How To Learn Jazz Standards
workshop presented by Jazz Night School
How do you learn a jazz standard? American flugelhornist Dmitri Matheny advocates a deep listening approach based on classic recordings (not sheet music) as your primary source. “Learning is all about listening,” Matheny says. “If you can sing it, you can play it!” In part one of this workshop, Dmitri outlines the basic elements of a song and illustrates how the melody is the “secret key” to understanding form and harmonic structure. In part two, he provides recorded examples, demonstrates specific techniques on his horn, and shares relevant anecdotes from his professional career and years of tutelage under jazz legend Art Farmer. In part three, he shares several advanced methods, including lyrical arpeggiation, tetra-scales, transcription, solo composition, guide tone lines — and more!
