Mindi Abair And The Boneshakers ::
THE EASTWEST SESSIONS
Like many first-class leaders Mindi Abair (pronounced with a long A plus Bear) knows how to surround herself with greatness. She has been electrifying audiences with her dynamic live performances and utter command of the saxophone since her debut album in 2000. No one since Junior Walker has brought saxophone and vocals in one package to the forefront of modern music, with a raucous tone and such dynamic stage presence. After eight successful solo albums, the two-time GRAMMY nominated saxophonist, singer, songwriter teamed up with powerhouse Detroit band The Boneshakers, led by guitarist Randy Jacobs and released the critically acclaimed debut Mindi Abair and The Boneshakers LIVE in Seattle in September of 2015.

After 2 ½ years of non-stop touring with the five-piece band that includes vocalist Sweet Pea Atkinson, drummer Third Richardson, keyboardist Rodney Lee and Derek Frank on bass, she called on the talents of renowned blues-rock producer Kevin Shirley (Led Zeppelin, Joe Bonamassa, The Black Crowes, Aerosmith) to guide them into the studio for their first studio recording.

Savoy Brown :: WITCHY FEELIN'
Veteran British Blues band Savoy Brown's Witchy Feelin' on Ruf Records proves the Devil still has all the best tunes. Witchy Feelin' promptly shot to #1 on Billboard Magazine's Blues chart and #1 on iTunes Blues “Top Albums.”

From the thrillingly brittle guitar riff that opens “Why Did You Hoodoo Me,” we are in the hands of a master, with founding member Kim Simmonds reigniting the seismic vocals and searing fretwork that established Savoy Brown’s linchpins of the '60s British blues boom. "On this album, I tried my best to get my voice in its power zone," he explains. "I'm a baritone singer. I like listening to singers I can relate to, such as J.J. Cale, Mark Knopfler, Tony Joe White and Tom Rush. For my guitar playing, I still get inspiration from Otis Rush, Buddy Guy and all the Chicago players I grew up listening to back in '63... but I always listen to new music too."

The free concert will feature world-renowned trumpeter Longineu Parsons and award-winning songwriter Billy Buchanan with his Rock 'n Soul Revue coming together under the stage name Dr. Neu & Blujafunk, according to a press release.

Vanderbilt students help preserve Jefferson Street’s musical history
Joan Brasher/Vanderbilt.edu
(NASHVILLE, TN) -Vanderbilt University students and Vanderbilt faculty are helping preserve an important part of Nashville’s musical history.Jefferson Street, once a vibrant corridor of live music venues and recording studios, launched the careers of many iconic blues, R&B, jazz and soul artists. From the 1940s through the 1960s, Ray Charles, Little Richard, B.B. King and many other rising stars could be heard there nightly.

“I listened to this music as a young man, without realizing what it was, and it was a shock to me to realize that a great deal of it got made right here,” says Rogers Hall, co-director of Vanderbilt’s Space, Learning & Mobility Lab (SLaM) at Vanderbilt’s Peabody College of education and human development.
To help preserve and honor the area’s rich cultural and musical heritage, students in the SLaM Lab have partnered with Lorenzo Washington, founder of the Jefferson Street Sound recording studio.
