TABLE  OF  CONTENTS
Greetings from your E-Editor...
Nourishing the roots ...

We often hear about various blues music programs for kids that aim to educate and possibly help pave the way for the next generation of the blues. There is a successful, vital network of Blues in The Schools programs and blues camps around the world that nourish eager youngsters. These efforts have proven to be rewarding for both young music lovers and budding artists.

But what about those on the other side of the "age coin?" — The elder bluesmen and women that have spent a lifetime of sharing their music ...those that lost their "stages," are destitute, or in poor health. This is where a heartfelt and worthwhile organization called Music Maker Relief Foundation has stepped in and stepped up to nourish the roots of Southern American Music. Just reading their mission statement makes my heart swell with empathy, hope and pride.

During the weekend of October 3-4 the Music Maker Relief Foundation will celebrate their 20th Anniversary in North Carolina. Over 50 "well-seasoned" artists will perform their music from the heart. You can find details in this week's issue on how to win tickets to an amazing homecoming celebration. Go ahead and revel in a joyful noise.

Birthdays of note coming up: Sept 23 Roy Buchanan (1939), Ray Charles (1930), Fenton Robinson (1935), Tiny Bradshaw (1905), Mighty Joe Young (1927); Sept 24 Tarheel Slim aka Alden Bunn (1924), Chick Willis (1934); Sept 25 Roosevelt "Booba" Barnes (1936); Sept 28 Koko Taylor (1928), Ben E. King (1938); Sept 30 Z.Z. Hill (1935)

CD & DVD Releases
The Holmes Brothers :: BROTHERHOOD
Brotherhood, the Holmes Brothers most recent release on Alligator Records, is a wealth of authentic, joyous blues, funk, R&B and soul, dominated by eight new Holmes Brothers originals. Also featured are sparkling remakes of songs by Ike Turner, William Bell & Booker T. Jones and Ted Hawkins, plus the band’s unparalleled version of "Amazing Grace."

Brotherhood was produced by Glenn Patscha (Ollabelle, Marc Cohn), Chris Bruce (Me’Shell Ndegeocello, Seal) and Hector Castillo (Brazilian Girls, David Bowie). It is another stellar chapter in The Holmes Brothers’ storied and still-evolving history. It’s also their most bluesy album to date, filled with roadhouse wisdom, late-night doo wop, a proto rock ‘n’ roll punch, soulful R&B and closing with an amazing dose of Sunday morning spirit. Read more details here...

Steve Freund – Gloria Hardiman :: SET ME FREE
Delmark released a buried treasure from the 80’s from Chicago label, Razor Records. Set Me Free is a rare collector’s item LP that features the standout vocals of Gloria Hardiman, killer guitar work from Steve Freund and stellar keys from Ken Saydak, all of their debut recordings. This never-before-on-CD recording features outstanding support from an all-star Chicago band, including living legend bassist, Bob Stroger, as well as the ever reliable bassist Harlan Terson, swingin’ sax from Sam Burckhardt, and the late, great Sunnyland Slim performing on three cuts. At the time, the results were so satisfying that they formed a band called The Blueprints and Stroger, Freund and Burckhardt were also Sunnyland’s longtime, popular last working band. Read more details here ...
