Blues Festival Guide
Jan 2, 2014
Vol 9/Issue 1
TABLE  OF  CONTENTS
Greetings from your Editor...
And the Blues rolls on...
What comes sneaking up on you like a locomotive one day then quietly glides into the sunset the next? Yep, the end of the year. Quick, if you haven't already, get some paper and make a list of your resolutions. It could be fun, not just, "I'm going to quit eating everything in sight," or "I'm going to drive the speed limit even though everyone else is driving 80." Try making a wish list of things that aren't necessarily correcting bad habits (although it doesn't hurt to aim for a few). Maybe make a plan to go to that festival you've always wanted to go to or see that one particular artist that moves you or even support a music related cause. Or at least, as Blues Lovers United of San Diego President Janine Harty put it, "...let's all resolve to get out and support even MORE live music!"

The new year, like Spring, always seems to be a time of rebirth and a time to turn some things around and start with a fresh slate. Whatever you do, enjoy yourselves and bask in the fact that we always have music to soothe or ignite our souls. Here's to an amazing year full of music, laughter, friends, revelations, relaxation and thrills with few spills.

Blues Birthdays of Note: Jan 2 Little Smokey Smothers (1939), Rubin “Rube” Lacy (1901); Jan 5 Johnny Adams (1932), Wilbert Harrison (1929), Sam Phillips (1923 founder of Sun Records); Jan 6 Kim Wilson (1951); Jan 8 Elvis Presley (1935), Tampa Red (1904), Bill Graham (1931 promoter at the legendary Filmore); Jan 9 Barbara Carr (1941); Jan 10 Eddy "The Chief" Clearwater (1935), Sam Chatmon (1897), Jerry Wexler (1914 founder of Atlantic Records).

Tinsley Ellis :: MIDNIGHT BLUE
The name of his former band, the Heartfixers, hints as to what makes Tinsley Ellis a legend among his second generation postwar fellow blues artists. The passionate singer, consummate songwriter and hellfire guitarist delves deeper into the affairs of the heart through the “hard blues,” in John Lee Hooker’s memorable term. Having long ago absorbed the influences of B.B. and Freddie King, as well as British blues guitarists, Ellis commands a signature style of scalding, explosive power as heard to stunning effect on Midnight Blue.

Ten emotionally searing originals from Ellis with Kevin McKendree (keyboards), Lynn Williams (drums) and Ted Pecchio (bass) offer an unforgettable late night journey out of the heart of darkness.

Risque Blues

When is a lemon not a lemon? If you need a little sugar in your bowl, is that what you REALLY need? Or perhaps what's needed is some lead in your pencil. Is it true your record really is a big ten inches? Or is it your cream pie that's nice and tight? For the answers to these questions: we turn to the blues.
