Counter-terrorism course prepares 108 Fellows to face regional challenges

DKI APCSS supports ASEAN Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief exercise
The current co-chairs of the ASEAN Defence Ministers Plus Expert Working Group on Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (ADMM Plus EWG HADR) are Malaysia and the United States. As part of this co-chair role, both countries worked together to facilitate a table top exercise (TTX) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on July 25 and 26, 2018. DKI APCSS Associate Professor Benjamin Ryan had the opportunity of helping facilitate and review the TTX, and attend the meeting on July 27, 2018. Click here for full story.
Director Gumataotao Visits New Delhi
DKI APCSS Director retired Rear Adm. Pete Gumataotao was invited to deliver the “Inaugural Address” at the two-day Global Dialogue Security Summit held in New Delhi’s diplomatic area.  His topic was “The U.S. Indo-Pacific Strategy: What is the American vision of the Indo-Pacific Region?”

New papers, articles and/or OpEds by DKI APCSS faculty members:  
  
Dr. Saira Yamin wrote an article entitled "Women, Peace & Security Advancing Through Gender Inclusion." DKI APCSS prioritizes the U.S. Government’s National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security (WPS) as an imperative component of inclusion in the security sector. We are at the forefront of U.S. Department of Defense efforts to further its objectives. Click here for full article.
 
Lt. Col. Scott D. McDonald has a new opinion piece entitled “Wanted: A Strategy for the Indo-Pacific Region,” published by The National Interest. The article covers the Free and Open Indo-Pacific Strategy (FOIP) and offers the concept of Communities of Common Interests as a means for implementing it. Click here for full article.
 
Cmdr. Jonathan Odom published a paper entitled "A Modern-Day Pentagon Paper in a Post-Pentagon Papers World: A Case Study of Negotiations Between The Washington Post and the U.S. Government Regarding Publication of the 2009 Afghanistan Assessment."

Dr. Benjamin RyanDr. Benjamin Ryan recently had the opportunity of facilitating a session on noncommunicable disease (NCD) control and prevention in humanitarian crises at the annual Health Emergencies in Large Populations (HELP) course held in Honolulu, Hawaii, from July 30 to August 10, 2018. Dr. Benjamin Ryan also presented at the 42nd  Pacific Armies Management Symposium (PAMS), in Hanoi, Vietnam, Aug. 20-23 in plenary where there was a focus on addressing keys issues land forces need to consider in order to enhance capabilities to effectively respond to future HA/DR events.

Dr Mohan Malik participated in the Near East South Asia Center for Strategic Studies’ Strategic Forum 2018 on “Maritime Security in the Western Indian Ocean” in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates). He delivered a presentation on “Maritime Domain Awareness in the WIOR and the Quad” at the workshop that was attended by diplomats, military and government officials from the region.
 
Associate Professor Elina Noor presented on, “New Technologies, international humanitarian law, and the future of warfare: Cyber” at the 13th Southeast and Northeast Asian Session on International Humanitarian Law in Bangkok on 23 August 2018. Assoc. Prof. Noor also participated in the Japan-ASEAN Media Forum in Bangkok held on 25-26 August 2018, where she provided (i) a briefing on the “Indo-Pacific Region – Economy, Society, and Politics” from a Malaysian and Southeast Asian perspective; and (ii) an update on Malaysia’s strategic outlook following the country’s 14th general elections in May 2018.
