The Reverend Shawn Amos & The Brotherhood :: BLUE SKY
The Reverend Shawn Amos’ swampy Blue Sky, released under the moniker The Reverend Shawn Amos & The Brotherhood, is a collaboration between the Rev and some old friends: drummer Brady Blade (Buddy & Julie Miller, Indigo Girls), bassist Christopher Thomas (Norah Jones, Macy Gray), and longtime Rev guitarist Chris “Doctor” Roberts. Friends of The Brotherhood are the voices of Piper Amos, Sharlotte Gibson, and Kenya Hathaway, Matt Hubbard on piano, Wurlitzer, and Hammond organ; and Ben Peeler on lap steel, pedal steel, dobro, mandolin.

Since 2018’s acclaimed, politically charged Breaks it Down, the Rev has been on the road nonstop. 2019 saw him alighting in Texas, where the South begins, the West ends, and something else is taking shape – a world away, geographically and culturally, from his native Los Angeles. Here, he gathered the Brotherhood, creating a sense of home in his rootlessness. Blade, Thomas, and Roberts provide not only musical, but also spiritual and emotional support for embracing new territory, artistically and otherwise.

Unlike past Shawn Amos collaborations with Matthew Sweet and Solomon Burke, the Brotherhood is in it for the long haul. “Everybody feels pride of ownership,” the Rev says of Blue Sky. Clearly, from the barn-burning blues stomp of “Counting Down the Days” to the smoky R&B of “Albion Blues” to the rollicking “27 Dollars,” the Brotherhood is, indeed, down. The material showcases Shawn Amos’s songwriting like no previous Rev outing; here furious, there vulnerable; here gadabout and crazy, there forlorn and tender; all buoyed by musicians emboldening a beloved family member.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom film coming to Netflix Dec 18
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom starring Viola Davis is one of the most anticipated films of 2020, in part because it was the last film actor Chadwick Boseman made before his tragic death at age 43 after a 4-year-long battle with colon cancer. The film is based on August Wilson’s award-winning play from director George C. Wolfe,” and Denzel Washington serves as executive producer.

Wolfe’s star-studded adaptation of Wilson’s 1982 stage play of the same name, depicts Davis as Gertrude “Ma” Rainey, the legendary iconic blues singer from Chicago who became known as the “Mother of the Blues,” and who was one of the first blues artists to record her work.

The film is set during a recording session in 1927 in Chicago and shows Ma confronting her producer and manager over the control of her music. She also goes toe-to-toe with Boseman’s character Levee, an ambitious and skilled trumpeter in her band who is determined to strike it big in the music business.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom will begin streaming on Netflix December 18. Here's the official trailer.
Delta Blues Museum New Virtual Tours feat. Pro Blues Artists
(CLARKSDALE, MS) - Delta Blues Museum is announcing the creation of new virtual tours made possible through funding from the Mississippi Arts Commission's (MAC) Rapid Response grant program. The new virtual tours, created by Mississippi filmmaker Coop Cooper, feature Clarksdale musicians Lee Williams, Terry "Big T" Williams, and James "Super Chikan" Johnson as personal tour guides for visitors, allowing viewers to experience Museum exhibits while learning more about the Blues artists that influenced these local musicians personally and shaped their professional careers.

Museum Director Shelley Ritter says these virtual tours were created in response to requests from many supporters who expressed an interest in visiting the Museum safely by visiting virtually, adding, "We are grateful to MAC for supporting this project which not only supports our local artists but also helps the Museum expand our storytelling. Taking a tour with these musicians and learning about those from whom they learned demonstrates the incredible power of the Blues and its perpetuity. We enjoyed working with filmmaker Coop Cooper to create these tours and hope our fans and supporters will, too."

MAC Rapid Response grants were created to support small-scale arts activities in Mississippi communities and to adapt artistic focused work in an online setting. These funds are part of an expanded version of MAC's Mini-grants program, designed to quickly assist with the urgent needs of art organizations amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

This project is supported in part by funding from the Mississippi Arts Commission, a state agency, and in part, from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. Delta Blues Museum's new virtual tours are free to the public and accessible online via the Museum's website
Whose Skip James Is This?
By Peter Guralnick/Oxford American
I first met Skip James at Dick Waterman’s apartment in Cambridge in the summer of 1965. I sought him out because, quite simply, his music had overwhelmed me: the blues that he had recorded for Paramount Records in 1931 on piano and guitar, four of whose sides had been reissued on collectors’ labels in the early ’60s, had struck me as unfathomably strange, beautiful, and profound. Then in June of 1964 the singer himself was rediscovered in a hospital in Tunica, Mississippi, and when he appeared at the Newport Folk Festival some five or six weeks later, his music was just as haunting, just as profound, his pure falsetto floated out over that festival field with all the ethereal power of the records but with a new and eerie reality. When, a year later, he was booked into Club 47 in Cambridge and I found out that he would be staying with Dick Waterman, who managed Mississippi John Hurt and Son House at the time and would very shortly take over Skip’s booking and management, too, I felt an obligation to seek him out. I’m not sure what exactly emboldened me. I didn’t know Dick, except as one of the blues elite who could hang out backstage at Newport or stride past the waiting lines at Club 47 and walk right in the door. I certainly didn’t know Skip. And at twenty-one, I was temperamentally disinclined to approach anyone outside the realm of my immediate circle of acquaintance. But I felt, not without an ironic recognition of my own foolishness and insignificance—for no other reason but my overwhelming admiration for his work, the scope of his imagination, I simply felt compelled to do it.

Thoughts about venues opening... share yours!
Hey Blues Fans!! We see some blues music venues are opening up around the country. Albeit, opening then closing then opening, etc.

Here's a recent note from a blues lover:
"I'm in the middle of Alabama about 35 miles south of Birmingham. A few places have opened up in Birmingham and my favorite place, Capitol Oyster Bar in Montgomery has opened for outdoor Sunday afternoon shows. At my age, I'm a higher risk of catching the virus. So, my choice about going out in public has been made. Thank goodness, my extensive music collection is keeping me sane.

Favorite blues memory? Jeez...Stevie Ray Vaughan on Riverboat President in New Orleans 1988 with B.B. King. San Francisco Blues Festival with Albert Collins, Charlie Musselwhite, Katie Webster in 1990. Etta James, Elvin Bishop at a JazzFest night concert 1990. Couple trips to International Blues Competition in Memphis."

We're interested in your thoughts:
- Have you attended any shows and where?
- If so, how was the vibe (i.e. joyous, awkward, crowded, etc.)
- If not, when will you feel comfortable attending?
- If you're a musician, have you performed live for an audience recently?
- If so, how was the vibe and attendance?

Email me 100 words MAX and make sure to put "VENUES OPENING" in subject line (so it doesn't get lost in my email). Tell us where in the world you're located. Feel free to send me a pic of your favorite blues music experience if you like, too.

Wishing you all good health and peace,
Michele
