Gina Sicilia :: HEARD THE LIE
Heard The Lie, Gina Sicilia’s eighth album in 10 years, is so loaded with gems that it’s hard to believe that the material was written in a single month. But the prolific young songwriter said the 10 originals on the album are actually her favorites out of more than 20 songs she wrote—all in the month of December 2017. The eclectic and inspired album on Blue Élan Records, includes an uplifting ballad cowritten and performed with Grammy-nominated labelmate Janiva Magness and a smoky cover of Bad Company’s “Ready for Love.”

The album was the culmination of a long tour and then two months of listening to music nearly around the clock. “Back in September [2017] I got back from nine weeks on the road, took a break, and listened to music 24-7,” Sicilia says. “By the time December came I had taken enough time listening to music, and in December I had written 20-25 songs.”

Wentus Blues Band :: THROWBACK
Most people associate the blues with Louisiana's bayous and Mississippi's cotton fields. But lovers of "the devil´s music" might be surprised to learn that there's also a thriving scene in Scandinavia. At the heart of this Nordic blues explosion are the Wentus Blues Band, who hail from Kokkola, in central Finland. Established in 1986, the band plays 150 gigs annually and has acquired a reputation as the hardest working blues outfit in Scandinavia.

Over the years, the five members of Wentus Blues Band have taken pleasure in performing with many of the world’s great blues artists. Through numerous tours in Europe supporting and backing these blues giants, and through the band’s solo tours, Wentus Blues Band has developed into a blues university of its own and has become a treasured Scandinavian musical institution.

Throwback is the diary of those tours: songs the band has enjoyed playing amidst the laughter, sweat and tears they've experienced during countless miles on the road. On the album, the group wanted to honor some of their heroes and mentors (ranging from Canned Heat to Eddie Kirkland to Louisiana Red)

Documentary on Bluesman Frank Bey Final Push for Kickstarter Funding Oct 25
By James Roberts/Glide Magazine
As we move on into the 21st century, our connection to the blues is getting more and more tenuous. Blues, of course, will never die—as long as there’s a smoky club, barbecue, and the need to express the joys and pains of being alive, there will be the blues—but every passing year removes us from the roots of blues a little bit more, and the tissue that connects us to the original purveyors of this uniquely American genre gets more and more loose.

We, simply, don’t have many old school bluesmen left standing. History is lost a little more with every year, and so it’s important that we document what we have to remind us of what we were as we continue moving forward into a new generation of blues. A new documentary, currently being crowdfunded on Kickstarter, is looking to document the life and struggles of legendary bluesman Frank Bey.

Frank Bey: Ask Me How I Feel, whose crowdfunding campaign runs through October 25, hopes to shed light on the life and career of Bey, whose rise in the 70s was derailed thanks to an infamous deal with James Brown gone wrong.

Florida's Forgotten Music Festival Postponed
(MEXICO BEACH, FL) - The Forgotten Coast has been devastated by Hurricane Michael. Our hearts and prayers go out to the citizens and residents of Mexico Beach, Florida and surrounding areas and points beyond, as this will not take weeks or months, but years to recover from.

Mexico Beach no longer has the infrastructure to support the Forgotten Music Festival. We are working very hard to relocate this event as a fundraiser for our community. We are exploring all options to save the date for the Forgotten Music Festival.

Rest assured, the Forgotten Music Festival will be on the Forgotten Coast in 2019. We will rebuild this community to be stronger and better than ever.
Please contact us via email should you prefer changing your plans.

Thanks to Sears, the musicians who gave America the blues had an ax to grind
By Corky Siemaszko/NBC News
Sears is currently singing the bankruptcy blues — but it's a little-known fact that the retail giant also helped nurture the musical genre spawned in the Deep South.

Because that quintessentially American form of music was created and disseminated by Delta bluesmen wielding steel-string guitars purchased from the Sears catalog — which leveled the shopping playing field for blacks in the Jim Crow era, according to music experts.

"There was an amalgamation of a number of things that led to the development of the blues and the acoustic guitars being bought through the Sears catalog was certainly one of them," said Michael Roberts, who teaches a class on the history of the blues at DePaul University in Chicago. "It was inexpensive enough that the blues artists were able to save up the money they made as sharecroppers to make that purchase."
Michael Stryker, director of the jazz studies program at the University of Illinois at Chicago, said the catalog was likely a mecca for musicians in the Mississippi Delta. ...Read entire story here
Bluesman Chris Thomas King gives blues history lesson in LA
By Greg Fischer Editor-in-chief
(DONALDSONVILLE, LA) - The River Road African American Museum in co-sponsorship with the City of Donaldsonville hosted blues artist and historian Chris Thomas King on October 7. The event was held from 5:30 p.m. to sunset at the Rosenwald School building, located at 511 Williams Street. However, the event ran a little later than expected because the audience was interested in what King has to say about the history of Blues music.

Namely, King says that it was born in Louisiana, contrary to the perhaps more popular notion that blues music comes primarily out of Mississippi.

“The word ‘jazz’ has no meaning,” King said. “The word ‘blues’ is very powerful.”
King pointed to American bandleader King Oliver, born in Aben, LA. in 1881.
“When King Oliver’s Orchestra called their song ‘Dippermouth Blues,’ he was saying something. He wasn’t talking about Jazz,” King said.

King also pointed out that the origin of the Blues genre comes from the French expletive “Sacrebleu,” which translates into “damn it.”
