THANK YOU AND SHALOA,
Happy Spring to our region, So Cal, So Nevada, and Hawaii
We have been a busy region this year. May is our month for celebration. We have three festivals celebrating International Feldenkrais Week. There may be more but I have not been contacted about them. We are joining together as a community as well as putting a "shout out" to greater Southern California public. Our advanced training in June with Donna Ray will carry that further as we bring other professionals or those interested in our method to experience a day with us. The celebration continues at our
2017 Guild Conference in Seattle in August. We hope to see everyone at all or some of our events.

"I’ve been a psychiatrist for over twenty years and I must say that meeting Donna was one of the most useful and most intensely lived moments of my continuous formation. I’m convinced that the only possible therapy to achieve effective results in an integrated therapy.”
Dr. Elisabetta Mascazzini (Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist)

"It was moving to observe how Donna connects to others. She immediately intuits what the person needs most in a moment…. she knows immediately how to establish connection, a look, silence, a small touch, profound communication, completely at the other’s service, without judgement. "

In Celebration of Dennis Leri- The Aristotle of Our Time

Stacy Barrows

On April 7, 2017, we gathered together at the beautiful Universal Unitarian Church. This tranquil and serene place sits on a hilltop overlooking San Rafael, California. One could see why Dennis Leri taught many Feldenkrais workshops here. Over 150 close friends and family were here to celebrate his life.

As one might expect, I’m quite intimidated to write about someone so prolific. But, I wanted to share some thoughts with our Feldenkrais Family that were unable to attend.

The site was beautifully located and the weather was perfect. Maria Leri (Dennis’s soul mate) opened the services to honor him. There were a variety of guests, many from the Feldenkrais community and some from the Buddhist Sangha. Close friends shared beautiful stories that enriched the experience of knowing him. This was accented with a photo gallery in a quiet sitting room, providing more insight into Dennis's life. From crew cut, mullet, to professorial grey, Dennis had a handsome look and style that many women would find irresistible.

In Mental Furniture, Dennis wrote that Aristotle believed that every living and every inanimate thing has purpose. This would hold for Dennis as well. He lent his whole attention to every thing and being to follow his true interests and thirst for learning.

Further reflection included:

Acceptance-Dennis continually accepted anyone from where they were and fully acknowledged their presence. He also accepted his illness with grace and dignity.
Google Guru-Before there was Google, there was Dennis. He could be asked and answered on any subject and would expound on it with such incredible memory and specificity on the subject.
Noble Spirit-There was a sense of nobility with Dennis, and with him, you felt own spirit to rise.
Alternative Narrative-One of my favorite stories was how Dennis could shift the focus of a topic or discussion that would lead us to find new unexplored discoveries on our own.
Endlessly Interesting-No matter the subject, be it the use of explosives for preparing the ground for farming, taking Ayahuasca to boost conscious awareness or other existential quests to the unknown, you found yourself endlessly interested in listening to Dennis.
Wise- One profound story came from someone that had countless lessons from Dennis, and he shared how intimate Dennis’s touch was and how this will be carried on through his lifetime.

Finally, Craig Leri (Dennis's younger brother) asked that we reference our thoughts and remembrances of Dennis in the current context because that is what Dennis believed. So, Dennis, our brother, our friend, our mentor-teacher, until we meet again....

“Wherever you go in the world, you are following your heart.” D. Leri, 2013
Of Note...... leadership positions to be available
Ellen will be stepping down as regional rep and treasurer at the end of her 2 year term on December 31st 2017. I am planning to stay on as co rep, if elected. We are hoping our secretary and librarian will continue.
We need two more members to volunteer, one as co rep and one as advanced training chair. We have someone, the wonderful Mary Wagner who volunteered to take on being treasurer.  Newsletter editor can fit into one of these categories. We would like you to start thinking about this, visualizing yourself as part of this team.  Please let us know if you are interested. We can talk more about the responsibilities and time required. This will be necessary in order for our region to remain as active as it has been this year.
