Photo Moments with the 16th Annual BFG Magazine
I had the pleasure of attending elder statesman, bluesman Tomcat Courtney's 90th birthday celebration in San Diego, CA.
A native of Texas, Tomcat's father owned a juke joint. As a young boy he saw Robert Johnson, Tampa Red, Lightnin’ Hopkins and Sonny Boy Williamson and more perform, but says Washboard Sam and Charley Lewis (who had a style similar to Lightnin') had the biggest influences on him as a player.
Tomcat was also inspired after seeing Bojangles (Bill Robinson) dance in Waco and as a teen he became a dancer in a Minstral show before striking out as a guitarist and vocalist.
He has some amazing stories you can imagine! You can read a recent detailed interview with Tomcat in Blues Lovers United of San Diego's newsletter here.

Taumei “Big John” Akapo is a presence in Hawaii, not just in his physical stature, but in the commanding nature of his soulful blues voice and ringing guitar playing that have enthralled residents and visitors to the Islands for decades. With the release of his debut CD, Paradise Blues, from Mensch House Records, listeners from around the globe will get to experience what all the excitement is about.

Paradise Blues showcases John Akapo at his very best, with 10 songs that mix both his love of Delta blues and his American Samoan DNA for a blend unlike any other performer in contemporary blues/roots music. Produced by Akapo, the 10 tracks on his new disc include seven originals, as well as his own unique take on songs from some of his mentors, such as Robert Johnson’s “Ramblin’ on My Mind”, Muddy Waters’ “I Can’t Be Satisfied,” and Tommy Johnson’s “Big Road Blues.” ...Find more about this artist and release

Country Blues & Dance House Party Jan 25
(READING, PA) - Throughout Piedmont and Appalachians, there have existed for centuries, shared musical traditions that were equally popular among rural blacks and whites.

The Reading Area Community College's Miller Center for the Arts presents “Country Blues and Dance” Friday, Jan. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Miller Center for the Arts (4 N. Second St., Reading, Pennsylvania).

This program explores the roots and connections of these regional rural music and dance traditions as expressed in the artistry of contemporary masters of tradition. The program will feature harmonica wizard and 2017 National Heritage Fellow Phil Wiggins and his blues house party ensemble featuring the dancing of internationally touring artist Junious Brickhouse, and North Carolina songsters extraordinaire, the Harris Brothers in a celebration of Piedmont and Appalachian music and urban dance.

“…the audience will see the juxtaposition of African-American and white musical traditions — and, most unusually, their connections to the urban dance traditions leading up to present day hip-hop,” Susan L. Pena/Reading Eagle Correspondent ...Find ticket details and links

Things that we go through for nothing in the world
A writer’s view on how blues might help to open eyes to help live with less prejudice, malice or disregard for others

By David Mungoshi
Herald Zimbabwe
“To think of the things that you go through for nothing in the world” is a troubling, intense and self-searching line. It portrays the experiences of many black people in the United States of America, including those of the Louisville Lip, Cassius Clay, later known as Muhammad Ali, a champion boxer.
Champion Jack Dupree is one of my favourite blues artistes. As they would say in musical parlance: he plays a mean piano. Put another way, Champion Jack is a maestro, simple and true. The peals of his piano in almost any key strike you to the soul.

Sometime in the year 1975 Champion Jack went on a European tour and spent some time in Copenhagen where he demonstrated expertly with nothing, but his grand piano, stomping feet and voice that he was without doubt one of the last grand masters of blues music — a very hard to resist, vintage blues singer. ...Read entire piece here
Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World
The Guardian
In an eye-opening new documentary, Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World, hidden Native American figures are finally given credit for influencing a vast amount of popular music.

For a song with no lyrics, “Rumble” managed to say a lot about sex, swagger and the allure of teenage rebellion. Released in 1958 by Native American guitarist Link Wray, the track – all dirty chord progressions and blistering guitar – was an omen of the impending 60s rock revolution… “Rumble’s narrative goes far deeper than teenage impulses, tracing a path from rock ‘n’ roll to jazz to the blues to the music of pre-colonial America, before European immigrants and Federal government began their systematic decimation of Native people and the vibrant musical traditions they carried. Through exhaustive research backed by the Smithsonian, Rumble makes a case that the blues, the oldest form of American popular music, was influenced by even more ancient Native styles of playing and singing.

In particular the film points to Charley Patton – “the father of the Delta blues” who’s believed to have Choctaw ancestry – as a key artist who melded traditional tribal rhythms with the then burgeoning blues.
