At a recent symposium on Unity in Diversity at Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat Bahamas, where my wife Carol was speaking, I had the opportunity to experience the mantra of Tantric Priest Krishnan Namboodiri and the kirtan of Guara Vani  - all in the same evening! Mantra is a sacred sound, word or words which has a specific power or effect. Kirtan is a musical story of spiritual significance usually taking the form of call and response. Both raise the vibration of the performer and listener to sublime levels. As a student of Healing Sound I was blessed to have the opportunity to  experience these two forms of mantra - one spoken and one musical - by masters of the craft.  In observing the effect it had on my energy system, the notable difference between the two was that the spoken mantra, without music, invoked me to go deep inside and immerse in stillness; whereas the musical/sung mantra invoked an outwardly focused communal joyousness. Both substantially raised my vibration and placed me in a highly open and receptive state.
