Alki UCC Weekly Messenger October 26, 2018
This Sunday, October 2810:00 am
Halloween! What’s not to love — ghosts, goblins, fabulous costumes and CANDY! But the holiday we sometimes forget about in the Christian Church is All Saints Day on November 1.

We celebrate those who have died as saints of the church; as the community of Saints we gather in to lift up those names who showed us the way of Christ.

Please join us this Sunday as we remember, celebrate and give thanks for those loved ones who are with us now in spirit.

Peace,
Bruce Wilson

Pastor Bruce's sermon is "Faith has made you well." Our scripture is
Mark 10:46-52. Julia Peeler is teaching Sunday School, and childcare for infants and toddlers has resumed in the Nursery.
Immigrant Task Force Meeting
This Sunday at 2:00 pm
Alki UCC Parlor
Please join our fellow concerned congregants of Admiral and Fauntleroy UCC as we work together to learn about and help alleviate the suffering of our brothers and sisters seeking refuge in our country.

The situation at our Southern Border is dire and heartbreaking.

To make matters worse, the current Federal position on immigration and refugees is alarming and begs for our response as a faith community called to live and act as Jesus Christ. — Cinda Stenger

Below is an excerpt from Guest Preacher Dale Hindmarsh's recent sermon titled "God of Refuge." Does his heart inspire yours to respond?

As we wander through the chaos of our nation’s response to persons seeking or who have found refuge within our boarders, we can justifiably moan with the psalmist, with Job, with the prophets, and with Jesus, “how long O Lord…”

Our faith calls us to first experience life through the eyes of the refuge seeker, the immigrant, before we wring our hands in fear and angered confusion. Our faith journey, historically and personally, is an immigrant story about a band of outcasts seeking shelter and refuge, Israelites who flee for their lives, seeking refuge in a land of promise and covenant with God.

When do we seek refuge for our lives? How do we receive those who come to us for refuge? How do we live within a world of awakening diversity? Will we welcome, or will we fear and exclude?
Attention Immigrant Advocates
Call for Urgent Action
YOUR voice is urgently needed on the Trump administration's proposed change to the federal rule on Public Charge, a policy that will harshly impact millions of immigrant families

The proposed rule change has been posted to the Federal Register and is now open for public comment.

As part of the Protecting Immigrant Families coalition in WA, we have a unique faith community portal to use. There, you can add your voice to the thousands of advocates across America who have already said NO to this cruel and unnecessary proposal.

Please write a comment today at: http://bit.ly/FANopposesPublicChargeRule.

A suggested message is below, but in order to be counted it is important to add a line or two from your unique perspective, a story, why you care about this issue.

As a person of faith I am deeply concerned about the impact of the proposed administrative rule change on our immigrant community members and their families. Our immigrant community plays a very important role in supporting the vitality of our local, state, and nation’s economy.

[ADD PERSONAL EXAMPLES HERE]

This rule change will impact the ability of our neighbors to access basic services like food, housing, and health care. My faith tradition’s values speak of welcome to the stranger, unity of the family, and care for the well-being of all who reside in our state and nation. For these reasons, the Department should immediately withdraw its current proposal and dedicate its efforts to advancing policies that strengthen, rather than undermine, the ability of immigrants to support themselves and their families in the future.

At a time of heated and divisive debate over immigration, Harvest of Empire is an acclaimed feature-length documentary that reveals the direct connection between the long history of U.S. intervention in Latin America and the immigration crisis we face today.

The Town of Alki:
Great Hopes and Fountainhead of Tears
Free Historical Presentation at Alki UCC Saturday, October 27 at 2:00 pm
Join Alki resident and historian Phil Hoffman for an engaging and provocative presentation on Alki's earliest days. Founded by Charles Terry in 1853, the Town of Alki was deserted by 1856. Hoffman examines the myriad challenges that led to the Town's demise, including the lack of fresh water and trade impediments caused by the surrounding steep hills and slopes.

The historian also illuminates the seldom-told story of Terry's nefarious motivations and business dealings that dispossessed the native Duwamish people of their lands — an egregious act of social injustice that persists to this day.
