Charlie Bedford :: GOOD TO GO
The notion of “Keeping The Blues Alive” and passing the torch to the next generation is preeminent in the scene today. While America gets recognition for having given birth to the genre, the blues is universal and for decades Aussies have been telling their stories too. The burgeoning roots and blues scene from the Land Down Under has produced 19-year-old blues guitarist and vocalist, Charlie Bedford, from Melbourne as an exciting candidate to step into that role.

In January of 2020 Bedford was the recipient of a distribution deal from Blue Heart Records for his sophomore album Good To Go. The 11 original tracks and one fun-loving cover are a mixture of power-positive pop and rock infused with blues and soul.

The funky “Money Junkie” offers up wisdom beyond his years, “Honey” swings back and forth and “No Rain No Flowers” has British pop influences and a message of optimism. Drummer Tim Anderson shines on the funky rocking title track “Good To Go.” There’s musical maturity on “Windy Wednesday” and Bedford’s exposure to California 70s sounds.

The dynamic “Enemy” displays Bedford’s compositional skills. Then he reminds us he’s still a teenager by rapping on “Get Rude,” and a “digital native” on garage rocker “Upgrades.” Southern Soul comes through on “Just A Little Longer” and touches of psychedelia slip into the reverb-soaked instrumental “Telephone.” Chris “Stibbo” Hanger from Melbourne jump blues combo, The Jump Cats, joins in with hot blues harp for a rollicking version of the Mink DeVille track “Steady Driver Man” taking liberties with the Bo Diddley-beat party anthem. The set closes with “Blues For John,” in memory of John Jerman, who was a pillar of the Aussie blues community.
"Money Junkie"
It’s been a minute since Blues Music Award Winner, BigLLou Johnson as released any new blues music. Not that he hasn’t been in the studio though. Au contraire, he practically lives in his own home studio where he says he tries to stay busy churning out voice overs for TV and radio spots and even doing character voices for toys. But you may know him best as the Voice Host of one of the biggest blues stations in the world, B.B. Kings Bluesville on Sirius-XM, a gig he’s had since Sirius and XM merged. He was chosen by the original and legendary Program Director, Bill Wax.
The two became great friends and it was Bill who encouraged him to record his first blues album and use local musicians from Chicago. Bill also invited him to co-host the Blues Music Awards which were broadcast on Bluesville at the time. It was in Memphis that he met the blues legend Mr. Bobby Rush who gave him the advice, “When you make a record... make sure you put your name in it so folks will remember you.” And that’s how the Blues Music Award winning album, They Call Me Big LLou, came into being. BigLLou took home the award for “Best New Artist” in 2013.

Fast forward to 2020 — America is divided and in the throngs of a pandemic, so BigLLou thought that this was as good a time as any to put pen to paper and finish the album he’d been working off and on for years. “SunShine On Yo Face” is the first release from the upcoming album, Big Man – The Legend of BigLLou, on GoldenVoice Audio Recordings. The tune is available on all streaming platforms and from his website. Portions of the proceeds from the single will benefit the Covid-19 Blues Musician Emergency Relief Fund. ...Read more about BigLLou's adventures

GRAMMY Museum® Mississippi to Host Virtual & Livestreamed Gala Honoring Bobby Rush Nov 12
(CLEVELAND, MS) - The GRAMMY Museum® Mississippi's 2020 Gala will be hosted virtually and livestreamed from the Museum in Cleveland, Mississippi, on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2020. This year's Gala will honor GRAMMY®-winning blues artist Bobby Rush with the second annual Crossroads of American Music Award. Rush will appear at the Museum's virtual ceremony to accept the award and perform. Additional performers include country music singer/songwriter Steve Azar and GRAMMY-nominated blues musician Cedric Burnside.

This year's Gala will also recognize Amy Killebrew, a teacher at Grenada Elementary School in Grenada, Miss., with the inaugural L.U.C.Y. Award.

"We're looking forward to an incredibly inspiring night of celebrating music—those who make it and those who teach it," said Emily Havens, Executive Director of GRAMMY Museum Mississippi. "We couldn't be more thrilled to honor a legendary artist such as Bobby Rush with our second annual Crossroads of American Music Award, and we are excited to celebrate Mrs. Amy Killebrew as the first-ever recipient of our L.U.C.Y. Award. With an amazing performance lineup, it's going to be a night to remember, and one that will help us continue to provide music education experiences and opportunities for the young people
of Mississippi and beyond."

“It’s such an honor to receive the Crossroads of American Music Award from the GRAMMY Museum Mississippi,” said Rush. “I can’t thank them enough and can’t find words to say how much I appreciate the recognition for me as a bluesman and a Black bluesman. I‘m so thankful to have someone recognize what I have done and am doing, and during my lifetime while I can still enjoy it, am able to go out and perform, and am still mentally and physically with it. Most of the time people get recognized when they can’t do anything. It’s not a past tense for me. I’m still doing what I do and loving what I do.”

Greetings from Patty, Blues Foundation President/CEO
(MEMPHIS, TN) - If we are fortunate, there are times in our lives when we experience a confluence of our avocation and our vocation. Becoming the new President of The Blues Foundation offers me a treasured opportunity to merge my passion for the preservation and celebration of African American cultural resources such as blues music with my professional expertise as a leader of non-profit organizations.

Realizing the ambitious mission of The Blues Foundation and our shared vision of the future will require the energetic engagement of the entire blues community. I have appreciated the warm welcome I have received from musicians, blues societies from across the globe, music scholars, industry professionals and fans. I look forward to partnering with all of you as we continue to preserve the heritage of the blues, expand appreciation of the genre, and support the artists who keep the music alive.

I am keenly aware that I am joining The Blues Foundation at a critical moment. The blues community is not isolated from the racial reckoning that has roiled our nation. Together, I hope we will deepen our knowledge of the authentic history of the blues and early blues artists, grow and diversify the audiences who experience our live performances, ensure equity in the opportunities offered to musicians of all backgrounds, and encourage the young artists who will fuel the genre’s ongoing evolution. Our timely response to these and other difficult issues will ensure that The Blues Foundation remains a trusted and relevant resource. The work ahead will be especially challenging as we attempt to deal with the far-reaching consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Then mark your calendars for the MO Blues Association Holiday Blues Blast Dec 5th at the Capital Bluffs Event Center, 1616 Oilwell Rd Suite B, in Jefferson City from 5-10pm.

Thoughts about venues opening... share yours!
Hey Blues Fans!! We see some blues music venues are opening up around the country. Albeit, opening then closing then opening, etc.
We're interested in your thoughts:
- Have you attended any shows and where?
- If so, how was the vibe (i.e. joyous, awkward, crowded, etc.)
- If not, when will you feel comfortable attending?
- If you're a musician, have you performed live for an audience recently?
- If so, how was the vibe and attendance?
Email me 100 words MAX and make sure to put "VENUES OPENING" in subject line (so it doesn't get lost in my email). Tell us where in the world you're located. Feel free to send me a pic of your favorite blues music experience if you like, too.
Wishing you all good health and peace,
