Celso Salim Band :: MAMA’S HOMETOWN
Based in Southern California since 2014, Brazilian guitarist Celso Salim and his band are announcing the release of their new album, Mama’s Hometown. Produced by Mike Hightower and Salim himself, this is the first album recorded in the U.S. with the band’s new formation.Full of soulful and energetic performances, the band presents a contemporary blues sound rooted in the past. Their music takes on many styles, mixing deep blues with hints of soul, country, jazz and rock. 

The band received two awards in the 2019 International Blues Challenge: Band 3rd Place and the Lee Oskar Harmonica Award.
 
Mama’s Hometown has 9 tracks, including 8 originals and a version of a traditional gospel song, “In My Time of Dying." The album features Brazilian singer Rafael Cury on lead vocals. Mike Hightower: bass/harmony vocals, Lynn Coulter: drums/harmony vocals, Dave Fraser: piano/keyboards and Celso Salim: guitars/dobro/lead vocals. Additional special guests, Darryl Carriere: harmonica, Mo Beeks: Hammond B3 and Minque Taylor: harmony vocals.
 
The album’s title track recently won the 2018 Independent Music Awards – Vox Pop in the R&B/Soul Song category and the track "Locked Out In Misery" is a finalist in the Blues Song category at the 2018 International Songwriting Competition.

2019 Fat Tuesday Mardi Gras Block Party, Blues Concert & Masquerade Ball 
(SAN FRANCISCO, CA) – The Village Project presents the 2019 Fat Tuesday Mardi Gras Block Party & Blues Concert, Tuesday, March 5, at the Fillmore Center Plaza (1475 Fillmore St. San Francisco, CA). This year’s celebration again opens with a free community blues concert featuring blues songstress, Margie Turner, along with Alabama Mike and Bernard Anderson.

The New Orleans style festival will bring San Francisco’s historic Fillmore Music District to life with Zydeco and blues, a colorful family friendly carnival atmosphere, and a second line parade led by Sumba Funk, the St. Gabriel’s Brass Band and the Gumbo Band. New Orleans’ own, Chief Takawaka will serve as Grand Marshall and will MC the event. There will be face painting, street artists and performers. The free blues concert starts at 5PM and ends at 7:30PM and followed by the second line New Orleans style parade down the Fillmore Corridor. Cost is free for the this concert and festivities, but you need to RSVP.

The annual Masquerade Ball follows at 8pm at the Fillmore Jazz Heritage Center and tickets for that event can be purchased here. Guests will enjoy New Orleans cuisine, Mardi Gras drink specials and more blues and Zydeco music, with Tia Carroll and the infamous Fillmore Slim.

March 16 BBQ & Blues Cook-Off to Raise Funds for Schools
(FOLEY, AL) - The South Baldwin Chamber Foundation is cooking up a whole lot of fun while raising funds supporting Foley area schools during the Annual BBQ & Blues Cook-Off on Saturday, March 16 in Heritage Park, located at the intersection of Hwy 59 & 98 in Downtown Foley, Alabama. Festival-goers will enjoy award-winning barbeque, popular blues bands, craft and retail vendors, children’s activities and silent auction bidding.

As a part of the Alabama BBQ Trail, cook team competition rules follow guidelines of the Alabama Barbeque Association. Categories are: chicken, ribs, Boston butts, sauce and anything “butt” which includes exotic items, seafood and desserts. The competition is open to everyone with the $100 entry fee covering all competition categories and up to six team members. Deadline for registration is March 1.
Admission is $10 and includes BBQ samples from contestants. The South Baldwin Chamber Foundation will also be selling barbeque sandwiches from LA Barbeque and pre-cooked Boston Butts. Beer, wine, soft drinks and water will also be for sale, along with the official event T-shirts. All proceeds benefit the South Baldwin Chamber Foundation to support local schools through programs and partnerships that enrich education, develop leadership and better the community. Connecticut Blues Society Annual Blues Blizzard Mar 2nd
(WEST HARTFORD, CT) – Five of the top blues bands in Connecticut are all on one bill March 2 at the Connecticut Blues Society’s annual “Blues Blizzard” dance party and fundraiser. The Blues Blizzard will take place at the Hannon-Hatch VFW (83 South St., West Hartford). Music begins at 6PM, with doors opening at 5PM. Admission is a suggested donation of $10. Inexpensive food and drink will be available.

Connecticut Blues Society president Ed Stack has described the Blues Blizzard as “the best party in the state!” The bands performing this year include Dave Robbins & The Incredible Amplifires, the Cole Morson Band, Ryan Hartt & The Blue Hearts, The Mike Crandall Band and Jake Kulak & The LowDown.

The Blues Blizzard, which has taken place for at least 24 years, is a benefit to raise funds for Connecticut Blues Society events, including the annual Band and Solo/Duo Blues Challenges that the organization sponsors each year.
