Lama Choepa Tsok Offering Puja
Gelek Rinpoche

February 16, 2017
7:30 PM (ET)

Drepung Loseling Monastery, Inc. is saddened to learn of the passing of Gelek Rinpoche, founder of Jewel Heart, a dharma center based in Ann Arbor, MI with chapters in other American cities, Malaysia, Singapore and the Netherlands.  Rinpoche was a beloved teacher, among the last living lamas to be educated in Tibet, and a seminal figure in bringing dharma to western practitioners.

In addition to prayer ceremonies being held in India at Nyari khangsten and elsewhere, a Lama Choepa puja will be held this evening in the prayer hall at Drepung Loseling Atlanta to request the speedy return of Rinpoche’s next incarnation.

If you cannot join in person, we encourage you to attend via Livestream.

Over his life, Rinpoche played many important roles in preserving both the dharma and Tibetan culture after following His Holiness into exile in 1959.  He edited and printed over 170 volumes of rare Tibetan manuscripts that would have otherwise been lost to humanity, served as the director of Tibet House in New Delhi, India, and as a radio host on All India Radio.  He also conducted over 1000 interviews for an oral history about the Communist invasion of Tibet

In the U.S., Rinpoche is perhaps best known as a teacher gifted for articulating the relevance of the Buddha dharma to modern life, making him not only an extraordinarily effective teacher, but also an extremely popular one.  The student of His Holiness’s tutors, Rinpoche was able to convey teachings in a manner that was completely authentic, while incorporating modern understandings from science, psychology, and western culture.

Educated at Drepung Loseling, Rinpoche provided guidance and encouragement to the Mystical Arts of Tibet tours since their inception, and lent his support in whatever ways he could to Drepung Loseling in Atlanta.  A steadfast friend and adviser, he attended the consecration of the new center by His Holiness in 2007.

Geshe Lobsang Tenzin Negi and the entire Drepung Loseling community in Atlanta wish to express their deepest condolences to Rinpoche’s wife, Colleen, and to the entire Jewel Heart community.

The loss of this luminary will be felt throughout the world.
