Blues News You Can Use!
Keeping Up...Sometimes Not

Every week I end this column with a request that folks keep me updated on the local scene...favorite bands...best venues...performances and other items of interest. As I worked through putting together the calendar this week, I was once again reminded how easy it is to let errors creep into my effort. Please be reminded if you are a musician/band and have a change of plans, I may not know to update that information if it still appears in one of the local newspapers like the Fayetteville Flyer or Free Weekly unless you let me know. So please accept my heartfelt apologies if this has happened to you/your band. Each week I spend a block of time searching the web pages of the local free press news editions as well as a significant number of venue websites. When I find out later I missed highlighting a special event or otherwise accidentally misdirect our readers to a non-event it concerns me. Unfortunately my schedule does not allow me to search individual musician pages each week so once again I will appeal to musicians and their fans...Please, please send me updates!  My email is listed below. I will look forward to hearing from you.
And as always you can drop me a note and let me know what you want to see in this Newsletter. So, hit me up!

2017 International Songwriting Competition
Local artists, don't overlook this contest!  Last week Liz Lottmann shared:
"the ISC is a really good thing! I have been
in the Top 100 and Top 25 in previous years, and it really ramps up the airplay and
dividends I get each year."
As Ozark Blues Society again this year partners with the International Song Writing Competition, we are excited to be able to bring news of this opportunity to our readers.
The International Songwriting Competition organization shared the following with OBS:
"Now in its 17th year, ISC is one of the largest and most respected songwriting competitions in the world. Prizes include over $150,000 in cash and merchandise, including a $25,000 cash to the Grand Prize winner. Past winners include: Vance Joy; Gotye; Bastille; The Band Perry; Kimbra; Passenger; Kasey Chambers; Passenger; Lindsey Stirling; Kate Miller-Heidke; Gregory Porter; King Charles; Gin Wigmore; Andrew Bird; Tommy Castro; For King & Country; Omar Sosa; and more."

You have to open your mind. I like the ability to express myself in a deep way. It's the closest music to our humanity - it's like a folk music that rises up out of a culture.

[Speaking about Bessie Smith ]
"I was proud to work with her, she was good to everybody; she once told me in Cleveland, Ohio, "You're gonna sing 'Blacksnake Blues' for me real good tonight or I'm gonna break your neck". She was a wonderful woman."
