Tiny House Building Party
Next Friday, March 16 - Sunday, March 18
Please RSVP ASAP!
Hello All,

The building materials are on the way and dates are set for a Tiny House build!

Camp Second Chance
9701 Myers Way S in Seattle
Friday March 16
Saturday, March 17
Sunday March 18
We need to confirm a team of at least 8 people with some building skills per 6-8 hour day. This will assure we have a core group of builders to complete the work over the three-day weekend. We have secured a volunteer foreman to oversee the work, thanks to Walt Puckett from University UCC.

We also need support people for assisting the core group of builders, as well as volunteers for painting and furnishing the house after it’s built. (That may be on Sunday or a few days later) We also appreciate volunteers to provide food for residents and other volunteers.

Sign up for one, two or three days and please respond ASAP with the dates you are available to volunteer and in what capacity. (Building the houses, assisting the builders, preparing meals for the team/residents, painting/decorating interior/exterior, clean up, etc.). RSVP at herig1@comcast.net.

We will have a 10x20 heavy duty carport canopy shelter where we can set up and use our equipment. Please let me know if you have tools you can bring (nail guns, hammers, circular saws, etc.).

Thank you for your continued interest in volunteering with Alki UCC to build tiny houses, in partnership with LIHI.

Seattle is one of many cities across the country trying to give respite to its growing homeless population by building Tiny House communities in legal encampments. Tiny houses are a safe place to live, sleep, protect children and pets, store belongings and have insulation and locking doors (each house is about 96 sq ft).

In appreciation,
Kathy Herigstad

Ninth Circuit Rules in Favor of Youth Plaintiffs, Rejects Trump’s Attempt to Evade Constitutional Climate Trial
San Francisco – March 7
Chief Judge Sidney R. Thomas, writing for a unanimous three-judge panel of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the Trump administration’s “drastic and extraordinary” petition for writ of mandamus in the landmark climate lawsuit, Juliana v. United States, brought by 21 youth supported by Our Children’s Trust. The Court ruled that the Juliana case can proceed toward trial in the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon and that the Trump administration had not satisfied the factors necessary for an extraordinary writ of mandamus.

Julia Olson, executive director and chief legal counsel of Our Children’s Trust and co-counsel for youth plaintiffs said:
“The Ninth Circuit just gave us the green light for trial. We will ask the District Court for a trial date in 2018 where we will put the federal government’s dangerous energy system and climate policies on trial for infringing the constitutional rights of young people.”

Kiran Oommen, 21-year-old plaintiff from Seattle, Washington, said:
“The question of the last few years has not been ‘do we have a case’ but rather ‘how far will the federal government go to prevent justice.’ We have seen that they are willing to go to many lengths to cover up their crimes and maintain the status quo, but not even the Trump administration can go far enough to escape the inevitable tide of social progress. The Ninth Circuit’s decision affirms that we are on the side of justice, and for justice we are moving forward.”
Changes to Alki UCC Online Giving
The Board of Directors is changing our online giving system to one that will be more efficient and less expensive for our church. The current system will be discontinued by March 31, 2018, and everyone who pays their monthly pledge online has been notified to transition their accounts.

We already have a new system in place which may be used with either a credit/debit card OR your PayPal account. It is not a requirement to set up a PayPal Account to use this system.

You can still click on the big, blue donate button at alkiucc.org to make your secure online donation. You will be redirected to our contributions page where you will click on the PayPal button to donate online:

1) Enter your donation amount
Note: if you want to cover the transaction-processing fee that will be   charged to Alki UCC, you can add 2.2% to your donation total (for example: $2.20 on a donation of $100).
2) If desired, check the option box to "Make this a monthly donation."
3) Select "Donate with PayPal" OR "Donate with a Debit or Credit Card and follow the instructions

"Thanks" from Mike Crowley's Family

First, I personally want to thank those who attended the memorial service for Mike Crowley last Sunday. Though few of you knew him well, your presence was a powerful statement of what it means to “be the church” and make sure that every life, however difficult, is lifted up with dignity and remembered with love.

I have since spoken with Mike’s sister, Beth, in Wisconsin and his brother, Jay, and emailed them photos of the flowers they sent for the service, the photo of Mike and Katie that Russ Thornock had enlarged and framed, and a photo of the service that Russ discreetly took from the back of the sanctuary. They were so very grateful and asked me to convey their gratitude to you for the love and kindness Mike received here. It was a great comfort to them to know that he was not alone these last few years and had found a community in which he could belong and contribute.
 Pastor Diane
