Priscilla Hernandez, wife of former Blues Foundation President/CEO Jay Sieleman, has affectionately been known as the "unofficial first lady of the blues." She didn't work at the Blues Foundation when Jay was in office but, she's been a volunteer for years, and took on the role of hostess of the blues community.

Grainne Duffy :: WHERE I BELONG
With a voice that is as passionate as it is raw and honest, accompanied by simple melodic and well phrased guitar lines, this is what you have in Grainne Duffy – an artist everyone will be talking about. A singer of real integrity as depicted by The Sunday Times.

Guitarist Magazine describes Grainne Duffy as having a “deliciously soulful voice and gutsy blues-inflected guitar work in one compelling package.” Audiences are the world are agreeing after seeing Duffy perform at famous music festivals including: Glastonbury, Woodford, Blue Balls, Blues du Passion, and Tremblant International Festival. The industry is taking notice too. Last year, Duffy had the honor of recording with producer Justin Stanley (Beck, Eric Clapton) and multi-Grammy Award winning engineer, Adam Ayan (Madonna, The Rolling Stones) and released her long-anticipated third album.

Duffy’s new CD, Where I Belong, is a true testament to her talent as a vocalist, guitarist and songwriter. ...Find more about this artist and release

2018 Blues GRAMMY’s Awards and a Token
(NEW YORK, NY) - Taj Mahal & Keb' Mo' accepted Best Contemporary Blues Album for TajMo at the 60th GRAMMY Awards on January 28, 2018. The Rolling Stones “surprisingly” won Best Traditional Blues Album for Blue & Lonesome. I just discovered an amusing and informative take from Andy Cush for Spin on the Stones win for, of all things, this particular album.

The ceremony was held at New York’s Madison Square Garden and it was the first time in 15 years that the awards did not take place in Los Angeles.

Two Trains Runnin’, with a soundtrack featuring songs by artists such as Mississippi Fred McDowell, Skip James, Charlie Patton, North Mississippi Allstars, Buddy Guy & Junior Wells, Gary Clark Jr., Chris Thomas James, Son House, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Robert Johnson, Bukka White, Mississippi John Hurt, Valarie June, Robert Wilkins and more, was nominated for Best Music Film, which is commendable and heartening, but did not win.

2018 Cincy Winter Blues & Heritage Fest Feb 2-3
(Cincinnati, OH) - The Cincy Blues Society present its annual Cincy Winter Blues & Heritage Fest February 2-3 at the Duke Energy Convention Center (525 Elm St, Cincinnati 45202). The Fest, coined the “hottest event of the Winter,” will feature 5 stages and 40+ acts. Headliners include Southern blues-rock guitar wizard, vocalist and songwriter Tinsley Ellis; musician, songwriter and vocalist Noah Hunt, the Cincinnati native who has fronted the Kenny Wayne Shephard Band since 1998; Samantha Fish, well-known as a purveyor of blues, having been lauded by such legends as Buddy Guy, the Royal Southern Brotherhood and Luther Dickinson, her real love is simply raw, scrappy rock and roll; the double lead guitars, a hard-driving rhythm section and soul-scouring vocals of jane Lee Hooker, and many outstanding local and regional artist also performing.

Tickets are $25 per day or $45 for the weekend and can be purchased on line at Brown Paper Tickets or at the event on the day of the show.

Turn on your radar devices… it’s Billy Thompson!
To many it would seem that Billy Thompson has lived under the radar within the broad musical community, even though he has been steadily working in the industry for a decade or two or four (but whose counting), with his first album Coat of Many Colors released over 30 years ago. But to those who have happened upon Billy’s soulful singing and guitar playing, the radar has been fine-tuned to pick up the next signal of activity. And here it is!

Billy’s latest release titled simply BT has hit the airways and has been garnering positive reviews. Billtown Blues writes “BT is Thompson's eighth release, and, like a fine wine, he is getting better with each passing day. Straight-ahead blues, R&B, a hint of blue-eyed soul, funk, blues/rock and a bit of honky-tonk, this is a well-rounded album that, through it all, never loses sight of the blues in its many form...

Bluesfest fans brainstorm for better, safer music festival
Andrew Duffy/Ottawa Citizen
(OTTAWA, CANADA) - More than 100 Bluesfest fans brainstormed ways to make Ottawa’s premier summer music festival safer and more crowd friendly at a public meeting Tuesday [1/30].

The two-hour meeting at Tom Brown Arena was organized by the RBC Bluesfest board of directors after an unusual volume of feedback following the 2017 festival.

Bluesfest has attracted an increasingly youthful crowd in recent years with artists such as Skrillex, Migos and 50 Cent, but those younger audiences have also raised issues about underaged drinking, drug use, public urination and crowd safety. They’ve added to perennial Bluesfest concerns such as weather, traffic, finances, lawn chairs and beer prices.

It was a mostly older crowd that attended Tuesday’s meeting, with the vast majority expressing a desire for better security and crowd control. Offered one participant: “Certain types of music attract a certain type of atmosphere that requires more security.”
