11th annual Deep Blues Festival brings heavy blues, rock 'n soul to the crossroads of American music — Clarksdale, Mississippi

Clarksdale, Mississippi — The past, present and future of American music converge on the rusty little "bluestown" of Clarksdale, Mississippi, this October 11-14, 2018.

That's when the latest edition of the legendary Deep Blues Festival is unleashed. And fans who make the pilgrimage may never be the same.

LIKE NO OTHER FESTIVAL ON THE PLANET

Organized by hardcore roots music fans — a mix of Clarksdale locals and international transplants — Deep Blues Festival is not your typical music festival. It's the fest that they always wanted to attend but could never find.

"Look, there are plenty of amazing festivals with enormous stages, big anonymous crowds and rows of portajohns. They're fine, sometimes even great. But Deep Blues Fest is better," according to co-organizer Robin Colonas. "Our event aims for two things missing from that 'festipalooza' formula — authenticity and intimacy. At DBF, concert-goers enjoy the town, the venues and the people every bit as much as the absolutely killer musical lineup."

WHO'S ROCKING THE DBF FOR 2018?

This year's festival features the heaviest lineup yet with RL Boyce, Alvin "Youngblood" Hart & Muscle Theory, Jimbo Mathus, Psychotic Reaction, Bob Log III, Big George Brock, Reverend John Wilkins, Monsieur Jeffrey Evans & His Southern Aces, Jimmy "Duck" Holmes, Molly Gene One Whoaman Band, Robert "Lil Poochie" Watson & Hezekiah Early, and many more to come.

"In Clarksdale, we already enjoy live blues music seven nights a week plus about a dozen festivals per year, but I have to honestly say that this year's Deep Blues lineup freaks me out," declared Cat Head blues store owner Roger Stolle. "It's stunningly good. I can't wait."

WEEKEND PASSES ON SALE MARCH 1ST!

Why miss a single act? Why risk a sellout? Just 75 bucks gains you guaranteed admittance to all three nights (plus Sunday afternoon) of official shows at both the New Roxy and Shack Up Inn stages.

"Look, even if you plan to skip an act or two, even if you can't stay all four days, the Weekend Pass is an awfully cheap way to blow your mind," said Bill Talbot, another organizer of DBF. "I'm telling you. That's a lot of helluva lot of music for very little money."

A limited number of Weekend Passes go on sale March 1, 2018, only at  www.deepbluesfest.com

POST-APOCALYPTIC, DEEP BLUES VENUES

"Have you seen the New Roxy? Have you seen the Shack Up Inn? Ha! These places are incredible — like walking into a history book," stressed DBF supporter Toddy Cameron. "The word 'authentic' is so overused out there in the real world, but here, well hell, everything here is the real-deal."

The Shack Up Inn's stage is bolted into an old cotton gin, and the New Roxy is a two-stage venue carved out of a long-abandoned old movie theater — half covered and half open to the heavens. These aren't just venues. They're destinations.

In addition to the main nighttime Weekend Pass venues, there will be official "busking stages" scattered around town at places like Shacksdale, Cat Head Delta Blues & Folk Art and the Rock & Blues Museum during the daytime. And, of course, Clarksdale already has other live blues music around town every night (though separate cover charges may apply).

WANT MORE? BECOME A BENEFACTOR...

Deep Blues Festival also offers the unique opportunity to join the DBF family. Fans who become "Benefactors" add the extra financial support needed to keep this such a world-class event. As a thank-you, the fest gives Benefactors first dibs on accommodations at the world-famous Shack Up Inn and exclusive access to the Benefactor's Ball — a music event that is only for these special supporters.

This opportunity is above and beyond the Weekend Pass. Details at https://deepbluesfest.com/be-a-benefactor/

A BRIEF HISTORY OF DEEP BLUES FEST

In 2007, BBQ master Chris Johnson held the first Deep Blues Festival in a field just outside of the twin cities — Minneapolis-Saint Paul — well north of the Delta. While Johnson is no longer an active organizer, he is still a big fan. Considering Mississippi to be the festival's musical and spiritual home, he hand-delivered the fest to Clarksdale five years ago.

As Johnson put it, "Deep Blues is a life-changing musical pilgrimage."
