Florida's Blues on Reid Saturday, April 10
(PORT ST. JOE, FL) - The 2021 Blues on Reid is happening this Saturday, April 10, 2021 from noon-7pm on Reid Avenue in downtown Port St. Joe, Florida. This free community event is brought to you by the Gulf County Chamber of Commerce.

Headlining from 5:30-7pm is power trio the Frank Jones Band who explore the boundaries between blues, rock, jazz, and soul with a dynamic mash of hard-hitting grooves, blistering guitar riffs and soulful melodies. The group features southern soul vocalist and guitarist Frank Jones who's influences range from Albert Collins, B.B. King, Albert King, The Funky Meters, Clarence Carter and Ray Charles all the way to Sly and the Family Stone, The Beatles, Edgar Winter and more.

Garnet and Soul are an eclectic 5-piece band of funk-craving soul monsters who have come together to make the world a better, funkier, place.

Alabama harmonica player John Bull takes his blues all over the southeast but is most at home in the real-deal Juke joints of Alabama and Mississippi.

Brett Waters and The Pool Boys are a powerhouse group with the common love of soul, blues, honkytonk, and funk. Their musical influences include Joe Cocker, Eric Clapton, Freddie King, as well as honky-tonk country tunes.

Kelly Hundley and the Healers will be opening the 2021 Blues on Reid at 1pm with their brand of hot-rockin' Blues fronted by singer/guitarist Kelly Hundley. Their influences include Eric Clapton, Albert King, B.B. King and Robert Johnson.
Thurs April 8th LRBC "Driftin' & Driftin'" Happy Hour Episode 18 with Kenny Neal & Rev. Billy C. Wirtz Live
Join us for Driftin' & Driftin' Episode #18 with Kenny Neal and Rev. Billy C. Wirtz! Thursday, April 8, 2021, 3pm (PDT), 5pm (CDT), 6pm (EDT) on Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise (LRBC) Facebook Live and the LRBC Youtube channel.

One of the strongest modern proponents of Baton Rouge swamp blues, Kenny Neal is a second-generation southern Louisiana bluesman who is cognizant of the region’s venerable blues tradition and imaginative enough to steer it in fresh directions. Neal was born on October 14, 1957 in New Orleans. His dad, harpist Raful Neal, was a Baton Rouge blues mainstay whose pals included Buddy Guy and Slim Harpo (the latter gave three-year-old Kenny his first harmonica). At age 13, Neal was playing in his father’s band, and at 17, landed a job playing bass for Buddy Guy.

Consider a donation to help prep unreleased recordings of many Blues giants
Happy Arizona Gives Day! Please consider a donation to Southwest Musical Arts Foundation. These are very tough times and we realize that many of you will not have the resources to donate. But if you do have the means, every bit of your donation will go towards preparation of the next batch of Vaults recordings. We have master tapes from over 100 sessions recorded over three decades that we feel need to be released. Many of the artists that we documented are no longer with us.

We have been transferring numerous sessions from various formats (tape and hard drive) to ProTools format. We will be releasing batches of 3 or 4 albums annually if we can afford to do this. We are looking at unreleased material by Louisiana Red, Pinetop Perkins, Luther Tucker, Smokey Wilson, Robert Lockwood, Eddie Kirkland, Big Jack Johnson, Robert Bilbo Walker, Honeyboy Edwards, Carol Fran, Sam Lay, Magic Slim and much more! But all of this involves attention to detail as well as the huge expense of studio time.

Each $100 donation brings us about an hour and a half of studio time so you can imagine how that adds up. If you do have the means a desire for a donation, please either send by PayPal or mail to Southwest Musical Arts P.O. Box 3310 Scottsdale, AZ 85271. Please make the check out to Southwest Musical Arts Foundation.

Thank you to everyone for all the support! Look for many more future volumes from the Vaults Series!

John Németh :: STRONGER THAN STRONG
Many an artist dreams of making a pilgrimage to the source of their inspiration and to commune with the muse. Idaho born John Németh made that trek moving to Memphis from the West coast in 2013, entrenching himself in the city’s rich and historic musical scene. The 2-time Blues Music Award (BMA) winner and multi-BMA nominee soon fell in with producer Scott Bomar, who leads the Memphis soul band, The Bo-Keys, and is the owner and operator of the acclaimed Electrophonic Recording Studios, to create the album of soul classic Memphis Grease in 2014.

Németh return to Electrophonic in December of 2019 with his seasoned road band of young gun players, The Blue Dreamers, featuring 19-year-old guitar phenom from Philadelphia, John Hay, drummer Danny Banks, and Matt Wilson on bass for a rough and rowdy, Southern swamp roots session resulting in his 10th album, 2021 BMA nominated Stronger Than Strong. The dozen tracks feature soaring soul-blues tenor and hot blues harp playing that has garnered Németh a loyal fan base and international attention for over 20 years. Bomar capitalized on the chemistry of Németh’s small combo, capturing the intimate, live off the floor, definitely retro sound.

The McKee Brothers :: A TIME LIKE THIS
A Time Like This, the 3rd release from The McKee Brothers, once again features fine L.A. and Michigan musicians and spotlights Denis McKee’s ongoing collaboration with prolific songwriter and amazing pianist Bobby West, this time creating 16 lyrically interesting and seriously funky originals. It is produced by multi-instrumentalist Denis McKee, who is also featured on lead vocals, backed by supremely soulful vocalist Maxayn Lewis (Ike & Tina Turner, Maxayn). The rhythm section includes A-list L.A. musicians Bobby Watson (Rufus Thomas, Billy Preston, Michael Jackson) on bass, with drummers Steve Stephens (Patti Austin, Glen Hughes) and Vincent Fosset Jr. (Kirk Fletcher, Janiva Magness). The songs feature great horn arrangements by Lee Thornburg (Supertramp, Etta James, TOP, Joe Bonamassa), with Lee on brass and Positone recording artist Doug Webb (Stanley Clark, Freddie Hubbard, Rod Stewart) on reeds. Veteran bluesmen Larry McCray and Joey Delgado add inspired guitar to several tracks, with Denis contributing dynamic guitar solos on "Realize," "The Rain," and "A Scene From Sunday."

Like on the critically acclaimed Enjoy It While You Can (2016) and Moon Over Montgomery (2017) albums, the McKee Brothers continue to explore a sophisticated blend of horn-driven blues, soul, gospel, and rock.

Bandleader, producer, guitarist Denis McKee (King Floyd, Linda Hopkins, Barbara Morrison, HB Barnum) moved to L.A. from Lansing in 1988 to attend the acclaimed Dick Grove School of Music, graduating from the Guitar Program. He has recently fronted McKee Brothers gigs at clubs in LA, Ann Arbor, and Lansing, and at larger venues including the Michigan Theater in Jackson and the Long Beach Bayou Festival.

What's Happening Out There?
Thoughts about venues opening or not... share yours!
Hey Blues Fans!! Some blues music venues are opening up around the country. Albeit, opening then closing. What are your thoughts and/or experiences?

We're interested in your thoughts:
- Have you attended or performed any live shows since the pandemic and where?
- If so, how was the vibe (i.e. joyous, awkward, attendance, etc.)
- If not, when will you feel comfortable attending?

Email me 100 words MAX and make sure to put "VENUES OPENING" in subject line (so it doesn't get lost in my email). Tell us where in the world you're located. Send me a pic of this blues music experience if you like, too.

Wishing you all good health and peace,
Michele

Holidays, Birthdays and... Just In Case
"Hard times ain't nothing that music won't help heal..."

Birthdays upcoming of note:
April 8 “Little Ed” Williams (1955); April 9 Mance Lipscomb (1895–1976); April 10 John Brim (1922–2003) Rosco Gordon (April 10, 1928 – July 11, 2002) ), Shemekia Copeland (1979); April 11 Luther "Guitar Jr." Johnson (1939); April 12 "Hound Dog" Taylor (1915-1975); April 15 Tommy Castro (1955), Bessie Smith (1894-1937); April 16 Sean Costello (pictured here 1979-2008); April 18 Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown (1924-2005), Alexis Korner (1928–1984); April 21-Clara Ward (1924-1973); April 22-George "Harmonica" Smith (1924-1983), Bullmoose Jackson (1919-1989); April 23-Charles "Cow Cow" Davenport (1894-1955)

Just in Case: April 9 is "National Name Yourself Day"... a day to celebrate reinvention by trying on a new name for size. Studies show there’s a link between someone’s name and their personalities. Maybe pick a bluesy nickname for yourself if you're feeling it. Or you can Google "What's Your Blues Name" and use your initials and end up with something like ... Jailhouse Bones Parker... hummm. Better than one your big sister gave you when you were a kid like Shelly The Belly Full of Jelly for instance. Nah, pick your own cool name and work it! .
