Paul Winter's gift to my music
|
Paul Winter, his legacy and gift to my music
In 1970 I was a student at the University of Rochester thinking about becoming a music major. I had chosen the U of R because of the possibility of studying at their Eastman School of Music, one of the finest conservatories in the world.
Some friends told me that the Paul Winter Consort would be playing at Eastman's Kilbourn Hall and I joined them, not knowing what to expect. I had been hearing sounds in my head - the dreams of my future music with no idea of how to bring these sounds to reality.
As Ralph Towner, David Darling, Glenn Moore, Collin Walcott, Paul McCandless and Paul Winter opened the concert with Towner's composition "Icarus" I heard the heaven-on-earth sounds I had been dreaming of realized. The rest of this (for me) jaw dropping concert and later, the Consort's album "Road," showed me on a deep level that yes, this heaven-on-earth music I had been hearing in my head was possible and gave me the impetus to find out how.
That year I auditioned and failed and the following year auditioned and was admitted to the U of R's music program, but that's another story.
Love and Blessings,
Richard
