Eddie Turner :: NAKED... IN YOUR FACE
Eddie Turner has done just about everything. A guitarist since age 12, he honed his skills alongside San Francisco's legendary Tracy Nelson & Mother Earth in the '70s and Denver's hard-hitting Zephyr in the '80s, before becoming a founding member of the Otis Taylor Band and later earning a prestigious Blues Music Award nomination for his own solo career. The Denver-based guitarist, singer and bandleader has toured the world, garnering countless fans and critical acclaim in the process. Yet, Naked ... In Your Face marks a first for Turner, who has never released an in-concert recording. The title tells you all you need to know: No shrinking violet of a live album, this vibrant set finds the musician at his most stylistically audacious, crossing boundaries with brazen confidence.

Jon Spear Band :: DEVIL'S HIGHWAY
Live Music Is Better was recorded by the Jon Spear Band before a live audience at the Southern Café & Music Hall in Charlottesville, VA on November 27, 2015. On that night, the band not only reprised some of their award-winning original songs from their debut album Old Soul, but also covered several red-hot blues songs in the imaginative style that has made them a favorite among a growing list of blues lovers.

The release of this second recording caps off a year of increasing success for the band, which saw them receive extensive airplay, numerous favorable reviews, and opportunities to appear with several major artists, while Old Soul captured the #24 spot on the Roots Music Report’s Top Contemporary Blues Albums for 2015. ...More details about this release here

Delta Blues Museum to get substantial contribution
(Clarksdale, MS) - "I don’t think that there’s any question that the blues is the bedrock of all American music .... Take away the blues, and you’re left with a very shaky hierarchy of American music." Robert Santelli, executive director of The Grammy Museum.

It was good news to hear last week that the Delta Blues Museum in Clarksdale is getting a share of money distributed by the Delta Regional Authority, along with federal and state partners, to benefit a variety of projects throughout Mississippi.
The museum will get $1.6 million — $163,903 is the Delta Regional Authority's contribution — to upgrade exhibits so they will be more interactive and, hopefully, more engaging for younger visitors who didn't grow up with the blues the way many older visitors did. ...Read more
London residents learn to sing the blues with launch of new choirs
(Hackney, London, UK) – The London Blues Choir starts two branches in Hackney, bringing the music of the Deep South to the borough. “You don’t have to have a voice like Adele… The most important thing is to be completely connected with the emotion of the music,” says choral director Hannah Northedge.

Northedge is the founder of London Blues Choirs, which launches its Hoxton branch at the Rosemary Branch theatre on Saturday 19 November (there’s a free taster session on Saturday 6 November from 12–2pm).

Northedge plans to set up blues choirs all around London. Another Hackney branch rehearses every Monday at Paper Dress Vintage on the Narrow Way.
Some 20 budding bluesmen (and women) have joined up, says Northedge.

Jazz Record Mart's Bob Koester celebrates 84th birthday and a new store
(Chicago, IL) - When you've spent most of your life in the record business, how do you celebrate your 84th birthday?

By opening a record store, of course, which is how Bob Koester — owner of Chicago's Delmark Records label and founder of the shuttered Jazz Record Mart — marked the grand occasion last weekend.

Technically, Koester turned 84 on Sunday [Oct 30]. But because Bob's Blues & Jazz Mart, 3419 W. Irving Park Rd., is closed that day, Koester marked the birthday and celebrated the new store on Saturday afternoon [Oct 29], inviting music lovers to congregate there.

It's a fair bet that not many folks feel like launching a business at such an exalted age. But Koester looked and sounded as if he couldn't be happier, a standing-room-only crowd packing the place.
