10th Annual Mississippi Blues Marathon & Expo Jan 5-7
(Jackson, MS) - The Mississippi Blues Marathon celebrates its 10th anniversary this year and the race will take place on January 7, 2017 in downtown Jackson, Mississippi’s capital city. With live music before, after, and throughout the course, the Mississippi Blues Marathon proves to be one-of-a-kind.

Since our inaugural race in 2008, the event has worked to showcase Jackson and the rich Blues history of the state. A portion of proceeds going to the Blues Foundation and its efforts to support local Blues Musicians and also the MS Blues Commission’s Benevolence Fund, which helps musicians in need.

Tips for the IBC Jan 31-Feb 4 (for musicians & fans)
By Ricky Stevens - It's almost time for The Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge [Jan 31-Feb 4]. Here are some (hopefully) helpful hints.

Going to the International Blues Challenge? Good for you! It's the World's Largest Gathering of Blues Musicians, and it's fun. I've been involved with the IBC since 1999. I've been a venue coordinator and chaired the Blues Foundation Board's IBC committee. I've been a fan on the street and the guy backstage at the finals. If it's happened at the IBC I either did it, saw it, or know the guys who were there when it happened.

This is something you've heard but many of you don't (and won't) believe.
Winning the IBC should not be your only goal. Use this time to network and showcase. Make contacts and do the things that you do best when you get onstage. Have fun.

Susan Tedeschi and Homemade Jamz both came in second. Watermelon Slim didn't even make the finals. All of them have done OK.

Here are a few suggestions based on my time at the IBC...

Eric Sommer :: BROOKLYN BOLERO
Brooklyn Bolero, performed by Houston and Boston-based singer, songwriter and guitar player Eric Sommer, captures his remarkable acoustic guitar skills in a perfect setting. Surrounded by an outstanding Brooklyn trio that includes New Jersey session players Jim Oakley on percussion and Zach Smith on bass, this record’s got everything: back-up harmonies, superb vocals and tight arrangements, blistering slide guitar and harmonica grooves that recall the great John Mayall (Bluesbreakers) and Magic Dick (J. Geils Band).

Eric started his musical career in the Boston area and has been a regular player on many national tours and showcases. He worked in Europe for two years with Nick Lowe and acts Bram Tchaikovsky and Wreckless Eric on Danish, German and British rock stages, returned to Boston and formed The Atomics, a cult power-pop band in South Boston. ...Read more about this release
