Georgie Bonds :: HIT IT HARD

Hit it hard. This is what Georgie tells his band before they take the stage. Hit it hard. That’s how he worked as a blacksmith, that’s how he lives his life. Nothing is done in half measures. The 11 tracks on his third album, Hit It Hard, feature his good friends, music and songwriting partners guitarist Neil Taylor and harmonica man Buddy Cleveland and reflect many aspects of Georgie’s personal blues journey. The first track, “Pickin’ Your Bones,” is a tribute to Georgie’s mentor–the great Sonny Rhodes–who guided him as a fledgling blues singer. The final track, “Another Year,” laments the prospect of spending another year in jail. Georgie wrote this song, his first, as a young man during a two year stint in Federal prison. ... Guitar Pete's grave… How do we honor our blues legends?
(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - Last summer I spent a large amount of my free time traveling across the city visiting the grave sites of important local jazz and blues musicians. Sadly, for many of our city's esteemed music greats a small stone grave marker is the only physical evidence of their existence in Indianapolis.

I spent one particular summer afternoon scouring Section 99 of Crown Hill cemetery in a search for the grave of the legendary Indianapolis blues player Guitar Pete Franklin. I must've spent a couple hours zig-zagging through the area reading and rereading every headstone multiple times before finally giving up.

A few weeks ago I renewed my search for Guitar Pete Franklin's grave, but this time I decided to employ a more strategic method. So I called up the Crown Hill switchboard for guidance. ... Find entire story about the search

Cape Fear Blues Festival Returns June 17-19
(WILMINGTON, NC) - What formed in 1987 as an organization to preserve and support the industry of blues music—locally, regionally and nationally—Cape Fear Blues Society (CFBS) has grown and evolved over its three-decade span. This weekend [June 17-19, 2016) they will host their 21st Cape Fear Blues Festival (CFBF), which also continues to change and welcome anywhere from 700 to 1,000 people celebrating the legacy of such soulfully enriching music.
Led by CFBS director Lan Nichols, the festival returns in 2016 with cooler temps. For years it was held at the end of July, but the heat proved too oppressive on the southeastern coast despite the sizzling sounds providing respite. So last year Nichols took note. “Late July has been good to us, but the opportunity to shift to a (potentially) cooler month really motivated the change,” he tells. ...Read entire article about the festival and society

June 18-19, 2016 Radio Show: Curtis Salgado
The great Curtis Salgado was one of the inspirations for the Blues Brothers, and Jake’s whole look took a lot from Curtis Salgado’s whole look. He has been a soul singer for a long time, with Robert Cray, Roomful of Blues, and on his own. He was sidetracked by some major life-threatening illness, but he has come roaring back.

New music from the great Curtis Salgado. Next time, in the Bluesmobile.
