Happy Holidays
From The President's Desk
Greetings,

Hoping all is well with you and your families.
As I got the details of the Teacher Town Hall, I’m a little annoyed with the district and the about face on returning in January (without a date).  Clearly the superintendent has forgotten what she said initially in concurring with the CDC and 100 per 100,000 cases. Now it’s about the positivity rate of less than 10%, which would be based on the number of people who took the test.  We all know a number of people who haven’t taken the Covid-19 test.  I would suggest that these people are A-symptomatic and might not ever get the virus but, could give it to you. The county will provide face mask for teachers who don’t have their own.
I received this today from the Superintendent about returning, “It is (returning) optional for students.  Teachers are expected to return, but can work with HR and principals on a variety of options.”  What does that mean?  I would suggest to those of you who have underlying conditions that you confer with your physicians as soon as possible.  Don’t wait until it’s time to return.  I think it might be time to flood the Superintendent and the Board with emails and telephone calls with our concerns.  Apparently, Ms. Watson-Harris has been talking with someone who doesn’t have our best interest at heart.
As we turn the corner on 2020, my wish is for peace, joy, and a sense of understanding.  We’ve come a long way this year and I’m so very proud of the job you’ve done, however; we have a longer way to go.
I’m thankful for each one of you and for all that you do for the students in the DeKalb County School District
May your days be merry and bright! Happy Holidays, enjoy your time off, and please be safe.

In Solidarity
Deborah
Senate Runoff Elections
Control of the United States Senate comes down to the dual runoff elections in Georgia. Senators David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler failed to gain 50% in the general election and face GAE Endorsed pro-public education candidates Jon Ossoff and Reverend Raphael Warnock in January 5, 2021 runoff. If you want to vote by mail, there's still time to request your ballot by visiting ballotrequest.sos.ga.gov or contacting your local board of elections for an application. Early voting has also begun in Georgia. Check with your county for locations. If you have a mail ballot, get it returned as soon as possible. Drop boxes are available for every county. Verify the status of your application by visiting Georgia's My Voter Page
