Hi Everyone,

Hey everyone!  As I shared on Facebook, I don't have words to express my feelings about what is going on in this country. This situation is beyond tragic. I truly don't know what to say. But my heart does go out to all who have suffered throughout this experience. And I pray that substantive change for the better will emerge from all this.

I have to say, it seems almost superficial to continue to post about Israeli Dancing. But at the same time, it is also clear to me that it is important to continue to focus on our community and this activity that brings us together. In so doing, I believe it helps us all to get through.

So we will continue to "dance in place." And I am thinking ahead to our next session, this coming Thursday night. As announced previously, Marcelo Marianoff from Argentina will be our guest instructor. We are thrilled. I'll have more to say about that below.

For now though, I wanted to share with you one of the dances we'll be doing Thursday.  It is called Veshachanti, a great energetic dance from our friend, Yaron Malihi.  Sarah will present it in her segment, and perhaps do some teaching.  To prepare, here is a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqnugmfC24Q There are a number of videos out there, some perhaps in better focus. But for pure dancing, this one is hard to beat. Kol Hakavod to Yaron and Meliss!

As mentioned, Marcelo Marianoff from Argentina will join us as our guest leader this Thursday night, June 4 at Chicago Israeli Dancing - Virtual. The session will start at 7PM Chicago time. We plan to start with Marcelo around 7:30PM.  Marcelo will be teaching and then leading us in a few dances. With a nod to Bennett Robinson, who has been asking for this dance here for months how, Marcelo will teach Niten Le Ze Od Yom by Rafi Ziv. You will like it!  For those of you who like to do "homework," here it is:

And if you are so inclined, I encourage you to download the flag of Argentina and display it Thursday night!

This past TUESDAY May 26th we were honored to feature our friend and choreographer, and Machol Merkaz staff member to be, Elad Shtamer.  It was 3:30am for him and he totally rocked it.  Thanks so much Elad!

We return to Thursday nights this week on June 4th.

At Chicago Israeli Dancing - Virtual, you'll have noticed greater participation from Chicago leaders.  We'll still have a great mix of dances as chosen by all our national leaders, but more of the dances will be known to those who dance with us in Chicago.  Penny will continue to lead classics/beginner dances starting at 7PM Central time.  Oldies will be sprinkled throughout the program, rather than in a dedicated set.

Following our segment with Elad, we'll have segments led by Stuart Meyer, Rina Rinkewich, Phil, Sarah, Nina, Gabi, Penny, Deb Schermer joining us this week, and we welcome back Aaron!  Latishya will be on LOA and we hope she will be with us again soon in the future.

We'll continue until 11:30 or so.

BEGINNERS VIRTUAL SESSION - And in other great news, Penny is continuing her beginner's virtual session that she started on April 29th.  It runs from 7-8PM Central Time!  Please spread the word! zoom link  or ID=834 2711 4296 pswd = Mayim

Greater Chicago Jewish Festival
Goes Virtual for 2020
AND Goes Live to June 2021

We hope this message finds you healthy and safe. We hope your virtual Passover still felt like a real holiday and respite.

There is great hope that we will soon find relief from the horrifying impact of COVID-19. We all know that sometime in the month or months ahead some level of โ€œnormalcyโ€ will return to our homes, streets, businesses and communal gatherings and events. However, those of us who produce the largest Jewish cultural event in Chicagoland and the longest running Jewish festival in America cannot imagine that we will be gathering at the Greater Chicago Jewish Festival on June 7, 2020.

The Festival thrives on our community coming together: singing, eating, buying art, dancing and talking together. It includes hugs and catching up with friends as we share Jewish culture. None of this will likely be appropriate in early June. So please put these new Festival events in your calendar:

VIRTUAL 2020
On June 7, 2020 at 4:00 we will share 40 Years of the Festival. A virtual Greater Chicago Jewish Festival with great performances from the past 20 Festivals! AND new performances from David Broza and other acts that were planned for this year.
Go to JewishFestival.org on June 7 at 4:00 and
click on the Virtual Festival button.

LIVE 2021
The usual outdoor Festival will be POSTPONED to
June 13, 2021 (yes, 613).
4 stages, art fair, Kosher food fair, family activities and community hugs will all be part of it.

See you at the Festival!
