Sweet Impermanence  *  Mary Yoga ENews
Issue #153  *  September 2018
Aparigraha ~ The Second Dart
Wow, September was a whirlwind! I led two teacher trainings ~ Restorative and Yoga Nidra ~ and a Catskills retreat. The constantly evolving nature of Life felt very present!

During the Nidra training, my son emailed me his Classical Buddhism essay on the changeable, impermanent nature of life.

I shared quotes with my trainees, as we were exploring how Yoga Nidra meditation helps release attachment and therefore suffering.

Attachment as the source of human suffering is described by the Buddha in his example of "the dart of painful feeling":

"Suppose they were to strike a man with a dart, but they would not strike him immediately afterward with a second dart, so that he would feel a feeling caused by one dart only. So too, when the instructed noble disciple experiences a painful feeling, he feels one feeling - a bodily one, and not a mental one." (Bodhi, 31)

"Meaning that the disciple only feels the physical pain of the dart and not a second dart of the mental pain. Because the world is impermanent physical pain is temporary. Therefore if we experience physical pain neither resisting or attaching ourselfs to the feeling we will avoid psychological pain that comes with feeling physical pain in an attached way." ~ Raphael

So the option, if we choose to accept it ~ and we can extrapolate this beyond physical to circumstantial pain, as well, is ~

Meet life's darts with non-attachment, so that we can feel just the first dart, and not add a second ~ or seventieth ~ through attachment.

Among the many "second darts" we attach are: shame, blame, self-judgment, judgment of others, worry, anxiety, fear ... and instant replays of regret, those multiple-repeat darts. We can drop these.

Easier said than done! To be sure, Yoga does help us to release attachment. Yoga's tools of breath, sweat, stretch, meditation all help us let go. "Aparigraha" or "non-grasping," is the 9th of 10 precepts in the 1st limb of Yoga's 8 limbs of Yoga, right before "Isvara Pranidana," surrender to the Higher Power. Jesus also urged us to trust in God, releasing our own "second darts": "Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his lifespan?" (Matthew 6:31)

Aparigraha is grounded in Isvara Pranidana, letting go is easier, resting upon the supportive ground of the Divine.

And then we may begin to see life as more precious, valuable, precisely because all is changeable and temporary.

We may see beauty as more breath-taking, precisely because it is so fleeting. At least, this beauty. Because, trustingly, there will be a next, and a next. And a next.

Teacher Trainings

Update
: My 100-Hour Restorative Teacher Trainings are moving to Winter instead of Summer, in 2019.

So, the dates are the last weekends in January, February, March, and April.

And, the Yoga Nidra Teacher Training will take place on a weekend in late June, 2019. Watch for them on Pure's TT page, and on my website, www.maryaranas.com!
Generosity

An online article on relationships made an observation that the "Most Essential Love Ingredient" in a relationship (or anywhere) was ... drum roll ...

Guess what? Perhaps unsurprisingly ... Generosity is the Most Essential Love Ingredient in a Relationship.

Here's a spin that won't surprise you: try that same ingredient in your relationship to yourself!
reSOULutions 2019
reSOULutions #5: Our Elements is the name of our January 5-12 Xinalani, Mexico Yoga beach escape!

We say escape because it is the dreary dead of winter in New York, post-New Year, post holiday, and pre-Valentine. Who doesn't need to get away!

I say beach because we are on the gentle shores of Xinanali ~ see pics and videos! ~ where we may surf, windsurf, snorkel, dive, dolphin watch, to our hearts' content, and live in breezy canopied tree-house like lodges facing the gentle waves and sand.

I say Yoga because it is like a Yoga University; we have 3 senior teachers, 3 junior teachers and a supporting Teacher Tribe with more expertise than a yoga festival, combined.

There is daily meditation and vigorous vinyasa, yes, but also gentle flow, inversion workshops, Thai Massage, AcroYoga, Restorative, journaling, Ayurveda, & more.

There are multiple yoga styles, free time, luscious cuisine, and the most diverse, inclusive Tribe family you can imagine, because that is our vision: Juan, Esco, and I ....

And our SOUL Squad 2019.
Come join us. $500 deposit before Oct 15 secures an Early Bird spot. Various price tier options.
