Ted Hefko and The Thousandaires :: GAS STATION GURU
Gas Station Guru is the fourth album from roots and rhythm ensemble Ted Hefko and The Thousandaires and was recorded in his hometown of New Orleans. The record feature Mem Shannon who lends his distinctive syle to “Two Vices.” Pianists Sherman Bernard adds his authentic New Orleans feel to “Ten Dollar Hat” and “The Next Train” features contributions from members of theCajun band T’Canaille.

Ted Hefko and The Thousandaires stir up an intoxicating brew of the profound and the profane. Of virtue and vice and most importantly the volatile in-between. Ted’s songs explore hope and hustlers, saints and strays, drifters and the down-and-out. The Thousandaires – with Hefko on vocals, guitar and tenor sax – bring these stories to life with the spontaneity of jazz, the rough-hewn, bare-bones tone of the backwoods folk songs and the raucous vibrancy of classic Louisiana R&B. ...Find more about this artist and release

New Book Bitten By The Blues, The Alligator Records Story Set For Oct 30 Release
Bitten by the Blues, The Alligator Records Story, the new book co-authored by Alligator Records president and founder Bruce Iglauer and Patrick A. Roberts, will be released on Tuesday, October 30 by The University of Chicago Press. The book is a memoir of a life immersed in the blues -- and the business of running an independent blues label. Bitten By The Blues takes readers behind the scenes, offering larger than life stories of musicians, recording sessions, and what it's like to work with the legends of the genre.

From first hearing Hound Dog Taylor at Florence's Lounge on Chicago's South Side to building Alligator Records one release at a time to running the biggest blues label in the world, Iglauer and Roberts take readers on a 50-year journey through the blues from local Chicago bars to festival stages across the globe.

According to Iglauer, "We wanted to paint vivid pictures of the charismatic blues immortals that I knew so well... Read more about this cool book
Students get the blues for UL School of Music
(LAYFAYETTE, LA) - Marty Christian sings the blues with a smile these days. Rambling Blues, Christian’s fifth CD, continues a music career that’s won him fans in France and across the United States.

Christian is also enjoying a new day gig as an instructor in the Traditional Music Program at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He’s happy to share American music that laid the foundation for rock, soul, country and more.

“It’s so inspiring to see these musicians get deep into the older acoustic blues songs and the musicians who wrote them,” said Christian, a French Immersion teacher. “The students all have great ears and are already at a high level of playing as musicians.

“By studying these songs and practicing with them in class, I hope to help them pick up on the feel and rhythms behind these songs and just open their vocabulary to so much that is not being done enough in music today by learning the roots of traditional blues and getting as close as they can to the feel and technique of the masters like Robert Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy and Bessie Smith.” ...Find more about this class and the Fundraiser this Saturday
