The View from Here. . .
January 2014

It's All a Game of “Make Believe”!

We do not see things the way they are.
We see things the way WE are. ~ Unknown

The New Year is off and running, and it is likely that 2014 will be an extension of what we experienced in 2013: Change, change, change. (I heard those moans!) Like it or not, we’re all smack in the middle of a big transformational cycle, and 2011 through 2015 are pivotal years for humanity and the world. You can see evidence of CHANGES in every direction, and you can choose to judge them as “good” or “bad.” National scandals, random acts of violence, bizarre behavior, and the blatant wholesale selling-out of the People by elected officials (oops, did I say that out loud??) all seem to be on the increase. At the same time, people are quietly getting clear about what they want and coming together to do something, while amazing new technology is affecting all areas of life.

We're halfway through the Uranus/Pluto square, and many are looking around in alarm (especially if they are paying attention to mainstream media!). People are starting to panic as the “old paradigm” crumbles, and we can’t quite see what the “new paradigm” is. But that is exactly what is supposed to happen: the old, rigid frameworks, structures, and institutions must break down or break through to something that serves everyone, rather than just the few. The “serving the few” paradigm can no longer be sustained. And our beliefs and thoughts and habits that undermine us, rather than support us—or serve only us—must go as well. In addition to world-wide earthquakes and storms, most of us are experiencing internal storms, as well, as our internal shorelines are relentlessly reshaped.

So what do we do to navigate this transition into the New and keep our sanity? My advice is to pull your head out of “the old,” and look around with clear eyes at what’s there in front of you. Being authentic, forgiving people and moving on, and following your heart will all help.

As the sand under our feet shifts, it’s also a good idea to really look at what you believe. Most of what we believe to be "truth" and “knowledge” was taught to us by someone else, quite a long time ago, and we haven’t questioned it since (because, well, everyone knows it's true, right?!). We have to have beliefs about the world in order to operate in the world. But we have to realize that not everything we were taught is true. Yes, the phrase "Question Authority" is frequently coming to mind these days!

It behooves us to start to realize what ideas, knowledge, and beliefs we are clinging to, and figure out if they are true. First, we have to become aware of the beliefs we hold, deep down inside. And some of them are really buried. Once we identify what we believe, and then realize that some of those beliefs are no longer valid (or never were), we can release our assumptions and expectations, and figure out what is true now. We can truly free ourselves.

It's like we're going from an old land line phone with a dial to a smartphone: The whole landscape and environment of "what a phone is" has drastically changed, and you will have to read the new manual or your head will explode! (Not to mention that you won't get it to work!) Of course, it also helps if there's a teenager around, because they just "know" how these things work! In fact, teenagers will not only show you what you believe, they'll show you how erroneous it is, and then poke a stick in it, just for good measure!! (They are our teachers, rather than the other way around!)

It is scientifically proven that our beliefs, thoughts, judgments, and expectations create our reality, and not vice versa. “I’ll believe it when I see it” is backwards. We really only “see it” when we believe it. So if you are seeing it or experiencing it in your life, somewhere deep down, you believe it! When everyone shares the same strong beliefs about how the external world works—which has pretty much been the case for most of our lives—the external world (our mutually created reality) is fairly predictable, even if it might not really be supporting us very well. Since most people bought into those beliefs, it’s easy to also believe that “that’s just the way life is” (or "the way I am") and “there’s nothing I can do about it.” But those beliefs may not be true!

The difficulty and the danger come when we believe that our beliefs are not just “beliefs,” but Truth. We stop realizing that we are operating out of belief, rather than fact. We think these thoughts are Truth and we never question them. We forget that beliefs are ideas taken on faith, usually because they were taught by an authority figure, or perhaps we agreed on them with our peers, or we underwent a traumatic event that created a deep belief, and our experience over time seemed to reinforce them. We literally create our reality from our beliefs, and we can’t change our reality unless we identify and change our beliefs, or at least open the door—and our minds—to new beliefs.

For example, if you were taught to believe that “Life is hard,” or “You have to work hard to earn money;” that “You aren't smart enough, so you can’t do those things;” or even that certain types of people are “less than” others or are dangerous, that is what you will experience in the world. These beliefs become the stories we tell about ourselves and our world. If you don’t expect anything else—or are not open to it—you simply will not see it. Our minds are programmed to notice and focus only on things that reinforce that we are right, that our understanding is correct. It has to do that, so we can feel competent and capable of living in the world. The stronger the belief, the harder it will be for us to see anything to the contrary. It simply will not exist in our world, because our beliefs filter our experience, and our experience reinforces our beliefs, creating deeper and deeper neural "grooves."

In fact, evidence that is contrary to our beliefs produces cognitive dissonance and great feelings of discomfort, so we dismiss it, ridicule it, get angry, and leave people and situations that create that dissonance. Look at your own reaction to new information, and you will see that this is true. We even select our companions based on mutual beliefs and world-view, and the more we reinforce a set of beliefs, the stronger those beliefs and morphic fields become, and the harder it is to see anything to the contrary.

Whether you think you can, or think you can't,
you're right! ~ Henry Ford

It's time to do a spring cleaning of our beliefs and thoughts about ourselves and the world around us. Our beliefs can support us in soaring to our full potential, but more often they keep us locked in a small prison of our own devising. We tend to believe the worst about and for ourselves. Our beliefs limit us more than anything else. But beliefs can be changed, if we can only recognize them for what they are.

We have a huge opportunity now. As the energies—as the very vibrations and currents of the world—have changed, those shared beliefs are no longer as strong. Therefore, the external word is no longer as stable and predictable as it once was, and “the way life is” is changing. And it’s changing faster and faster. So our beliefs, understandings, assumptions, and expectations need to change as well. And as we change our beliefs, our reality and lives can (and must) change. And it is our choice whether it changes for the better or not. A lot depends on how much we are clinging to the “old.”

The only limits we have are those we believe in! What are the beliefs and thoughts—the “knowledge”—that YOU use to limit and stop yourself? What are your beliefs, thoughts, and judgments about yourself, your competence, your strengths and weaknesses, your abilities, how the world operates, money, and what is possible for you?  Do you ever hear yourself say, “I can’t, because….” Or “That won’t work, because…”? The end of that sentence may be a fact, or more likely it is just a limiting belief you’re holding. And each time you express it as a fact, you strengthen its hold on you! We limit ourselves—and often actually torture ourselves—in so many ways because of our beliefs, and we don’t even realize that’s what we’re doing!

Your reality will show you what you believe. If you are miserable where you are—and you feel stuck in it and unable to shift—I guarantee your misery and your “stuckness” are caused by out-of-date, no-longer-viable beliefs. Unplug from those limiting morphic fields. Focus on the examples we have of rising above the “norm,” rather than the examples of failure. When you hear yourself asserting something as fact, PAUSE, and ask yourself where/when you learned that, and if it is really true, or just a belief that can be changed.

Consciously making a small change in a belief system can open many doors of possibility and new options. Feel the difference between “All politicians are liars and cheats,” and “Some politicians are liars and cheats.” What about the difference between “It's hard to find a new job,” and “If I keep looking, maybe I can get a new job,” and “I know there's a great job out there for me, and I know I'll find it."

It’s time to take off the brakes and let ourselves not only run full-steam ahead, but actually fly! The past is gone. There is now less density, and there is more flexibility and more opportunity for us. We cannot sail off to wonderful new adventures if we are still clinging to the dock of old beliefs and self-definitions. We have to let go of self-defeating beliefs, so we can try new things and discover what this new world is all about. (Yeah, suddenly the world isn't flat anymore!!) The doors of the prison have been blown off, but our old, outdated beliefs about ourselves and the world will keep us chained in the same old cell that we dislike so much.

Next time you notice yourself stopping yourself (and you will!), press the Pause button, and look for the belief about yourself, or about how the world operates, that you are still believing. Instead of Truth or Dare, play Truth or Belief? And question what you believe is true. You may be surprised to find out! Then change the belief (or at least suspend it), and let yourself go forward.

No, it is by no means easy! It's like breaking a long-term habit, and your subconscious (and possibly your friends) will try to convince you you're wrong, and you should "change back." And they may give you compelling reasons! You may have to take different actions, and you may have to do it many times before it will "take." It took a lot of repetition to solidify the neural “groove” of that belief; so, creating a new belief will take time and repetition, too.

What would you believe about yourself and your world if you hadn't been taught otherwise? What possibilities and options would you like to have? Work from there and see what happens! Play with it. Remember to “Make Believe”! Play "What if?" Make believe that you can have what you want, instead of telling yourself all the reasons you can’t. Those "reasons" are just beliefs that can be changed. Make believe that you are more powerful than you ever imagined. Make believe that you can really have what will bring you joy. Make believe it is here. And make it BIG and WONDERFUL!

Repeat THAT until it moves from idea, to knowledge, to Truth! And BELIEVE you can!!

If you don't change your beliefs,
your life will be like this forever.
Is that good news?
~ William Somerset Maugham

Maryland IANDS. Check it out!
Happy Chinese New Year! It's the Year of the Wood Horse!
Chinese New Year is January 31. I don’t know much about Chinese astrology, but here are some quotes from Karen Abler Carrasco of Global Light Minds, to give you a taste of what appears to be a truly exuberant year ahead:

There might not be a bigger shift of energies in the entire 60 year wheel of Chinese astrology than this one coming up—the shift from two Water years of deep introspection to the fast-paced spurt of extroverted forward propulsion that the Wood Horse brings. Hold on to your hats, folks, and realize that you won’t be able to, nor will you want to, slow your horses in the New Year ahead!

She says, “Full of uplift, optimism and compelling inspiration, we will be guided into purposeful action of the most elegantly simple and powerfully fruitful kind.

I love how the astrological systems reinforce each other: As we start to dig in to the second half of the Uranus/ Pluto square, we are starting to feel the impetus to take the internal shifts, the deep urge for freedom, and our dreaming of a better life from the last few years and apply them to the external world. So the Year of the Wood Horse is exactly what we’re ready for and what we need.

It’s time to take our new act out on the road! So get out there at the gallop, and feel the joy and freedom of the wind in your mane!
Planetary Influences
Auspicious planetary influences! We’ll have a “black moon” on January 30. A "blue moon" is a second full moon in one month; a "black moon" is the second new moon in a month. New moons are great for setting and energizing intentions, and we have two this month! Whoopie!

The first new moon ushered in the New Year; the second new moon ushers in the Chinese New Year. And both of them are Super Moons, when the moon is at its closest point to the earth in its elliptical journey and, therefore, exerts its greatest influence on earth and its inhabitants. Black moons are unusual, although we’ll have another one in March. Whenever any planetary alignment is unusual, it’s sure to have an impact!

Mars continues in Libra, not for its usual six-week stay in a sign, but for eight months, until mid-July! (Gulp!) In Libra, it will be energizing the Uranus/Pluto square, as well. Mars (independent action) isn’t really happy in Libra (harmony/balance), but Libra will have a long time to teach Mars that we must take other peoples’ views and feelings into account when we take action, and that collaboration creates a better result. (yes, for everyone!)

Venus has been retrograde since the Winter Solstice, offering us the opportunity to really review everything about “value” in our lives: who/what we value and how much, how we value ourselves, financial matters, relationships, and when is the cost worth the price?? She will go direct on January 31, as the Year of the Horse arrives, and things will be clearer, but don't think that we're done with relationship issues (or financial for that matter), as other influences will keep those on the front burner.

Seems to me that the planets are trying to teach us to play well together and, yes, to care for each other.

We'll also soon start feeling the "shadow" of the upcoming Mercury Retrograde period, February 6-28. If you want to know more about Mercury Retrograde (so you can use its energies constructively, rather than having three weeks of drama or doing a three-week "duck and cover"), check out the article in the October issue of Tunnel Vision on my website.
