Week 5
What does it take to get over the edge?
1. Arousal
The first step is arousal. Sexual arousal is set in motion in one of three ways:
Visually
- We see someone or something we find arousing.
- We see an image of someone or something we find arousing.
Physically
- We touch ourselves in a way that is arousing.
- Someone touches us in a way that is arousing
- Pleasurable sensations - anywhere in the body - may lead to arousal.

Psychologically
- We think a thought that arouses us.
- We feel an emotion that arouses us.
2. Positive Feedback Loops
The visual, physical and psychological information is relayed to the nervous system, triggering several positive feedback loops designed to steadily increase sexual arousal and interest in sexual activity:
- The sympathetic nervous system shifts into gear - muscles tighten, heart rate increases and breathing deepens. All of these increase excitation, making us more and more sensitive until arousal takes over our focus.
- Simultaneously, the parasympathetic nervous system triggers release of vasodilating agents that relax smooth muscle cells in the penis, clitoris, vagina and labia - leading to erection and tumescence.
- Ischiocavernosus and bulbospongiosus muscles engage, sequestering blood in the genitals, adding to the strength and sensitivity of the erection in women and men.
- Subtle contractions in the muscles in and around the pelvic floor and genitals during early stages of arousal add to the sensations of pleasure, increasing arousal.

3. Sexual Charge in the Body
Arousal circuitry and feedback loops build sexual tension to a peak of trembling stillness. Sexual tension swells beyond distraction or release, spanning the breathless space between tension and relaxation.
4. The Edge Appears

What To Bring . Pillow and blanket or sheepskin to sit and lie down on, 2 towels, coconut oil and bottled  water. I'd Like To Introduce: Ischiocavernosus & Bulbospongiosus
|
Genital Awareness
Pubococcygeus
A toned muscle is a responsive muscle. Most of us are familiar with the pubococcygeus:
- The pubococcygeus is a hammock-like muscle stretching from the pubic bone to the coccyx.
- Forms the floor of the pelvic cavity.
- Supports the pelvic organs.
- Allows for micro-movement in the vagina and base of the penis during masturbation and sexual intercourse.
- Responsible for urinary continence.
Ischiocavernosus and Bulbospongiosus
Few may have heard of the ischiocavernosus and bulbospongiosus:
Ischiocavernosus
- In males the ischiocavernosus stabilizes the erect penis.
- In females the ischiocavernosus contracts the vagina during orgasm.
Bulbospongiosus
- In males the bulbospongiosus contributes to erection, ejaculation, and the feelings of orgasm.
- In females the bulbospongiosus contributes to clitoral erection and the feelings of orgasm and closes the vagina.

Waking Up Ischiocavernosus & Bulbospongiosus Meditation
A practice for building a sexual charge in the pelvis.
Genital Awareness
Begin sitting on the edge of a straight back chair. Take a few moments to rock side to side and forward and back, to find your alignment. You want to be sitting upright without strain. Knees are 12-14 inches apart, feet are flat on the floor in line with the knees.
When you feel ready, close your eyes. Relax your jaw, soften your face, release your weight into the support of the chair and notice the natural rhythm of your breathing.
Place your hands on your belly, resting your finger tips on your pubic bone. With every inhalation, follow the breath all the way to your pubic bone, all the way to your finger tips. While it's true, the lungs do not reach this far into the pelvis, this practice trains our sensory focus, allowing us to expand our capacity to feel subtle sensations in the pelvis.
Inhale gently, following the breath to the pubic bone, then exhale as if you are gently forcing the breath out of the pubic bone. As you do this, you'll notice a pleasant contraction in the belly.
Remember to keep the jaw, neck, shoulders relaxed.
When you feel ready, contract the pelvic floor during the inhalation - as if you were stopping the flow of urine. You can experiment with contracting these muscles once or several times, through the duration of the in breath. When you exhale, relax these muscles. Continue for 21 breaths.
Rest. Sink your weight into the chair. Focus your attention in the pelvis. What do you notice?
When you feel ready to begin again, start by rolling the hips and pelvis in small circles on the chair. Create some space and relaxation in the lower body with your movements. As you continue the meditation, you may find your body wanting to move spontaneously - allow it.
Bring your breath and your attention back to the pubic bone. Place your hands on your belly again, finger tips on the pubis. Breathe down into your finger tips, then exhale as if you are gently squeezing the air out through the pubic bone. Begin to extend the breath 1 second beyond where you would normally stop - extend your inhalation and your exhalation by 1-2 seconds.
Then, softly contract the right ischiocavernosus as you inhale. Relax as you exhale. Contract the left ischiocavernosus on the next inhalation. Relax as you exhale. Continue for 21 breaths on each side, 42 total, then rest.
Next, softly contract the right bulbospongiosus as you inhale. Relax as you exhale. Contract the left bulbospongiosus on the next inhalation. Relax as you exhale. Continue for 21 breaths on each side, 42 total, then rest.
Shoulders, jaw and face are relaxed. Breathing is steady and expansive. You are extending the breath 1-2 seconds - both inhalation and exhalation.
In the final stage of the meditation - mix it up. First contract the left bulbospongiosus, then the right ischiocavernosus, the right ischiocavernosus, then the right bulbospongiosus . . .
Tone. Articulation. Sensitivity. Health. Awareness. Pleasure. Edge.

- At work.
- In the car next to you at the traffic signal.
- The barista where you get your coffee.
- Your neighbour.
- Tech support.
- On the yoga mat in front of you.
2. Notice one detail about each man, something you've never noticed before:
- The color of his eyes.
- The tenor of his voice.
- The way he moves when he speaks.
- How he stands.
- What makes him smile.
- The shape of his body.
Just notice. All day today. Don't come to any conclusions. Don't analyze. Don't even think. Just notice.
Then, this time tomorrow, write to me, tell me what you are feeling.

Dear Steve,
During our first class of the series I spoke about attraction and the intensity that can arise in class through these practices. It's natural to breakthrough to new levels of intimacy very quickly in this environment.
Most of us have two or three habitual responses to feelings of attraction:
- Supression . We block the feelings of attraction.
- Fixation . We obsess about the attraction.
- Expression . We engage - through verbal or physical contact - to take the attraction to the next level.
The invitation to wait 24 hours before responding to any attraction in class is an invitation to feel the attraction more - not less. To feel it as fully as possible over a 24 hour (at least) time period, to see what appears. It is an invitation to move beyond the habitual responses we already know and are familiar with - to discover the new.
