Who says it is all downhill after 50? Society is changing and thanks to education, millions of baby boomers are reaching retirement age with more information on how to age well. Aging, while inevitable, no longer relegates elders to a rocking chair on the porch. Every year around the world, Active Aging Week celebrates the wisdom and possibilities of life's third chapter. Western North Carolina's participation in Active Aging Week is a shining example of how health, wisdom, and pleasure can combine to benefit everyone, because we are all aging!
The YMCA's annual FIT AFTER 50 day is the kickoff event for Active Aging week 2014 and will be held at the WOODFIN YMCA on Saturday, September 20 from 12 noon - 4 pm. Lectures begin at 11:00 am and 12:00 noon. Activities begin with ballroom dancing demos, cornhole, pickleball, and pick up volleyball. The musical lineup features the Rock Academy's THE LOWDOWN band featuring Ron Shimberg and The Asheville Music School Faculty Alumni, featuring music from the swing era to disco. Aerobics for the brain games, tie dye T-shirt making and contest, flu vaccines, free health screenings, glucose and cholesterol testing, massages, and more round out the day. For more information about FIT AFTER 50 day, contact the WOODFIN YMCA at 505-3990 or Community Wellness Manager, Diane Saccone at dsaccone@ymcawnc.org |

New Y leadership changes announced
|
The Asheville and Woodfin YMCAs will begin a transition to use resources and leadership to form a more streamlined approach to serving the community. A new North District consisting of the Asheville and Woodfin Ys has been created and a new corporate resource is being added to support centralized purchasing, vendor management, and risk management. This transition will provide more leadership support to the Woodfin Center and allow for us as an association to grow together. We would like to welcome our new North District Executive Community Director, Jennifer Murphy to the Woodfin YMCA. Jennifer began her career with the YMCA of WNC in 2003 working through our Community Development Programs at the Asheville YMCA. In 2005, she began serving as the Director of Community Development representing all the YMCAs of WNC, and was instrumental in starting the 21stCentury Community Learning Center Programs which provide subsidized afterschool education support services to 3 middle schools in Buncombe County and serve over 175 kids each year. Beginning in 2009, Jennifer served as the Associate Executive Director for the Reuter Family YMCA developing an accomplished team and strengthening the operations of the Reuter Y. In May of 2013, Jennifer took on the role of Executive Community Direction for the Downtown Asheville YMCA. Jennifer has recently accepted the position of North District Executive Director and will work with both the Asheville and Woodfin YMCAs to create a consistent and positive member experience. Jennifer and her husband, Kyle, have been married for 7 years and live in the West Asheville community. Jennifer can be reached at 210-9600 or jmurphy@ymcawnc.org.
Bryan Messing, will move to a new position at the YMCA of WNC as the Risk Management and Business Solutions Manager. Bryan has worked for the YMCA for the past 8 years as Wellness Coordinator, Wellness Director, Senior Program Director, and most recently as the Executive Director of the Woodfin YMCA. Bryan has recently completed a Masters Certificate in Project Management. He will be a resource in regards to risk management, project management, vendor management, and centralized purchasing for the Association. Bryan can be reached at bmessing@ymcawnc.org. |

Discipline, dedication, desire
|
The Woodfin YMCA is pleased to announce we will be expanding the successful Karate program that began at our Corpening YMCA. This program was brought to us by Randy Robinson, a 4th degree black belt Renshi, and his son Scot Robinson, a 3rd degree black belt Renshi. Both instructors are members of the United Goju-Shorin Karate Association’s High Dan Board. On July 13th, 2014, Randy was inducted into the United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame. It’s exciting to be able to offer a full Karate program with such high caliber instructors at a very affordable rate!
A youth program will now be offered at the Woodfin YMCA. This will begin at the end of September and will focus on age appropriate skills. The program itself will promote discipline, self-confidence, the ability to focus, as well as build skills that will allow individuals to participate in karate as a competitive sport or as an on-going program for physical and mental improvement. Our Youth Program is for children ages 4-13 and will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:15pm in the Main Studio. Registration begins on August 29th. Classes begin on Tuesday, September 23rd. This is an on-going program that will continue monthly. Please see a member engagement representative at the front desk to register. For more information, please contact Group Exercise Manager Christina Romero at cromero@ymcawnc.org.

YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program Expands in Western North Carolina
|
The YMCA of Western North Carolina is proud to announce the expansion of the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program in Buncombe and Henderson Counties. The program launched in McDowell County in 2011 and has served over 240 individuals at-risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Over 90% of participants completed the program boasting over 3,000 pounds lost and considerable reductions in their risk of contracting the disease. Some Diabetes facts: · 1 in 3 American adults are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes and only 11% know they are at-risk.
· It is one of the nation’s costliest diseases. Prevention can save you up to $1,000 per month in health care costs.
The program objective is to prevent, or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes and gives individuals a chance to improve lifestyle behaviors. Participants gain and implement skills such as establishing healthy eating habits and discovering ways to successfully increase physical activity in their lives.
Program Benefits: · 12 months of impactful group support. This is NOT an exercise class. Participants weigh in-weekly and track their progress.
· Real-life session topics with real-life solutions.
· Great tools including program manual, food journals, fat gram counting resources and YMCA family membership.
Informational/interest brochures are located at the Membership Desk and in your Wellness Center, please see a representative or a coach. Classes are filling up now; visit our website to learn more about qualifications and program details at http://www.ymcawnc.org/health-wellness/diabetes-prevention. If you are at-risk, know some who is or are interested in finding out more information about this program, please contact diabetesprevention@ymcawnc.org or call (828) 559-2401
