Greetings from your Editor...
Telling a Story...

The 4th Friday in September is set aside to honor and celebrate Native Americans, the first Americans to live in the U.S. Still commonly referred to as American Indians, the term "Native Americans" has been used in recent years as a sign of respect and recognition that they were indeed the first people to populate America. By the time the first explorers and settlers arrived from Europe, Native Americans had populated the entire North American continent.

In light of this day I set to search out Native American blues artists and found some truly amazing artists, stories and songs. For this week's featured video I choose the artist Pura Fé performing a beautiful, moving song about a family member who was killed by the Klu Klux Klan. Hard to choose from this artist's selections as I'm now listening to a video of her and band performing songs from her CD, "Full Moon Rising." Wow!

Lots of Birthday's of Note: Sept 28 Koko Taylor (1935) and C.J. Chenier (1957); Sept 29 Jerry Lee Lewis (1935); Sept 30 Z.Z. Hill; Oct 1 Albert Collins (1932) and George "Wild Child" Butler (1936); Oct 3 Stevie Ray Vaughan (1954), Billy Branch (1951), Keb' Mo' (1951) and Deborah Coleman (1956); Oct 4 Duke Robillard (1948) and Betsie Brown (Blind Raccoon); Oct 5 Roy Book Binder (1943) and Rick Estrin (1949); Oct 6 Cheryl O'Grady Yearnshaw (good friend and BFG Sales Director); Oct 9 O.V. Wright (1939).

Talk to ya next week! Your ever-grateful editor,

Correction: In last week's letter I mentioned the fine folks in the DME room at Sin City and wanted to clarify that Michael Frank heads up the Honeyboy Edwards Scholarship Fund.

CD & DVD Releases
Johnny Rawls :: REMEMBERING O.V.
EL PASO, TX – Catfood Records announces an October 15 release date for Remembering O.V., the new CD from Blues Music Award-winning singer Johnny Rawls that pays tribute to his late friend and mentor, O.V. Wright. Blues Hall of Fame singer Otis Clay is a special guest on three tracks of the album, which features nine songs associated with Wright and an original cut, “Blaze of Glory,” that closes the album in rousing fashion.

Remembering O.V. was produced by Johnny Rawls and recorded at Sonic Ranch Studios in Tornillo, Texas. It was mixed by Jim Gaines at Bessie Blue Studio in Stantonville, Tennessee, and mastered by Brad Blackwood at Euphonic Masters in Memphis. Read all about it here

Shawn Holt & The Teardrops :: DADDY TOLD ME
After over twenty years and ten releases as Magic Slim's label, Blind Pig Records is very proud to announce the debut recording by Shawn Holt & the Teardrops, Daddy Told Me. Shawn's booming vocal presence is more than a little reminiscent of his father's, and his guitar playing while similar to Slim's exhibits a broader mix of classic and contemporary influences.

Combining a couple of his Dad's songs and other songs associated with him with five of his own originals, Shawn shows himself more than capable of leading the Teardrops into a new era. On two songs, the band is joined by John Primer, a former Teardrop and now a blues luminary in his own right.

The blues world mourned the passing of Magic Slim this past spring, and now the fall is bringing a new recording showcasing the passing of the torch from one generation to the next, "Daddy Told Me."

Robert Johnson’s Family Fights in Court Over Photo Rights

New York Times/Arts Beat - There are only two known photographs of the great Delta bluesman Robert Johnson, whose songs like “Cross Road Blues” and “I Believe I’ll Dust My Broom” are classics. One is a studio shot of him in a wide-lapeled suit and a slick fedora, hands resting on the strings of a flat-top guitar; the other shows Mr. Johnson in a photo booth, a cigarette hanging from his lips as he fingers a chord.

The fate of those photos, which have become extremely valuable as Mr. Johnson’s posthumous fame has grown, now rests with the Mississippi Supreme Court.
