Alki UCC Weekly Messenger July 28, 2017
From the Pastor
Many thanks to those of you who actually remembered to bring something of spiritual significance to you for the altar last Sunday. I never know how these things are going to turn out! I wish I’d had time to take a photo after worship before the precious items were gathered up and taken home, but some of the things I remember seeing were a brown stuffed horse, a small black metal crow, an AA anniversary token (congratulations!), a copy of J. Philip Newell’s book Christ of the Celts, a coffee mug, a painting of a sunflower, a round river stone, a photograph. I only wish we’d had more time to hear a brief word about each object and what it means to you.

This will be my last Sunday with you for a while. On Tuesday or Wednesday I’ll be signing out for three weeks of vacation followed by a week of study leave/planning time. I look forward to doting on my dear Mary, who has seen very little of me the last four-five weeks, clearing my head, catching my breath, stretching my muscles, reading a good mystery, and kayaking various lakes in the West Kootenays of British Columbia.

I’m still working on the line up, but three of your guest preachers will be Terry Teigen, Bruce Wilson and Susan Fairo — all good friends of this church and solid preachers.

The Board of Directors and its AKP subcommittee have a firm plan in place to have Alki Kids Place open for the new school year, and kindly rejected my offer to delay my vacation a week in order to help with that — so as soon as I get loose ends tied up, off I go! Meanwhile, I hope to see you on Sunday morning for one last shower of blessing prayers, this time for the earth and all who dwell upon it.
— Diane

August 5 Concert to be Rescheduled
The "Music with a Heart" concert previously set for Saturday,
August 5 will be rescheduled to a September date.

Stay tuned for details.

Summer Food Drive Challenge
to Benefit the West Seattle Food Bank
The first barrel is BARELY full ... let's step it up for a strong finish by September 5!

For many children in our community and across the US, summer is the hungriest time of year. Our most vulnerable
kids lose access to school feeding programs and food donations dwindle.

Last summer, Alki UCC joined with Admiral & Fauntleroy churches in a friendly competition to collect at least 1,000 lbs each.
This year, we're upping the donations challenge to 2,500 lbs.. Let's fill up that barrel!

Let's come together to provide a summer meal for the residents, and explore more volunteer opportunities when at the facility.

Please contact either Cinda Stenger: or Sandy Johnson if you are interested in putting together a fun meal. A summer BBQ would be grand!
