Vol 9/Issue 6
TABLE  OF  CONTENTS
Greetings from your Editor...
Horsing around...

Chinese New year 2014 (Jan 31 through the 15 day of the 1st Lunar month) is The Year of The Horse. Legend has is that Buddha announced those born in horse years are said to be cheerful, skillful with money, perceptive, witty, talented and good with their hands. Rembrandt, Aretha Franklin, Chopin and President Theodore Roosevelt are among those born in the year of the horse. A lantern festival is held on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month.

Certainly these few mentioned are talented in their own right. Aretha fits our demographic most here. Among many others, she co-wrote "Think," somewhat of a feminist anthem and her seventh Top 10 hit in the US. "I ain't no psychiatrist, I ain't no doctor with degrees. It don't take too much high IQ's to see what you're doing to me."

Speaking of thinking and horses, Blind Lemon Jefferson once lamented, "Go get my black horse and saddle up my grey mare. I'm going off to my good girl, she's in the world somewhere..." (Black Horse Blues)

Here's a reassuring quote: "If one is lucky, a solitary fantasy can totally transform one million realities." - Maya Angelou (The Heart of a Woman)

Birthdays of Note: Feb 6 Bob Marley (1945). Feb 7 Earl King (1934), King Curtis (1934), Feb 8 Alonzo "Lonnie" Johnson (1889), Floyd Dixon (1929), Eddie "Guitar" Burns (1928), Feb 9 Johnny Heartsman (1937), Feb 10 Alton Jay "Rockin' Dopsie" Rubin (1932), Feb 11 Josh White (1908), Phillip Walker (1937), Little Johnny Taylor (1943), Otis Clay (1942), Feb 12 Pink Anderson (1900), Big John Wrencher (1923). Feb 14 Magic Sam (1937).

CD & DVD Releases
 Bernie Pearl :: TAKE YOUR TIME
You’ll find traditions and departures on Take Your Time, the new CD by Bernie Pearl. This CD represents the life-long commitment of Los Angeles-born, Long Beach-based guitarist Bernie Pearl to the traditions of the blues guitar. His playing prompted one critic to comment, "Bernie's the best we have and probably the best pure blues guy period." But Take Your Time also represents some departures. One of them is Bernie’s inclusion of Jazz-Blues diva, Barbara Morrison on three vocal duets. The two met while working on an all African-American casting of Federico Garcia Lorca’s Yerma in 1981. They soon discovered their mutual friendship with sax legend Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson and had spoken often since about recording together. Read all about it here...

Eric Jerardi :: EVERYBODY'S WAITING
Everybody's Waiting marks a milestone, seventh national release for Eric Jerardi. Produced and recorded by Grammy award winner David Z (Prince, Fine Young Cannibals, Johnny Lang, Etta James) who said it best: "I've watched Eric grow over the years to be a serious contender who has truly established himself.” The Eric Jerardi Band along with Budweiser launched a five city CD release party in Ohio (Dayton, Columbus, Cincinnati, Toledo and Cleveland) to kick off the new CD, with a new video premiering as well.

The band will continue touring the rest of 2014 across the United States and is looking for a european tour to jump on. Everybody's Waiting has several bonafide hits and any lover of blues/rock will enjoy it. The band has produced an excellent blend of music and lyrics that have exceeded all expectations.

Annika Chambers :: MAKING MY MARK
Montrose Records announces the signing of Houston-based blues/soul singer Annika Chambers and release of her debut album, Making My Mark. On the new CD, Annika (pronounced “Ann-NEE-Ka”), is backed by an aggregation dubbed “The Houston All-Stars,” well-named because it boasts the talents of many Grammy winners and nominees. Heading that list is bassist Larry Fulcher, who co-produced Making My Mark along with Montrose Records owner/engineer Richard Cagle. Fulcher is a two-time Grammy winner for his work with Taj Mahal on the albums “Shoutin’ in Key” and “Senor Blues,” and has appeared on 10 of Taj’s albums. Read all about it here...
