Memphis Blues," published in 1912, became a trailblazer in bringing that song structure to large audiences.

Nov 15 is "Clean Your Refrigerator Day" AND "National Philanthropy Day"... maybe put some of that extra stuff in your frig to good use by giving it to someone in need.

"I'm broke and disgusted please lend me a helping hand. I'm cold and hungry, swear that's more than I can stand." (Josh White)

"I have Uneda biscuits here and a half a pint of gin. The gin is mighty fine but them biscuits are a little too thin." (Blind Lemon Jefferson)

Maybe we can all try and lend a helping hand where we can as the holidays approach. Could be in the form of a biscuit or even a song.

Blues Birthdays of Note this week: Nov 14 Carey Bell (1936), Anson Funderburgh (1954); Nov 15 Little Willie John (1937), Nov 16 W.C. Handy (1873), Hubert Sumlin (1931), Francis Clay (1923); Nov 17 Tab Benoit (1967), Nov 21 Dr. John (1940); Nov 22 Angela Strehli (1945).

Talk to ya next week! Your ever-grateful editor,

CD & DVD Releases
Cyril Neville :: MAGIC HONEY
Magic Honey is the first solo outing for Ruf Records from Grammy-winning singer/percussionist Cyril Neville. On the new CD, Cyril steps outside his Royal Southern Brotherhood membership to create a dazzling roots musical gumbo that stirs the pot with many flavors.

Produced by David Z (Prince, Etta James, Buddy Guy) and recorded at Studio in the Country in Bogalusa, Louisiana, Magic Honey delivers an amazing amalgam of sounds, all tethered to Cyril’s most-soulful of vocals, and backed by an all-star band that includes Cranston Clements – guitar; “Mean” Willie Green – drums; Carl Dufrene – bass; and Norman Caesar – keyboards. Read more about Cyril and MAGIC HONEY here

Billy Thompson :: FRIEND
Billy Thompson’s highly anticipated new release, Friend, was conceptualized and recorded with the intention of delivering an ensemble in a live room setting. This was accomplished by laying the basic tracks down in an old grist mill, delivering an open, old-school tone.

Billy Thompson has been delivering virtuosic guitar work that has electrified audiences in the U.S. and throughout Europe, setting the tone for this veteran musician’s sizzling performances, both live and in studio. In his original music, he combines world class slide guitar, searing licks and soulful vocals with a unique amalgamation of styles including blues, rock, funk, New Orleans and R&B. Are We Losing The Blues? Read/Watch This special report
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) - The Blues: it's where rock got its roll, Soul got its soul and naturally the "B" in R & B stands for The Blues.

It's been said that The Blues was born in the fields of the Mississippi River Delta and came to Memphis to grow up. But where are The Blues now? What happened to juke joints and small record labels that gave us B.B. King, R.I. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough and countless others? FOX13 News went in search of an answer and found out, the Blues may not be dead after all. But it has definitely become something different.

If there was no Blues music there would be no Beatles. No Elvis. No Isaac Hayes. Almost every single form of popular American music from hip-hop to country can trace its roots and influence back to The Blues and eventually, right back to Memphis. Read more and watch video here

Mississippi Blues Trail markers tell stories through words and images of bluesmen and women and how the places where they lived and the times in which they existed–and continue to exist–influenced their music. The sites run the gamut from city streets to cotton fields, train depots to cemeteries, and clubs to churches.
