Greetings from your Editor...
Go ahead, admit you're happy...

Did you know that August was "Admit You're Happy" month? Sound silly? Well, maybe it's not so silly because isn't that the pinnacle we strive for? So flaunt your "happy" and it might even be contagious. Gettin' happy is better than gettin' the flu or something. You have to admit you're happier when you don't have that, right?

August 13 is also "Left Hander's Day. I think we lefties can attest to the fact that we're living in a right-hand world. But, dangit, they can't fool us because most lefties are ambidextrous! There are plenty of left-handed blues guitarists as well and you can catch a ride with them in Elwood's Bluesmobile this weekend. That makes me happy!

Birthdays of note: Aug 7 Magic Slim (aka Morris Holt) (1937); Aug 8 Joe Tex (1933), Jimmy Witherspoon (1920); Aug 10 Ronnie Spector (1945), Leo Fender (1908); Aug 12 Percy Mayfield (1920), Roy Gaines (1934); Aug 13 Jimmy McCracklin (1921), Son Seals (1942); Aug 14 Larry Graham (1946)

John Mayall :: A SPECIAL LIFE
A Special Life, the first studio album in five years for the legendary “Godfather of British Blues” John Mayall, is on Forty Below Records and distributed by Sony/RED. The new album was recorded at Entourage Studios in North Hollywood and produced by Mayall, with co-production, engineering and mixing by Eric Corne. A Special Life also boasts original cover art and design created by John Mayall.

The aptly-titled A Special Life serves as further testament to John Mayall’s boundless talent, vitality and ever-dynamic personality. Along with his accomplished band, he goes back to his roots on the new album with an eclectic mix of songs centered in the blues, but with diversions into rock and Americana.

Frank DuMont :: LET ME BE FRANK
"Detroit Frank DuMont, He's a good person, he's good with that guitar, He's played behind a lot of good people, He's played behind me, Detroit Frank is nothin but the best, later for the rest" John Lee Hooker (The Boogie Man).

About the CD: “From "Cross Road Blues" to "I'll Be There" (!), it's all genius! Of the eleven tracks on this collection recorded in 1991 and 2011-12, three are Robert Johnson songs and another three were by 2012 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Freddie King. My conclusion - if I can be frank about Frank - is that Detroit Frank DuMont is the greatest interpreter of these two rather disparate blues greats from two separate eras that I have ever heard.

Elwood's BluesMobile
Aug 9-10 Radio Show: SALUTE TO LEFTIES

We do not believe in passive aggressive, left-handed compliments around here, unless, of course, you mean paying compliments to left-handed people. It is about time we paid tribute to the left-handed blues superstars - Jimi Hendrix, Albert King, Otis Rush, and many more.

A salute to lefties! Next time in the Bluesmobile.
