Mark Wenner :: MARK WENNER’S BLUES WARRIORS
Mark Wenner’s Blues Warriors is the latest CD from Washington D.C. based blues harmonica master Mark Wenner, the founder/leader at legendary blues and roots band, The Nighthawks, has once again put together an exciting new side project with some of the D.C. area’s finest traditional blues musicians. This is the real deal played by cats that know the language.

The band features guitarist/vocalist Clarence “the bluesmen” Turner who is impressive with his deep roots. The other guitarist is the young gun Zach Sweeney. Mark met a very young Zach when his parents would bring him to blues jams. He recently returned from some serious road work with the great honky tonk man Wayne “the train” Hancock. Needing an upright bass to keep early styles sounding like they should, Mark called on D.C.’s world-class upright player Steve Wolf. Wolf brings his jazz experience in his many years playing damn near everything with the great Danny Gatton. Mark also recruited regular Hawks drummer Mark Stutso to form a swinging, shuffling rhythm section. His great, soulful vocals add even more texture.  ...Find more about this artist and release

Crystal Shawanda :: VOODOO WOMAN
A powerful, new female blues voice that evokes the spirit and grit of Janis Joplin and the contemporary delivery of Beth Hart, belongs to an indigenous North American named Crystal Shawanda. Her new album, Voodoo Woman, captures the intensity an incredible range of this performer who story is finally being told.

Crystal grew up on the Wikwemikong reserve on an island in Ontario, Canada. Her parents taught her to sing and play guitar and encouraged her to play country songs, but it was her oldest brother who introduced her to the blues.

She was signed as a country artist to RCA Records in 2007. Her country debut album produced a Top 20 hit on country radio, sold over 50,000 copies in the US, and went top 20 on Billboard’s country albums chart, but left Crystal feeling like a fish out of water. While on the road promoting the album, visiting radio stations, she wrote the “Whole World’s Got The Blues,” and told RCA Nashville she wanted to make blues album. She formed her own label, New Sun Records, and begin making that music that was her calling. The blues. ...Find more about this artist and release

Blues in his blood: Shawn Holt to play fundraiser Oct 7

Griffin Kelly
Adirondack Daily Enterprise
(SARANAC LAKE, NY) — Shawn Holt was born into the blues. His father Morris, better known as Magic Slim, was a renowned guitarist and singer with an authentic Chicago style. Magic used to take Shawn on tour with him when he was just a little boy.

“I grew up around a lot of music, especially a lot of blues musicians,” Holt said. “My father would take me on the road, and I guess it just kind of stuck with me. I remember vans and hotels and huge festivals. I guess it was in my blood.”

Shawn Holt and the Teardrops will perform at the Waterhole (48 Main St., Saranac Lake, New York) on Sunday at 7 p.m. The show is hosted by and is a benefit concert for the local arts center, BluSeed Studios.

The Teardrops were formerly led by Magic. Holt started playing guitar in the group when he was a teenager. Magic died in 2013 because of heart, lung and kidney problems. Holt had to step up and lead the band without his dad there.

“I had to record a CD months after my father died,” he said. “We were all crying in the studio, but we put pure emotion into that record, and it won two awards. My father is my biggest influence and inspiration — him and life itself.” ...Read more about Shawn Holt and the fundraiser

Tampa Bay News
(SAN FRANCISCO, CA) — I found myself trekking through the hustle and bustle of this city's famous Nob Hill neighborhood with a group of friends last week, and little reminded me of home.

Born and raised in Tallahassee, the five of us — the fellas forever — traversed the hills and strolled with eyes wide open as an array of folks purposely walked with that gritty look you can only find in a busy downtown.

Not far from Union Square, around the corner from the iconic Starlight Room, down the way from the Fairmont Hotel once featured in the television series Hotel (yes, I had a crush on Shari Belafonte), we stepped into a place befitting the big city feel of San Francisco.

Biscuits and Blues, nestled between a Jack In The Box and a Mongolian eatery and sporting a checkerboard exterior, welcomed us with downtown panache. Down the stairs and into the bowels of a place that just oozed cool, we dined on New Orleans-style cuisine and prepared for the night's show.
When the barefoot guitarist took the stage with his three bandmates, I could ask myself only one question…  ...Read entire take on music appreciation
