Alki UCC Weekly Messenger September 29, 2017
From the Pastor
Dear friends,
The Board of Directors and I have called for a special meeting of the congregation on Sunday, October 15, right after worship (and a short break for coffee). We need to share important information with you and get your input for future direction.

This is not just a typical business or budget meeting, which many of you understandably choose to skip and leave to the church geeks. This is a time for the whole Alki UCC family to come together.

You will get more info next week from the Board. In the meantime, please put this on your calendar now. Sunday, October 15. For you Seahawks fans (of which I’m one), the good news is that it’s a “bye week” for the Seahawks, so there’s no game on Sunday.

It’s a “Be There” week for anyone who cares about Alki UCC, so please Be There! We should be done by 12:30 pm, maybe even sooner, but please allow that much time.

Thank you so much,
Pastor Diane

CROP Walk
Sunday, October 1
12:30 pm sign-in for 1:00 pm walk
Join the Alki UCC CROPWalk Team!
The walk takes place Sunday, October 1 after worship, leaving from Alki UCC for an easy loop along Alki beach.

For the last two decades, we’ve walked in solidarity with others who journey for resources, whether these individuals are displaced, located far from water/food sources, or are homeless within our own communities.

Contributions are dispersed globally, with 25% going to support well-known resources fighting hunger in our own community, including Mary's Place, the West Seattle Food Bank and the White Center Food Bank.

Shannon Peterson invites you to join the Alki UCC team of hunger fighters.

For more information, to register online or to make a donation, visit www.crophungerwalk.org/seattlewa

Even if you don't walk, your donation is welcome!
* Continuing the Conversation on Racism: from Mary Douglass
This is last minute, but I welcome anyone who’d like to join me tomorrow for this workshop and documentary, “Traces of the Trade.”

Inheriting the Slave Trade:
One White Man's Story of History Complicity and Redemption
Film Screening and Workshop
Saturday, September 30, 1:00 to 4:00 pm
East Shore Unitarian Universalist Church
12700 SE 32, Bellevue
Learn how the legacy of human enslavement continues to impact us today. Presenter Tom DeWolf is a direct descendant of the largest slave-trading family in the US. The presentation chronicles his journey to come to grips with his public/private history. Achieve a greater understanding of key equity issues as we work to move forward.

East Shore Unitarian Church is where Louise Wilkinson, our facilitator for our “Sacred Conversations on Race” series is an active member.

I will be part of the workshop discussion as a member of the local group of Coming to the Table, an organization that seeks to heal wounds from racism that is rooted in the United States’ history of slavery. If you’d like to drive with me, or want more information, email me or call (206) 406-2160.

Are you a Boomer who wants to look at the changes you’ll be facing in the years to come? If so, come join our new book club that will be reading Live Smart After 50! The Expert’s Guide to Life Planning for Uncertain Times, led by Dan Kennedy.

We will be meeting for five Monday nights for an hour starting at 6:30 from October 9 to November 6. Depending on interest we may run the club several times. This first group will be made up of Dan plus the first seven people who contact him at dan@resultsthatmatter.com.

The book is available on Amazon.com. Please have the first two chapters read in time for our first meeting.

* Light Dinners for Dayle Banks
Dayle will be recuperating at home from her recent ankle surgery for at least the next two weeks. Emily Hitchens of the Alki UCC Parish Care team is coordinating transportation and general household help for Dayle, but we could still use help providing some light dinners while Dayle is still housebound.

If you can help out with a dinner or two, please contact Dayle directly. She lives in the Alki neighborhood, just a couple blocks from the church.
* In Our Circle of Prayer
Prayers

Joe Mitter is in Highline Hospital today after suffering a heart attack yesterday. Surgery and two stents have opened up the main artery, which was almost totally blocked, but he’ll be in the hospital for a couple of days at least.

Dan Kennedy asks for prayers for his brother Bill, who is having heart-related surgery today (Friday).

Dayle Banks is still recovering at home after major foot surgery several weeks ago. She needs some assistance with meals and simple household tasks; if you can help out please contact Emily Hitchens, who is organizing the helper list.

Speaking of Parish Care ...
We need a few more people on the Parish Care Team. This group helps us respond to the practical needs of church members and friends in times of illness, death, and grief, as well as times of joy such as after the birth of a child. The team is not necessarily responsible for doing the caregiving, but to make sure it’s getting done. If you’d like to learn more please contact Emily Hitchens or Pastor Diane.

It’s World Communion Sunday, so the celebration of communion is at the heart of our worship time this week.

The text for the day is from Paul’s letter to the church in Philippi (Philippians 2:1-13), a beautiful passage about our unity in Christ.

After worship we’ve got another new members class, and the CROP Walk begins at 1:00 pm (registration opens at 12:30 pm).

Thank you, Doug!
Doug Gunwaldsen has been serving as our church Treasurer since mid-2016, kindly taking up the position in order to give Lowell Park a much-needed retirement from the job. Last week Doug informed the Board of his desire to resign from the position, effective immediately, though he is available to sign checks for a while as we look for a new Treasurer, and Lowell Park will also help out. Most of the financial reports and payroll work are now done by our bookkeeper, Michelle Doherty.

Doug is happy to speak with anyone interested in becoming our new Treasurer. Very basically, the Treasurer’s role is to keep a close eye on church finances, based on reports from the bookkeeper regarding income, expenses, and account balances; write checks as needed or as directed by the Board; make a monthly report to the Board of Directors; and present a full financial report to the congregation at the Annual Business Meeting.

Please speak with Doug, Lowell, or Rod Peeler if you have the skill set and interest for this important role.
* Sunday School
Hi all!

School has started and we are all trying to get used to our new Fall routines. Mother Nature isn't making it any easier by sharing such wondrous weather!

This Sunday is the Crop Walk so hopefully it will hold out but if not I'm sure it will still be a fabulous event. I've had such a good time participating the last couple of years ... the camaraderie and fellowship and togetherness always make it feel more like an "outing" than a fundraiser!!

This Sunday in class I will be exploring with the kids what it means in modern society to be a Christian. How does your friend react when you say you have a relationship with God? Does it affect other things in your life and if so, how?

How to we display our values and carry ourselves in school? Does praying come easy to you? Lots of things to explore and as usual I will probably end up learning more than the kids. Not MY fault if they are so dang smart!

Be well my friends, times can be tumultuous but we all know who loves us and what is important, God, family and each other!
Peace, love, joy,
Candi Terao
