This, by the way, is Irvegg, the artist of our sign board.  He is SO clever and has SUCH a gift with chalk.  What a gift he brings with his art, quietly applied each time it comes to make a new sign.  Thank you Irvegg!

Best of 2013!
I never quite know WHAT I'm going to find in my e-mail.  Earlier this week I found a note from a friend saying The Fresh Honey Cookbook was selected as a top cookbook for 2013 by The Washington Post!  This is the kind of thing that is a huge boost for me.  I'm not soliciting these comments but am the happy recipient of the news.

PLUS, my family thinks it's pretty great!

My favorite new salad
Okay - truth here.  Farro is NOT new, but is actually an ancient grain that was rescued from near extinction in Tuscany.  It has a delightfully satifsying nuttiness that, when paired with winter fruits and squash is a most satisfying side dish.  Serve it warm or eat it chilled.  You pick.  Nothing wrong with either choice.

This is Rebecca, the maker of the Farro these days.  Oh so good.  Oh so good.

We are # 1 in your eyes!
Mountain Xpress readers consistently vote us best caterer.  We're in the Hall of Fame, a designation for folks who are # 1 time after time.  We think that's pretty cool.

That's all.

Winter reorganization
I'm not so much of a Spring cleaner, more like a fall and winter gal.

This red shelf thing was here at work for quite a while.  I bought it when we were still at 60 Biltmore Avenue.  It moved to 67 with us and then, when it no longer fit here, migrated to my home where it found a spot in my converted garage, otherwise known as "bee world."  The unit became the repository of my bike gear (helmet, shoes, spare times, lube, tools) and my glass equipment (bars of color, "frit" - more color medium, my tools, and various other accessories for the glass hobbist I am.)

I bought a new stove this summer after the one that came with my house kicked the bucket.  I had put a table right next to it that accommodated my water jug, and some of my kitchen tools.  But that table did not accommodate everything AND this little red job was wasting away in bee world.

SO - voila!  I moved it all around!  Red job is now in the kitchen.  Wooden table is now in the living room.  Table that WAS in the living room is at my sister's house.  And I have a new shelf unit to put together to go in bee world which will neatly house bike gear and glass gear.

Ha!

A word or two from Laurey
December 18, 2013

Howdy do y’all.

Here it is a spectacularly lovely afternoon in Asheville. The sun is out, warm and full. Though the morning was frosty, and I came in to my office and immediately turned on my little space heater, it is now quite cozy and warm here in my corner and the heater is off.

Life is fine right now. Slow enough and also full enough to keep me going and engaged and filled with enough time to do everything. What this has meant for me is making Christmas cards, hand painting them, addressing them, stamping them and sending them out. Wrapping presents, packing and sending them out, navigating the lines at the post office.

I have to say, it has all been very fun. I like to collect these kinds of experiences. Christmas Eve shopping at Bloomingdale’s one year was an utter riot. All of us were just grabbing things and laughing at our stupidity at having waited so long. I think I bought a fisherman’s knit sweater for someone that year.

One year I went to Jones Beach on the Fourth of July. That is idiocy. The crowds were so thick that it was impossible to even get to the water without stepping on everyone’s blankets. Still, we all laughed at the silliness of stuffing ourselves into the subway, taking the long ride from Manhattan out to the beach to squeeze into not enough space. Once.

I’ve navigated the Village in New York City on Halloween. THAT was a trip. For some reason I got corralled into a group who were all dressed as brides and grooms – we were a Moonie wedding. I, along with all the other women, was a groom, festooned in a tuxedo. The brides were all men and cavorted in dazzling beaded numbers. We caused quite the scene. And we could barely move, packed in so tight in the mass of revelers. Once. It was enough. I’m glad I did it. But just once.

Today, sitting here at my desk in my quiet and warm office, reflecting on those once times, I am happy to be living the quieter time. I realized the other day that things are just right for me right now. I have friends and family and a meaningful place to be every day. I have a cozy home with a loving dog who adores me. I have bees, who guide me and a new book to share and other thoughts and ideas. I found out today that I am going to perform an evening of stories at the Asheville Community Theatre in the spring. That should be fun. And I have a bunch of places to visit to share my sweet honey tales. Those visits will be fun too.

Oh, yes, I am still in treatment (3 more to go as I write this note) and then I have some more things to take care of in the New Year. Scheduling is still happening but I am very hopeful that all will be finished and I’ll be good to go once again. I got a LOT to DO! Okay? Okay!!!

I’ll collect some stories for you from Christmas. Hope you get everything you wish for and that these things carry you forward as you wish. Blessings to you for a lovely holiday and the most perfect 2014.

LiveSTRONG
I am going to be a LiveSTRONG leader again this year.  I'll be the one to contact if anyone in our area needs help connecting to cancer support services, either locally or beyond.  I must say I am quite honored to be in this organization.  They care about me in a very personal way, sending me notes of good thoughts and support.  They know when I am getting treatments and they know when I am fading and their calls and notes lift me.

Locally I am proud to say that we are starting to work on the 2nd Annual JOYride for Livestrong at the YMCA.  The ride this year will be on Saturday, May 17, which, by a handy coincidence, IS Livestrong Day.  The fundraising we did last year helped make it possible for the program to MORE THAN DOUBLE in size.  This year the funds will go to training the new staff that are needed to run things.  All very good.  Very very good.

I go to Austin in April to get filled with the new plan.  But basically it's all about helping people live.  And live well.

I'll tell you more about all of this as time passes.  Thank you for caring about me and for caring about LiveSTRONG.
