Shiloh: An Historic African American Community
The Ramsey Center at MHU
Monday April 15, 3:30-4:30 pm

Anita White-Carter and Bobbette Kilgore Mays will be here to talk about the Shiloh Community, which was originally established circa 1865-1870 and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited African American communities in the Asheville area. This talk will explore the community’s origins on a small parcel of land in the area of present-day Biltmore Estate and its relocation in 1889 to the current location in South Asheville.
The talk will also focus on Shiloh’s relationship to the nearby African American neighborhoods of Rock Hill and Petersburg and the institutional and cultural elements that helped Shiloh grow from a sparsely populated rural area to the vibrant community that it is.

Things That Feel Like Rocks
"Emphasizing the use of local, non-industrial materials to create a body of work—the materials, experiences surrounding them, and the people of those communities are a valuable source of influence. Interpreting the visual language of particular location helps create personally significant work that comes from somewhere more profound than just the imagination.
