Blues Festival Guide
Sept 25, 2014
Vol 9/Issue 39
TABLE  OF  CONTENTS
Greetings from your E-Editor...
Reboot with the blues..
I have a new friend in New Zealand and I find we have a laugh when I mention summer heat and Autumn arriving in the US and am reminded that they are just wrapping up their Winter months. I think it's often easy to forget details like that outside of your own little centralized universe. For me that happens to be the Northern Hemisphere on the West coast where I've been roasting!

The passing of the seasons, no matter where we are, signal change, and some say change is good.... a chance for renewal. However, sometimes change can cause serious depression. September has been National Recovery Month which "promotes the societal benefits of prevention, treatment, and recovery for mental and substance use disorders." In this issue we've shared the heartfelt work that the Sean Costello Memorial Fund has done to help those in the creative arts field who are suffering with these types of issues.

Of course we've also shared the healing power of the blues with upcomings and recaps of the things that make our entire world go 'round. Just this weekend alone there are festivals to enjoy from California to Nevada, Missouri to Kansas, and Mississippi to Toronto, Canada. Enjoy and keep the blues light burning.

"I've got a light. It keeps on shining in my mind. Day and night. It just keeps burnin' all the time." - Sean Costello

Upcoming Birthdays of note: Sept 25 Roosevelt "Booba" Barnes (1936); Sept 28 Koko Taylor (1928), Ben E. King (1938); Sept 30 Z.Z. Hill (1935); Oct 1 Albert Collins (1932), George "Wild Child" Butler (1936); Oct 3 Stevie Ray Vaughan (1954), Billy Branch (1951), Keb' Mo' (1951), Deborah Coleman (1956)

Clarksdale, Mississippi's 2nd annual Delta Busking Festival Sept 26-28, 2014
(Clarksdale, MS) – This weekend, the Delta Busking Festival returns for its second year in blues-historic Clarksdale, Mississippi. It is part of the tri-state area's Bridging The Blues roster of events.

"As far as we know, this is the only blues festival created in tribute to the Delta's street musician tradition," said festival co-organizer Roger Stolle, also owner of Cat Head Delta Blues & Folk Art. "From Robert Johnson to Foster 'Mr. Tater' Wiley, the blues has always been built on the tips and exposure that street performances offer hard-working musicians."

This year's Delta Busking Festival runs Friday-Sunday, September 26-28.

Greater Clemson Blues Festival Recap
(Clemson, SC) - 2014 marked the third year our growing [Greater Clemson Blues] Festival drew large crowds here to the Upstate of South Carolina. We kicked it off with a Roots of the Carolina Blues event featuring Hunter Holmes and ended a week later with a tribute to blues legend Drink Small, a South Carolina native son.

During the week blues fans participated in our African American Heritage tours that focused attention on the legendary Littlejohn’s Grill, a fixture on the Chitlin’ Circuit during the 1950s. James Brown was one of the early performers at the Grill along with Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Fats Domino, Little Richard and dozens of other stars. Read all about it here.

Raisin' Cain; The Wild and Raucous Story of Johnny Winter
(Houston Press) - Raisin' Cain; The Wild and Raucous Story of Johnny Winter, is written by Mary Lou Sullivan. Ironically, even outside of his demise, the profile of the Beaumont native and former Houstonian was on the rise with the release of a career-spanning box set (True to the Blues), a documentary (Johnny Winter: Down and Dirty), and a now-posthumous "comeback" record, Step Back.

So it's a good chance to look back at Raisin' Cain. First published in 2010, it was the culmination of a rocky road for author Sullivan...
