The 2022 International Blues Challenge is coming right up Jan 18-22
(MEMPHIS, TN) – The Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge (IBC) is back for 2022 and will happen January 18-22 on Beale Street in Memphis, Tennessee. Along with the Beale Street competitions and finals, the event includes live workshops and seminars, Youth and International Showcases and the Keeping The Blues Alive (KBA) Awards Ceremony & Brunch. Time to get your passes now!

The IBC represents the worldwide search for those blues bands and solo/duo blues performers ready for the international stage, yet just needing that extra big break. Each affiliated Blues Society of The Blues Foundation has the right to send a band and solo/duo musician(s) to represent its organization at the IBC.

The IBC is judged by blues professionals from across the world who have years of experience in listening to, producing, and creating blues music. The Blues Foundation has established a set of criteria by which all competing musicians are evaluated throughout the five days of the IBC.

Affiliated Blues Societies are required to stage a live regional preliminary IBC competition, with the winner of that event representing the organization in the International Blues Challenge held annually in Memphis, TN along historic Beale Street. While affiliated Blues Societies are encouraged to follow The Blues Foundation’s structure and rules during their local challenges, each organization is free to structure its preliminary rounds as it sees fit, as long as a true challenge between multiple musicians takes place resulting in winners.

Alligator Records’ 50th Anniversary Year Culminates with Major International Recognition
Alligator Records founder and president Bruce Iglauer was honored on December 17 with the French Charles Cros Academy "In Honorem" Award.

According to the Académie Charles Cros (ACC), "Members of the Jazz and Blues and Soul commissions have unanimously agreed to award this distinction to Bruce Iglauer, founder of Alligator Records, the independent label which has carried the colors of the blues high for 50 years, on the occasion of the release of 50 Years of Genuine Houserockin' Music.”

"The ACC has awarded prizes annually since 1948 and is placed under the high patronage of the President of the Republic. Each year, in addition to the President of the Republic's award, it also gives "In Honorem" awards to artists for their entire career, or to personalities for the importance of their work."Iglauer is thrilled to receive this recognition, saying. "I am extremely honored to have Alligator Records receive this award. I accept it in the name of all the Alligator artists, from Hound Dog Taylor in 1971 to Christone "Kingfish" Ingram today, who have lived the blues and carried the tradition forward."

On June 18, 2021, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot declared "Alligator Records Day" throughout the city via official proclamation. This is the same day Alligator Records-50 Years Of Genuine Houserockin' Music (a 2-LP or 3-CD set) was released. On September 18, 2021, the Mayor declared "Bruce Iglauer Day" across the city.

Alligator Records was born in 1971, when 23-year-old blues fan Bruce Iglauer spent his savings to record and release a record by his favorite Chicago blues band, Hound Dog Taylor & The HouseRockers. He created Alligator Records to release that one LP. Today, Alligator boasts a catalog of over 350 titles, many of which are renowned, award-winning, time-tested classics of the genre.
Deep Dives: Strachwitz Video Archive
Chris Strachwitz spent many years taking pictures of the people, places and events that he was fortunate to be part of.  In the 1980’s Chris also started taking more home movies and videos of concerts, parties, talks, and other behind-the-scenes activities. We have begun preserving over 700 hours of these videos. Our Deep Dive in December debuted four new videos across a broad range of styles.

The Arhoolie Foundation is rooted in the life's work of its founder Chris Strachwitz and his acclaimed independent label Arhoolie Records. Our mission is to document, preserve, and celebrate blues, Cajun, zydeco, gospel, jazz, Tejano/Norteño, old-time, and other tradition-based styles of music through archival preservation, live performance, films, community and educational outreach, exhibits, and direct support to artists.

Take a deep dive into the Strachwitz video archive.

Just in case: December 23 is "Festivus" Festivus is perfect for those who don’t have a traditional holiday to celebrate. Although it sounds paradoxical, its purpose makes a lot of sense. Not everyone has a major holiday to celebrate like Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa. This holiday gives many people a non-denominational and non-commercial holiday to call their own. Festivus is for everybody!
December 24 is "National Short Film Day"... there are some amazing short films about many Blues artists and scenarios. There's St. Louis BluesTwo Trains Runnin', Shake Sister Shake, etc. Do a Google and/or YouTube search and there's always an interesting list of blues films and documentaries featured at the annual Clarksdale Film Festival.
