Stories, Questions, Listening Hearts
Worship in Lent
|
“Lent is our familiar journey along an unknown path.”
This one-line synopsis gives the nod to both centuries of tradition and the reality that life, our own and the one we share, is always unfolding. As this community travels into Lent exploring possibilities for next steps, including the search for a new pastor, I expect you can relate.
In these weeks as I help lead worship, I appreciate the Lenten Design Team’s decision to have members offer some of their own stories of faith as part of each service. After these moments of sharing there will be a chance for folks to respond. Then, in my reflection on the Biblical passage for the day, I’ll plan to touch on a question that seems to be raised at this time in the journey of Alki Church.
The hope is to create a worship experience that will help further equip the congregation for what lies ahead, forming future vision with a deeper awareness of who you are as a uniquely gifted body.
March 10 – Luke 4:1-14
What does it mean to trust the Divine and what does that mean here and now?
March 17 – Luke 13:31-35
Barriers … fears … do we learn something from attempting “the impossible?” March 24 – Isaiah 55:1-9
When I’m seeking, hungry, thirsty, how do I sort it all out and how do I choose?
March 31 – Luke 15:1-3, 11b-32
Who gets lost and who is found and how do we come to the place of Shalom?
April 7 – John 12:1-8
How do we ultimately value the treasures we give and those we receive and by which standards? Holy Week
Palm/Passion Sunday, April 14 – Isaiah 50:4-9a
Who have been our listening teachers and which sustaining words have empowered us?

Rev. Terry Teigen Leading Lenten/Easter Worship and Providing Pastoral Care
|
We are happy to announce that the Lenten Design team is working with Rev. Terry Teigen, Alki UCC's visiting pastor for Lent and through Easter. In addition to leading worship, he is available for pastoral care during that period. Contact the Church Office for details.
Terry is a lifelong resident of the Puget Sound region. He received his MDiv from Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, CA, and was ordained as a United Presbyterian pastor. In 1984 Terry made the shift to the United Church of Christ and served Normandy Park and Admiral congregations in the Pacific Northwest Conference. In 2008 he became a spiritual care provider (chaplain) at Horizon House, a UCC-affiliated retirement community on First Hill. Now retired, Terry continues to engage in ministry. He and his life partner, Martha, have lived in West Seattle since 2001 and are happily involved grandparents of three granddaughters.
Join the Lenten Worship Design Team
Hello fellow congregants:
As you can see, Pastor Terry has been working with the Lenten Design Team to map out an exciting and meaningful plan for Lent. Each week, a member of the congregation will share a personal faith story, and another member will serve as liturgist and work with Terry.
We have filled some of the available slots, but there still is time for more of you to step up and volunteer. Please contact me to let me know what date works best for you!
Everyone in the Alki UCC family has gifts worth sharing. We look forward to hearing from many of you during this season of searching ... this season of Lent.
Peace, Joe Mitter

Saturday's Masquerade Gala was a lovely evening, a good time for all, and we raised money. Who could ask for more? We are so grateful for every single one of you who donated, volunteered, bought tickets and attended. You made this a success!
A shout-out to our awesome volunteers:
Gretchen Hawley, Nancy Hallberg and Peter Junkerman, who came in early to help set up the silent auction tables. Rod Peeler, who transported our auction items to The Hall and helped clean up after the event. Bonita Corliss and Dan Kennedy, who helped with check-in, raffle ticket sales, clearing the auction tables and assisting in the live auction. Patty Magnuson, who helped sell raffle tickets. Verona Ryan, who worked her usual magic on the decorations. Barb Oliver and Sandy Johnson, who greeted guests. Jennifer Stewart, from KHN, who, for the third year, took charge of all our computer check-in, recorded our sales, and monitored the live auction — an essential role that evening. Lori Dugdale, a friend who came to assist Jenn with the computer work. Mike Delaney, who made the live auction such fun, and Cindy Ogasawara, who gave a moving introduction to our “raise-the-paddle” beneficiaries. What a team! And Vicky Smith, who continued her always-amazing role of soliciting dessert donors, coordinating deliveries, setting up the table and running the dessert dash.
Next week in The Messenger: a thankful shout-out to our donors, our vendors, and a summary of the funds we raised.
Your grateful gala team, Charlie Hinckley & Julia Peeler

Editor's Note: Unbeknownst to each other, both Gala Co-Chairs submitted a special note of gratitude for the other Gala Co-Chair.
Personally, from Charlie: "a huge thank you to Julia Peeler, my wonderful partner in this, for all her work over the last several months!"
Julia expressed recognition from "a grateful congregation for all the planning, writing, and organizing Charlie took on that made for a fun, successful gala."

How you can easily help a local Honduran refugee family
|
Our partner synagogue, Kol HaNeshamah (KHN) has been sponsoring a Honduran refugee family. Magdiel, Mirna and two-year-old Joshua are seeking asylum in the United States.
Since they don't yet have legal status to work for pay, KHN has been underwriting their housing, food, utilities and other living costs.
The family has recently incurred unexpected medical costs and KHN is requesting our help.
Contributions of any size and grocery card gift cards are most welcome.
You can make a donation by:
♦ Writing a check to Alki UCC with "Refugee Family" in the memo line,
or
♦ Donating a grocery gift card, marked "Refugee Family."
Leave the check or card in the collections tray on Sunday or send to the Church Office at 6115 SW Hinds, Seattle 98116.
Learn more about Mirna, Magdiel and Joshua's journey in this video and here.
