Featured Authors Begin to
Line Up for 2019 Festival

No rest for the weary, as our fearless author recruitment team has been working hard to bring together another outstanding group of featured authors for the 10th Festival, scheduled for May 18, 2019. Here's a look at some of our early accepters.

~ Children's ~
Melinda Beatty is the author of the Heartseeker series, and was raised on a steady diet of science fiction, fantasy and unrealistic expectations. After living in boats, basements and attics, she and her husband now reside in Western Maryland with their two fierce mini-women and a Labrador who’s perpetually afraid of the trash can. Her passion for books spills over into her second career as an indie bookseller, where she shares her enthusiasm for reading and is reminded once or twice a week that she needs to put on pants.

~ Fiction ~
Therese Anne Fowler is The New York Times best-selling author of “A Well-Behaved Woman” and “Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald.” Her work is available in more than 20 languages worldwide. “Z” has been adapted as an original television series for Amazon Studios, starring Christina Ricci. “A Well-Behaved Woman” is in development with Sony Pictures Television. Therese earned a B.A. in sociology/cultural anthropology and an M.F.A. in creative writing, both from North Carolina State University. A proud member of Phi Beta Kappa and PEN America, she lives in Raleigh, N.C., with her husband, author John Kessel.

Elinor Lipman is the award-winning author of 14 books of fiction and non-fiction, including “Then She Found Me” (adapted as a feature film in 2008, starring Helen Hunt and Colin Firth), “The Inn at Lake Devine,” “Isabel’s Bed,” “I Can’t Complain: (All Too) Personal Essays,” “The View from Penthouse B” and “On Turpentine Lane.” Her rhyming tweets were published in 2012 as “Tweet Land of Liberty: Irreverent Rhymes from the Political Circus.” Her new novel, “Good Riddance,” will be published in February 2019 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Born and raised in Massachusetts, she lives in New York City.

Sarah McCoy is The New York Times, USA Today, and international best-selling author of “Marilla of Green Gables,” “The Mapmaker’s Children,” and “The Baker’s Daughter,” which was a 2012 Goodreads Choice Award Best Historical Fiction nominee. She is also the author of the novella, “The Branch of Hazel,” in “Grand Central,” “The Time It Snowed in Puerto Rico,” and “Le souffle des feuilles et des promesses” (Pride and Providence). Sarah’s work has been featured in Real Simple, The Millions, Your Health Monthly, Huffington Post, Read It Forward, Writer Unboxed, and other publications. She has taught English writing at Old Dominion University and at the University of Texas at El Paso. She lives with her husband, an orthopedic sports surgeon, and their dog, Gilbert, in Winston-Salem, N.C.

~ Non-Fiction ~
James Mustich is the author of “1,000 Books to Read Before You Die.” James began his career in bookselling at an independent bookstore in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., in the early 1980s. In 1986, he co-founded the acclaimed book catalog, A Common Reader, and was its guiding force for two decades. He has subsequently worked as an editorial and product development executive in the publishing industry. He lives with his wife, Margot, in Connecticut.

Garrett Peck is a Washington-area historian, tour guide and author of seven books. His latest title is “The Great War in America: World War I and Its Aftermath.” Peck leads history-oriented tours in the Washington, D.C., area for Politics & Prose and the Smithsonian Associates, as well as World War I Tour, Alexandria’s Historic Breweries, Walt Whitman in Washington Tour, the Jazz History Tour, the Temperance Tour and many others. This is Peck’s sixth time presenting at the Gaithersburg Book Festival, including the inaugural year in 2010.
Reminder: Seeking Professional Teachers, Writing Workshop Leaders
Professional teachers or writing workshop leaders — if you have a  fun, informative workshop idea for adults, teens or children, the  Gaithersburg Book Festival wants you!

Each year, the Festival offers attendees the chance to take free classes led by professional teachers, authors and publishers from around the region. Topics range from poetry and building suspense in a mystery story, to college essay tips and comic book basics.

We're now accepting applications for proposed workshops that will take place at the Festival, on Saturday, May 18, 2019.

The Festival Workshop Selection Committee will base decisions on a variety of factors, including the leader's teaching experience, topic appeal, and the need to ensure a variety of offerings. Proposed workshops should be 30 to 60 minutes long and specific in scope and target audience age range.

Submit your workshop proposal here. Applications are due by February 1, 2019, with invitations to present workshops emailed in early March 2019.
