Dany Franchi :: PROBLEM CHILD
Dany Franchi was born in 1990 in Genoa, Italy, and is widely considered one of the best young blues musicians on the scene today with his soulful vocal tone and incredibly tasteful guitar playing.

In 2014 he recorded I Believe in Ohio with International Blues Challenge winner Sean Carney. Texas blues legend Anson Funderburgh and Don Ritter of Category 5 Amps produced Problem Child. The CD was recorded at the world-famous Wire Recording Studio in Austin, Texas with Grammy award-winning engineer Stuart Sullivan. The album exudes soulfulness and authenticity, and while the respect for tradition is evident, the album also has strong original content, world-class musicianship and a refreshingly unique sound that's bound to make any connoisseur of blues and roots music take notice.

“It was a real pleasure working with Dany,” says Anson Funderburgh. “He’s a passionate singer with a great voice; his approach to songwriting is solid and well-thought-out. He plays guitar with an authentic, old-school style while lending his own unique intensity to the sound and breathes a new life into the music while staying true its origins. ...Find more about this artist and release

Steven Troch :: RHYMES FOR MELLOW MINDS
Belgian Hohner endorser Steven Troch is a Jack-of-all-trades and a master of some, sings like he means it, blows a badass harmonica and writes his own songs. His album, Rhymes for Mellow Minds, is an eclectic collection of original compositions by this harp maestro and his band.This winner of two international harmonica contests draws inspiration from bluesmasters and players like Gary Primich and William Clarke. Rhymes for Mellow Minds covers a remarkable range of musical styles, from swingin’ jazz to moody rumbas, dance-floor-worthy shuffles to rollickin’ country blues stomps, hard-rockin’ shuffles to gospel infused chants.

Featured with Troch, who is known as the “Belgian Blow Torch, is “Little Steve” Van Der Nat, a killer guitar player who nails it on every track; Miss Liesbeth Sprangers who keeps a steady pace on her powerhouse bass; and no-nonsense drummer King Berik, who beats his drums like a madman.

The songs lead you along a poorly-lit blues path, past lost souls, nameless faces and even past a galaxy, very, very far away. They're inhabited by fictional characters like the drunken low-life staring at neon-lit hookers, the old hermit who lives on top of the hill, and the pretty girl whose boyfriend looks like Woody Allen. Rhymes for Mellow Minds is an innovative album revealing that there’s more than one side to the Steven Troch Band.

Dust Devil Dreams: Blues Hammer
By Andrew W. Griffin
(OKLAHOMA CITY, OK) – The ghost of Delta bluesman Robert Johnson has been haunting my dreams these past few weeks.

Seriously. This crossroads business has really struck a chord, no pun intended.
In the film Crossroads, which I referenced in a recent Dust Devil Dreams post “Old situations need old medicines,” which highlighted Robert Johnson’s alleged midnight meeting at the crossroads with the Devil, where he would tune the bluesman’s guitar and hand it back to him, assuring the mortal has amazing guitar-playing abilities.

In the film, Ralph Macchio’s guitar-playing genius Eugene “Lightning” Martone springs old bluesman Willie Brown (an old pal of Robert Johnson, and a guy who also made a deal with the Devil) -played by Joe Seneca - from his incarcerated state in a New York nursing home. They flee to Mississippi where Willie promises Eugene they will find Robert Johnson's long-lost 30th song (which does not actually exist). This is enough for Eugene to help Willie.

Blue Wing Blues Festival Sept 1-3
(LAKEPORT, CA) - The annual Blue Wing Blues Festival, will be held out in the shaded garden of the Tallman Hotel’s Blue Wing Saloon & Cafe (9520 Main St. Upper Lake, California) between the hotel and restaurant. The theme of the August weekend is authentic “Bayou Blues” all three nights; with stomping good-time danceable blues rearing its head on Labor Day, September 3. Each evening’s show goes from 6-9pm and is priced separately.

Opening night, Sept 1, features the great local band “Twice as Good” opening for Baton Rouge favorite, Kenny Neal and His Family Band. On Sunday, September 2, Kenny Neal headlines again, with Pat Gleeson serving as the opening act. On Monday, September 3 (Labor Day), Rick Estrin and the Nightcats make a return providing the sounds for a night of old fashioned danceable blues with Rick on vocals and blues harp and the incomparable Kid Andersen on guitar.

The festival was rescheduled form its regular August dates because of the fires in the Lake County area. The $50 + tax admission price includes an opening and headliner band plus a delicious barbeque dinner.

Band times are staggered slightly to encourage attendees to see all bands at each of the four venues and the $5 donation is a fundraiser for the Reno Blues Society, a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization dedicated to promoting blues music and culture in the area. Some of the proceeds will benefit the RBS’ music scholarship program. Costume theme for those who want to dress up is Blues Brothers’ garb (think dark glasses and a blues hat or fedora with a dark suit). ...Find more info about the Pub Crawl
