Atlanta ~ Vendors, attendees upset over BeReggae fest cancellation
A usually well-attended event in Atlanta became a well-attended disappointment Sunday when it was apparently canceled the night before. Hundreds of people and many vendors still showed up to Piedmont Park for the BeReggae Music and Arts Festival because they said they had no idea and ultimately felt "bamboozled."

Organizers of the BeREGGAE Music and Arts festival say they canceled the concert Sunday for safety concerns, but hundreds still showed up because they had no idea it had been nixed.

Whitehouse Chicken and Fish staff packed up their booth in Piedmont Park Sunday afternoon after not getting the business they hoped for from the BeREGGAE festival.

"Each booth costs about $2-3,000…so we out about $6,000, plus the $2,000 I had to pay to get in the gate, and the $3,000 worth of food we paid for that we're going to have to throw away," said Whitehouse owner Robert White. He says the only reason he and his team even showed up was because they didn’t get the memo.

the organizer said strong storms the day before left the park soaked, and didn’t want people slipping and falling. The storms even caused some trees to come down in Piedmont Park. He claims he didn’t want anyone to get hurt.

"I didn't feel good with bringing people out here and gathering thousands of people out here," Barnes said.

Organizers emailed vendors letting them know about the cancelation, but it was sent in the middle of the night and many didn’t see it.

Despite the cancellation, hundreds of concertgoers still gathered. They didn't hear about the scratch either.

Wilmington, DE ~ Saturday, September 23 - 29th Annual Peoples Festival Tribute To Bob Marley
People's Festival29th Annual Festival in Tubman-Garrett Riverfront Park - Something for Everyone! One of the longest running, most anticipated events of Delaware’s festival season is readying for 2023 with new features, great food, great crafts, and as always, great music spreading Bob Marley’s positive message of Unity, One Love and Equal Rights.

For 29 years, the “People’s Festival Tribute to Bob Marley” has highlighted the significance of Marley’s ties to the city of Wilmington, where he lived, worked, played, and wrote some of his iconic songs sharing his experience of the time spent here.

Marley came to Wilmington in 1968 to be close to his mother. While there, Marley earned money to launch his career, working at two of Delaware’s largest and most well-known companies, DuPont, and Chrysler.

In 1995, Marley’s close friends Ibis and Genny Pitts brought to life a vision by Marley’s mother (Cedella Marley Booker) that Wilmington be the site of a tribute to her son, who had passed away in 1981.

The “One Love Revival,” set to lift the vibration of the city, is scheduled Sept. 23, 2023. This year will feature several musical genres, including Soca, Calypso, a tribute to 50 years of Hip-Hop, and of course, lots of Reggae music. International artist Reemah from St. Croix is slated to appear, along with local up and coming Superstars and regional bands.

International food court, arts, and crafts from around the world, a healing garden, children’s village, bamboo rain hut, a state-of-the-art beer garden and lots more surprises! VIP area featuring a taste of local restaurants, breweries and other highlights including a hookah and cigar lounge, photo booth and much more!

Bob Marley built a musical career which spanned the globe and gained him worldwide iconic status. He received many awards, including a post humous Grammy Lifetime achievement award in 2001. His positive music continues to grow in popularity with new generations, bringing him a success greater than he experienced in his lifetime. His connection to Wilmington
continues to be documented in books, songs and on the big screen. ‘MARLEY’ the movie, released in 2012, includes an interview with his good friend and festival founder Ibis Pitts.

Pittsburgh reggae festival to support Black first-time homeowners
The Piatt Family Foundation’s Rock, Reggae, and Relief Festival takes place on Forbes Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh this weekend, promising music and a charitable cause to attendants.
The festival lineup includes local and national rock and reggae bands Sublime with Rome, Slightly Stoopid, Tropidelic, Roots of Creation, Keystone Vibe, and Fubar.

The “relief” part of this year’s festival benefits Catapult Greater Pittsburgh.

This is the 6th annual Rock, Reggae, and Relief in Pittsburgh. Last year’s festival brought $50,000 to Café Momentum, a restaurant that employs teens involved in the justice system. This year the Piatt Foundation wanted to help an organization even more aligned with their own mission, according to administrative director Molly Onufer.

“We're a real estate company,” Onufer explained. “So we really wanted to do something that focused on real estate and our belief that everyone in Pittsburgh deserves to own a home.”
Catapult Greater Pittsburgh is an organization that helps systematically disadvantaged Black communities build generational wealth and financial security. Executive director Tammy Thompson says they do this through two main vehicles: first time homeownership and entrepreneurship.
“Catapult is just like its title,” Thompson added. “We want to catapult people into the next level of their lives. And sometimes people just need a little bit of help, just a little bit of support to reach those goals.”

Catapult provides various services like trauma-informed financial counseling and group education. The funds from the festival, however, will support their Next Steps Fund. Love stories about arts and culture? Sign up for our newsletter and we'll send you Pittsburgh's top news, every weekday morning. The Next Steps Fund is a program that helps eligible, Black, first-time homeowners pay for down payments or closing costs in Allegheny County.

“Those folks who have worked really, really hard, who have attended our workshops and have learned and have done the work to prepare themselves to be homeowners, but just are struggling to come up with $5,000 or $7,000 for a down payment and closing costs. We don't think that's enough of a reason for people to miss out on the opportunity of homeownership,” Thompson said.
The organization helped 42 Pittsburgh families buy homes between 2021 and 2022.

“People are not sitting around at home eating bon bons with their feet up, waiting on someone to take care of them,” said Thompson. “The people that we work with are hard working people who have a dream for themselves and their families, and sometimes they just need a little bit of help to get there.”
