The Pompeiiana Newsletter created and edited by Bernard Barcio ran from 1974 through 2003. The newsletter offered a place for Latin students to publish comics, stories, games, and articles, and was a beloved resource for Latin teachers. In 2008, Barcio granted Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers the rights for all of the Pompeiiana Newsletter. B-C is proud to serve as curator for this archive and has made the issues available for teachers, students, and friends of the classics. Check out http://pompeiiana.blogspot.com/

Laurel Draper, editorial assistant, and I attended the annual meeting of the Illinois Classical Conference. While we enjoyed the conference, we were especially pleased to attend the banquet and celebrate Monmouth College legend Tom Sienkewicz as the 2014 ICC Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. Kudos to Tom on an award much deserved! And, Will Nifong, the 2014 Latin Teacher of the Year is one inspirational educator!

In many ways, NearPod is a teacher's dream. It is a way for us to deliver a presentation directly to our students' devices. Within those presentations, we can embed activities such as short answer questions, multiple choice questions, a sketch, polls, and external websites. In addition, it allows us to have a good control over what students are seeing and doing on their devices. From the teacher's point of view, using NearPod give us access to a good amount of information. For example, after presenting a new grammar point, I might choose to ask a few short answer questions to check for understanding. As my students answer those questions, I can see their responses coming in. I know right away the degree to which they've understood the concept and I can make a decision about whether to move on or to do a bit of re-teaching. NearPod provides us with a quick and easy check for understanding for all students. Setting up a NearPod presentation is a snap, especially if you have already existing PowerPoint presentations to use as your starting point. If you've got a PowerPoint that you'd like to convert to a NearPod, you simply import the PowerPoint file into NearPod using the NearPod website. There, it is converted into individual slides; then, you can add in the polls, short answer questions, multiple choice questions, etc. Once you've got your NearPod set up, you publish it to make it available to push to student devices. When you're ready to do the NearPod session with students, they simply open up their device to NearPod and input the key that you provide and the fun begins. Another wonderful feature of NearPod is that, in order to participate in a session, each student must provide his or her name. In the teacher's view, I can see the roster of students who are logged in. If I have 26 students in the class, I see a green number 26 at the top of the teacher interface. If a student loses focus and decides to navigate out of NearPod and into some other app, that number at the top of the teacher interface turns red. The teacher can then access the participant roster and see exactly who has left the session. Last year was my first year teaching in a 1:1 classroom. From time to time, I wondered whether my students were doing what they were supposed to be doing on the iPads. With NearPod, I don't have to wonder anymore! It's easy to see who is on task and who needs redirection. NearPod works on any web-enabled device. There are Chromebook, Windows, Android, and iPad versions of the app. To get started by setting up a free account, go to www.nearpod.com. ICC – Illinois Classical Conference Annual Meeting
|
Balmy sunny weather welcomed folks from across Illinois and Butler University professor Christopher Bungard to Chicago's Latin powerhouse Northside College Preparatory High School for the annual meeting of the Illinois Classical Conference, September 26–28, 2014. One of Chicago's selective enrollment high schools, Northside College Prep was recently proclaimed the #3 high school in America by Newsweek. Folks active in the National Junior Classical League recognize NCP as this year's National Certamen Championship Runners Up and previously as national champions. The indefatigable local host and NCP Latin master, Will Nifong, welcomed attendees to spacious and beautifully decorated meeting areas for the conference sessions and meals in the second floor and third floor atria respectfully.Bolchazy-Carducci editors Laurel Draper and Don Sprague joined representatives from Cambridge University Press and the ICC Book Exchange's Marilyn Brusherd for the book exhibits that lined the third floor atrium where participants gathered for meals and breaks. Multiple banners hung from the third floor atrium ceiling proclaiming a myriad of championships for the NCP certamen team. (How did we miss taking a photograph of that impressive display?) While Laurel addressed inquiries, Don managed to attend a couple of the sessions. The Chicago Classical Club cosponsored an illustrated luncheon lecture from Loyola University Chicago archaeologist Laura Gawlinski entitled "The Archaeology of Ancient Greek Democracy." Later Saturday afternoon, DePaul University archaeologist and ethnographer Morag Kersel shared her recent research in a joint ICC-Chicago Chapter of the Archaeological Institute of America session "The Lure of the Relic: Collecting the Holy Land."Saturday evening Chicago's Via Veneto hosted the banquet and awards ceremony.
Awards Committee Chair Virginia Anderson read a heartwarming tribute that celebrated the many achievements and the extraordinary service to the classics community of Thomas Sienkewicz, the Minnie Billings Capron Professor of Classics at Monmouth College. Tom hit the Monmouth pavement running in 1984 and has barely caught his breath ever since. His enthusiasm and industry has resulted in significant growth for the Monmouth classics program while his service to classics organizations especially the Illinois Classical Conference and the Classical Association of the Middle West and South has strengthened both. Tom’s wife Anne beamed proudly as his citation was proclaimed.
Tom Sienkewicz holds the silver bowl commemorating his Illinois Classical Conference Lifetime Achievement Award while Ginny Anderson looks on.
The banquet also celebrated the Farrand Baker Illinois Latin Teacher of the Year. How wonderful that the local host and much beloved William Nifong was honored as the 2014 Latin Teacher of the Year.
Surrounded by some of his students, Will Nifong graciously accepts the award and honors his students as his inspiration. Looking on in the right of the photo are Jennifer Jordt (Andrew High School, Tinley Park, IL) who delivered the citation, and Virginia Anderson.
Editor Don Sprague kicked off Sunday's program with a presentation on eyeVocab, a revolutionary system for vocabulary acquisition and retention.

Myth Is Truth: A Radio Series
|
The Fall(s) from Grace
Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers takes great pleasure in providing this fifth installment as a free download for classicists and students of mythology across the globe. Myth Is Truth, a series of interviews with Dr. Nancy Boyle as host and Dr. Lou Bolchazy as comparative mythology scholar, was broadcast by WLUC, Loyola University Chicago, in 1977, and by WRRG, Triton College, in 1978.In another iteration of Dr. Bolchazy's Myth Is Truth, Dr. Bolchazy "demythologizes" the biblical myth of humanity's fall from grace, utilizing similarities with other ancient religions to inform modern understanding of the fall. Discover, with Dr. Bolchazy, the universal nature of humankind's fall, the identity of the mysterious serpent in the Garden of Eden, and the story's implications for the human condition.
