The Challenge Is On!
This Sunday, 8/3/25
at George's Majestic in Fayetteville - Tix $15
Reserved Tables $25
Every year, the Ozark Blues Society of NW Arkansas sends bands and solo/duo artists to Memphis to compete in the International Blues Challenge. The first step to the Memphis competition is our local Challenge here in NWA. This year our competitors are Batterton & Edwards, Jimmy Stengel, The Procrastinators, and the R.D. Olson Blues Band.

Your attendance at the Challenge helps raise funds to send both a band and a solo/duo act to Memphis, with rooms paid and a daily stipend for food, etc. Let's get our artists there to represent us here in NWA. Let's give them the opportunity to meet record execs, festival bookers, and many others who can help their music careers! Tickets at the door are $15. Here's where to buy tix in advance -- LINK TO ONLINE TIX; CALL GEORGE'S TO RESERVE TABLE at (479) 527-6618.

SON SEALS

Frank “Son” Seals was born on August 13, 1942, in Osceola, Arkans
as, a small town nestled in the Mississippi Delta. He grew up surrounded by music. His father, Jim Seals, owned the Dipsy Doodle Club, a local juke joint that hosted some of the biggest names in blues and R&B, including B.B. King, Albert King, and Sonny Boy Williamson II. This early exposure gave Son a front-row seat to the legends of the genre and laid the
 foundation for his musical journey.

By the time he was 13, Seals was playing drums professionally. But it wasn’t long before he picked up the guitar, inspired by the fiery playing of artists like Guitar Slim and Albert King. His guitar playing would later be characterized by a biting tone and emotionally charged phrasing—traits that became his signature style.
Community Events
Come join in to make some noise, dance, and have a great evening in Basin Spring Park. Join in the fun! Bring a drum or anything else that makes noise and join the drum circle with Angelo and his troupe of drummers and dancers.

The Fayetteville Farmers Market often features musicians on the street, and always offers great locally grown produce and street parties. On Saturday, August 2nd, there's the Watermelon Festival. Will they have a melon tossing contest? Gotta go to find out!

Enjoy Some Live Blues Music

Ideally, the best ways to celebrate International Blues Music Day would be to check out some live Blues bands in concert in the area. See the venue and band links in this newsletter's LIVE MUSIC IN NWA section below.

Listen to Blues Music Online

Those who are newer to the idea of Blues music may want to check out the range of this style of music online so they can figure out which artists are their favorites. Hop onto Apple Music, Spotify, or another online music platform and cue up a range of different artists in honor of International Blues Music Day. Get started with a few of these titles:
  • I’d Rather Go Blind by Etta James (1967)
  • Hoochie Coochie Man by Muddy Waters (1954)
  • The Thrill is Gone by B.B. King (1969)
  • Me and the Devil Blues by Robert Johnson (1937)
YouTube also has a fantastic selection of Blues videos, from the legends of our past, all the way to the contemporary artists of today. Here's a compilation of various legends from the past...
And here's a video of a contemporary artist --
